THE ROYAL, MILITARY AND MONASTIC ORDER OF MERIT
OF THE WINGED ARM OF THE GLORIOUS ARCHANGEL SAINT MICHAEL
The Royal Brotherhood of Saint Michael, Archdiocese for Military Services (USA), having suspended proposals of members for the Royal Order of Saint Michael of the Wing, hereby announces the institution of the Royal, Military and Monastic Order of Merit of the Winged Arm of the Glorious Archangel Saint Michael.
This new Awards System recognized by the I.C.O.C. (International Commission of Orders of Chivalry) to be bestowed as of May 8th 2024, will be conferred under the High Patronage of the Portuguese Royal House with H.R.H. Dom Duarte Pio, Duke of Bragança as Grandmaster exclusively by proposal of both the Royal Brotherhood of Saint Michael, Archdiocese for Military Services (USA) and the Korolivsʹkyy Orden Svyatoho Arkhanhela Mykhayila - Ukrayina (Autonomous Ukraine Military and Monastic Commandry).
This Royal Military and Monastic Order will likewise be bestowed by the Royal Brotherhood of the Monastery of Santa Maria de Oseira, Spain (Formerly of the Archdiocese of Santiago de Compostela).
Those members of the Order Saint Michael of the Wing / Order of the Archangel Saint Michael or of the other Dynastic Royal Orders wishing to receive the Royal, Military and Monastic Order of Merit of the Winged Arm of the Glorious Archangel Saint Michael through the AMS / Ukraine or Monastic Royal Brotherhoods, may contact the Secretariat for more information and to obtain an application form.
CLARIFICATION: Please note that those members of the Order of Saint Michael of the Wing / Order of the Archangel Saint Michael who were previously invested with this insignia or similar ARE NOT members of this new Royal, Military and Monastic Order of Merit but may continue to use the similar insignia that is in fact one of various historic designs issued by the Portuguese Dynastic Royal Order between 1171 - 2023.
Given this new design is now exclusive to the aforementioned Royal, Military and Monastic Order of Merit of the Winged Arm of the Glorious Archangel Saint Michael exclusively granted by proposal of the Military Archdiocese and Monastic Communities referred above, all members of the same Royal Brotherhoods will be required to substitute their cape patches for this new symbol.
Members invested in the Order of Saint Michael of the Wing before September 29th, 2023 must continue to wear the insignia previously used by the Order but not the cape patch.
The use of the Crown on the Insignia will continue to authorized only for Ecclesiastical Patrons (Bishops), Judges and Members of the Chancellery.

R.I.P. John Michael Thoma
Dear Family and Friends,
John and Eve ‘s medical evacuate flight arrived January 19 Thursday night at midnight at the our house. The whole medical flight crew including the pilot doctor and the nurses drove him in the ambulance with Eve and got him set up in our home in his wheelchair and gave him lots of army salutes and well wishes before their departure.
Then Dawn our daughter who is an ICU nurse, Eve our daughter who has been his constant primary care advocate and medical champion during his entire illness and hospitalization, our older grandson Austin and younger grandson Mitchell lifted him into his bed and we all talked and visited with John until he fell asleep and stayed with him throughout the night.
Friday morning, the nuclear family was joined by John’s sister Ann, my brother Rivet and his wife Alysia, our dear friends Ben and Debbie Carr and we spent all of Friday enjoying John’s company. John was able to talk with us and respond briefly to the conversation around us as we shared photographs, memories and stories of John and us together.
John was in much pain throughout this time but after all but the nuclear family had retired, he said he was happy and had enjoyed everything so very much. That night was a hard and painful night for him but Dawn + Eve, Austin + Mitchell were right by his side to move him and to take care of his every need.
Saturday, John told us he could feel that his strength was really ebbing. Father Brian from Our Lady of the Angels Church that John attends here in Burlingame came and gave John the Sacrament of the Last Rites for the Dying. We had all gathered around him and prayed the Rosary. And Father Brian (87 years old) told stories and then again we prayed for John.
After Father Brian left, the family and friends once again surrounded John and we talked to him and each other reminiscing about shared experiences and family stories. John rallied twice and asked to be put in his wheelchair and to sit in our big family room/kitchen where we all cooked and ate together around the table.
During this time many friends from around the world called and spoke to John by phone. He nodded to their voices and smiled but was not able to speak audibly with them. I held the speaker phone to his ear and we could all see that he recognized his friends and understood their words.
After the evening meal and when most had settled down for the night, the nuclear family once again stayed in John’s room for the night to keep him company. He was talking and mumbling all night. My daughter Dawn wrote down some things he said that we all clearly understand though there was much that we couldn’t.
Once, he said “ Yeah, I’ll be ok tucked away in a little corner, I’ll be ok.”
The he said. “ I see the light people!”
And “I see lots of rainbows!”
The last thing he said, “The door is open. It’s an invitation to come in.”
He breathed his last breath Sunday morning at 8:39.
We and he wanted his health to return and a longer life for John. He told me that until the very last day at the hospital he had hope. But when his doctor told John that he was being released to palliative care then he said he realized that ,
“This is the end . It’s all over. I’m not angry.
I accepted it. I’m in acceptance. I’m ok.”
After John’s death, our family and friends stayed to comfort us and will be here a few more days before returning to their homes in Texas.
There will not be a funeral. At a later future time several months from now, there will be a Celebration of Life service. I will reach out to you in an email to give you details.
I want to thank all of you on behalf of John and our family for your love and concern for him and us and the support and love you have expressed to him and us since October 2019.
We thank you for being there for him and for us. Love is the greatest power and peacemaker. Love comforts our souls and heals our wounded hearts. There is no treasure more valuable than love.
Life is for growth, learning and experiences but more than anything - life is for growing love, learning love and experiencing love. It is the most beautiful and and powerful action.
John loved his life and lived his life as love. And we love him dearly and will always.
I sign off on this letter with a grateful heart for having been married to John for 55 years,
Jennell Thoma
I am very sadden to hear this and I was able to talk to John yesterday and hope to see him one last time. -Steve Stephen-Michael Besinaiz
