Itโ€™s time to register for the 2024 Kansas Gender & Sexuality Conference.

The 2024 conference will be held Friday, October 18th at Wichita State University in the Rhatigan Student Center.

Registration is now open and will be available until 11:59 pm on October 6th.

We request that all attendees pre-register to help us with the conference planning process. However, there will be an opportunity for onsite registration for those who miss the deadline.

To register, go to: https://wichitastate.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_cBYdY8zDqf7eRa6

About this year's keynote:
While we are still putting together the agenda and sessions (the CFP closes Wednesday), we are excited to share that our keynote speaker will be Dr. Meg Paceley (they/them) whose talk is titled, "Health, Activism, Community, and Resistance in an Era of Anti-LGBTQ+ Policy, Legislation, and Rhetoric."

Dr. Paceley is a social worker and scholar engaged in research that examines factors in the social environment (e.g. families, communities) and broader systems (e.g. policies, societal rhetoric) and their relationship to q***r and trans (QT) youthโ€™s mental and physical health. They aim to identify and evaluate macro strategies (e.g. community organizing & activism, policy advocacy, education) to confront stigma, discrimination, and victimization that contribute to mental and physical health disparities among QT youth. With the goal of promoting social justice for QT youth, Dr. Paceley embeds their research in principles of anti-oppressive practice and theoretical frameworks such as social-ecological systems theory, minority stress theory, and critical theories. Their scholarship is rooted in more than five years of social work practice experience developing, leading, and evaluating a QT community-based organization; engaging in community organizing and advocacy to promote QT equity; and direct practice experience with QT youth.

Don't forget to submit a proposal online to be a workshop or session speaker for our 22nd annual POWER Conference here at Wichita State! Our conference is open to those working in all fields, and is held annually at the WSU Metroplex. Link: https://wichitastate.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1zE6sA8nve58QkK

The theme for the 2025 conference is "EmPOWER to H.E.A.L. - Health Equity for Action and Learning". We stand at a critical juncture in the intersection of health and social work. Health equity is not merely a matter of equal access to care, but a fundamental principle that underscores the need to address the disparities and social determinants that impact individuals' health outcomes. Social work, with its deep-rooted commitment to justice and human dignity, plays a pivotal role in this endeavor.

Our conference is designed to explore the vital connections between social work and health equity, examining how we can collectively address the systemic barriers that perpetuate health disparities. Through a series of engaging presentations and speakers, we will delve into innovative practices, research findings, and policy developments that are shaping the future of our field. There are many fields of practice which intersect with health equity โ€“ mental health, addiction, aging, education, forensic, medical, child welfare, policy, military, international, and veterans.. just to name a few! We seek speakers who can contribute to these conference areas:

1. The Role of Social Work in Advancing Health Equity: Understanding how social workers can influence and advocate for changes that address the root causes of health disparities.
2. Addressing Social Determinants of Health: Examining how factors such as socioeconomic status, education, and access to resources impact health outcomes and how social workers can address these determinants.
3. Strategies for Effective Advocacy and Policy Change: Learning about successful approaches to influence policy and promote equitable practices within health and social services.
4. Cultural Competency and Inclusive Practices: Discussing the importance of culturally responsive care and the integration of diverse perspectives to better serve all communities.
5. Collaborative Approaches to Health and Social Services: Highlighting partnerships between social workers, healthcare providers, and community organizations that enhance holistic care and support.

Your participation is invaluable as we strive to bridge gaps, foster dialogue, and build actionable strategies for a more equitable health landscape. Together, we can champion the cause of health equity and work towards a future where every individual has the opportunity to achieve their highest level of health and well-being. If you have any questions, please email [email protected]. We look forward to hearing from you!

Campus resources of note to social work students!

09/11/2024

We are excited to introduce you to our visiting instructor Kelly Young, LMSW, LMAC! She has 30 yearsโ€™ experience in the areas of child welfare, domestic violence victim advocacy, and domestic violence intervention. Mrs. Young began her career in child welfare with the Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF) in 1993. In 2001 Mrs. Young began working in domestic violence victim advocacy where she spent several years providing direct services and policy advocacy at the local and state level in Kansas. In 2011 Mrs. Young returned to the field of child welfare serving in many capacities including as key infrastructure supports of coaching, training, and fidelity rating for Kansas Parent Management Training-Oregon Model (PMTO).

Mrs. Young is currently a PhD Candidate through The University of Kansas School of Social Welfare. Her research seeks to deepen our understanding of child welfare occupational trauma (CWOT) among minoritized child welfare professionals. The field of child welfare is crucial to the well-being of vulnerable populations, yet it is also marked by significant occupational stress and trauma, particularly among professionals who identify with minoritized social identities. My research aims to explore the unique experiences of occupational trauma with this demographic, employing a multi-faceted approach that integrates embodiment through body mapping, analysis, thematic analysis, and intersectionality theory.
