Meet Jeannie: Professional Development Specialist at our Texas location!

Jeannie joined MIS 4 years ago with over a decade of donation experience, in various roles. "The knowledge and experience of the intricacies of eye donation from those who built this organization and have passed it forward to those who are now here, is astounding." she says. Jeannie has an immense gratitude for our donor families. "It is a bittersweet situation, loss of life for one family and hope restored for another. What we do is only possible through the gifts from our donors and their families." Outside of work, you can find Jeannie spending time with her family, friends and cats. She also loves beaches, rollercoasters, and staying active by swimming, biking and hiking!

A tribute to: Barry Parris
"He is my hero and always has been." says his sister, Pam. In his early 20's, Barry was in an accident by a drunk driver. He had a 5% chance of surviving through the night after immediate brain surgery, but was fortunate to live many many years after. "He was such a fighter. He taught himself how to walk and write again. Built his little small house on his own , but of course with little help here and there from family and friends." Pam says. "I've never known anyone with such a big and caring heart." Pam finds comfort in knowing that even after Barry was gone, he was able to help someone else. "I do hope that one day I would get to meet anyone that he was able to help and tell them what a great person he was." As Barry would say, "God Bless".

With July 4th right around the corner, safety is key! Fireworks are fun, but they can be dangerous if not handled properly. Protect your vision and avoid eye damage or blindness by following safety precautions:

1. Wear protective eyewear.
2. Keep a safe distance from fireworks.
3. Never aim fireworks at anyone.
4. Don't handle fireworks if you're under the influence.

Nystagmus is a complex eye condition, characterized by involuntary eye movements - from side to side, up and down or round and round. This affects the ability to focus, see the world in three dimensions and recognize faces. It is caused by an abnormal functioning of the part of the brain or inner ear which regulates eye movement and positioning.

International Nystagmus Day was created by the Nystagmus Network to promote worldwide support, fund research, and raise awareness for the eye condition. To learn more, visit their website: nystagmusnetwork.org 👁️

Today we honor - a day of freedom, resilience, and the ongoing journey toward equality.

African Americans make up 13% of the U.S. population, but 28% of those are waiting for an organ transplant. Dr. Velma Scantlebury, the first African American female transplant surgeon in the U.S., reminds us: "Increasing organ donation in minority communities is not just about numbers—it's about saving lives and giving hope to families."

Your decision to register as an organ, eye, and tissue donor can help bridge this gap and save lives. Visit registerme.org to become a donor today. ❤️💛💚

Bill has been part of the team for 10 years. "I think it is amazing that someone will get to see again from the wonderful gift that was donated and that I did the recovery for it. It is rewarding to know how much my job will effect the recipient of such a life changing gift of sight." he says. Bill is a veteran of the US Navy with a decade of service in the Submarine Force. Outside of work, he enjoys baking, tailgating for Clemson football games, crosswords, shooting hoops and spending time with his wife of almost 30 years!

A tribute to: Sawyer Updike

"Standing tall at 6''6", Sawyer radiated warmth beyond his height, epitomized by his infectious smile. His family and friends cherished the moments he shared laughter and found solace in the unspoken thoughts reflected in his expressive face." says his mother, Sheri.
Sawyer was a standout in the realm of sports - from baseball to golf, and even had a passion for bass fishing. He also played tuba in the school band and was a proud Boy Scout. "Although not a man of many words, Sawyer‘s actions, and above all, his unforgettable smile, resonated deeply." Sheri says.
