We'd like to give a big congratulations to Waukegan High School Junior Victor Hinojosa, who has again been selected to serve on the Illinois State Board of Education Student Advisory Council (SAC) for the 2023-2024 school year. This is Victor’s second year on the advisory council.
Victor, who also serves as the District 60’s Student Board Member, is one of just 25 students statewide chosen for the Student Advisory Council. According to ISBE, Council members are young leaders from across the state who have demonstrated the ability to advocate for educational equity on behalf of all Illinois public school students.
Victor is looking forward to continuing his work on the Council, and building upon the group’s efforts to create a more fair and equitable Illinois.
Dear Oppidan Spirits Community,
It is with mixed emotions that we share some news about the future of our beloved space. After much consideration, we have decided not to renew our lease. We've had an incredible journey together, and we are grateful for the memories, laughter, and connections we've made over the years.
Operating two businesses with divergent visions in the same location has proven to have significant challenges, leading to frustrations for both businesses. Following our final night of service, we will commence removing our all of our belongings. The space will then exclusively belong to Nightshade and Dark's, allowing them to fully embody the image they've always envisioned.
Fear not though; our wholesale business will still persist! You will be able to continue enjoying our fantastic products at your favorite local liquor store and select bars and restaurants. We'll also be hosting popup events in the coming year, so keep an eye out for exciting announcements.
We want to express our deepest gratitude for your support these last years. To celebrate the memories we've created together, we invite you to join us for our last week of regular operations. We will be closed on Thursday for Thanksgiving, but open during regular hours on Wednesday, from 6:00-11:00 on Friday, and our final farewell evening on Saturday the 25th from 4:00pm-1200am. Let's make these final moments unforgettable.
Thank you for being part of the Oppidan Spirits family. We're excited for what the future holds and look forward to sharing our journey with you in new and exciting ways.
Cheers to the memories and the adventures that lie ahead!
The Office of City Clerk Janet E. Kilkelly

What's even more remarkable is that Jerry is now majoring in music education with a passionate goal of becoming a music teacher. His commitment to inspiring others echoes the very mission we champion at Bravo Waukegan. Día de los Mu***os (Day of the Dead) is traditionally observed on November 1st and 2nd. Originating in Mexico and evolving over 3,000 years, it is celebrated throughout Latin America, as well as parts of Asia including the Philippines, and with migration, around the world. The day is set aside to honor and remember ancestors, family, and community members who have gone into the spirit world by creating ofrendas (altars) and visiting graves when possible. Explained by Michelle Téllez, associate professor of Mexican American Studies at The University of Arizona: "Many argue that if you remember them, they never cease to exist. The altars can be made in so many ways, with a photo of the deceased, their favorite foods, flowers. Sometimes with a representation of the four elements, a candle or copal for fire, a cup of water, and then the wind and earth might be represented by papel picado. In those two days, you spend time with memories. It's a way to normalize this cycle of life that we live.”
Happy Halloween, Waukegan!
