Hello all~ I am offering this on 8/27/22 for the last time this year!
In 1986, I helped pioneer the ACOA/Codependence Movement here in Central Florida and opened up the Adult Children of Alcoholics/ Codependence Treatment Center. This is an ACOA (PTSD/trauma-informed) experiential/psychoeducational training for therapists and clients. It can be taken by you as a trauma-informed workshop (or training) for you to deeply understand ACOA/Codependence issues and the CPTSD/Trauma that growing up in these homes can cause.
Of course, let me know any questions. This is presented in Winter Park, FL. The cost below is our discount for a check/cash and includes the CEUs. If you need any help working out payments, let me know and I will do my best to accommodate you.

Not everyone who has experienced trauma is aware of it. There are two types of trauma. One is called “capital T” Trauma, one is called “little t” trauma. When we think of someone being traumatized, we often think of someone experiencing an event that is so unusually terrible that it could end up on the evening news. One reason trauma is limited by our culture to these big events is that we are trying to imagine the kind of scenarios that could cause psychological damage to an otherwise well-functioning adult. However, people become more resilient with age as they learn they can provide themselves with their own needs like food, water, and shelter. When we are babies and children, we are far more vulnerable and have a limited understanding of what constitutes a dangerous vs. safe situation. It is much easier to believe our lives are in jeopardy the younger we are.

A little t trauma is an event that may seem small to the casual observer but still has an impact on an individual’s nervous system and can end up affecting their behavior when they become an adult. We are more likely to have these experiences as babies and children, when the world seems bigger and more dangerous, often so early we cannot remember it happening. It can be as common an event as a parent not responding soon enough to our cry that we are hungry because they are occupied with another urgent matter. Also, many popular attempts at disciplining children will end up making the child feel in danger and leave a lasting effect. Parents not responding correctly to a baby’s attempt to illicit a smile, be picked up or fed can also feel dangerous to a little being whose existence depends entirely on someone else to meet every need.

Any time we are powerless to change a situation in which we feel our lives are in danger, we run a significant risk of encoding the experience in our nervous system in such a way that it continues to affect our feelings and behavior into adulthood. Often, we become reactive when we are reminded of that original event. Reactivity can take the form of self-criticism, anger, blame, resentment, fear, loss of motivation, shutting down, frustration, anxiety, racing thoughts, hypervigilance, irritation, etc. As a therapist, I help people heal from both little t and capital T traumas so they are in charge of their own decisions, rather than being pushed around by reactive nervous systems. That is the good news: healing from trauma is absolutely possible. It is never too late to begin the process of breaking free!

Why faking a behavior can be more healthy than authenticity.

Take it from someone who spent much of his life holding on to his authenticity with an iron grip; authenticity is not always all it is cracked up to be. It was very important for me to make sure my actions matched what I was feeling on the inside. Otherwise I felt dishonest or deceitful. Then, I learned some important things about the brain that helped me see the importance of “faking it til I make it.”

Our brains physically change every time we learn something. This process is called neuroplasticity. When we repeat behaviors over and over (including thinking and feeling certain ways) our brains thicken the wiring needed for them in order to make those behaviors easier next time.

When the brain sends signals needed to perform a new skill, it is like the signals are hacking through a dense forest with a machete. Each time that skill is repeated, the brain makes the path easier to travel. Over time, the thick forest path becomes a dirt road, and eventually, a highway.

Brains want to be efficient and want to send signals down the most robust paths, because they are easiest to travel. This is the brains “default” or “natural” choice. If we force our brain to carve a new path through a dense jungle, when it can use a highway instead, it will feel un-natural or like we are faking it, because our feelings (our brains way of telling us to take the easiest path) don’t match our behavior. If we take the highway instead, it will feel more natural or authentic.

When we decide to change an unhealthy behavior, we may have to feel inauthentic for a while while our brains begrudgingly carve a new path for the behavior we want to perform instead.

The good news is that as the brain works on the new path, the new behavior will become easier and easier, while the old behavior will once again become overgrown and cumbersome. In the end, the new behavior will feel like the natural or authentic thing to do, and the old, unhealthy behavior won’t feel like it belongs anymore.

It can be healthy, then, to fake it til you make it. Put another way, if you know a change in your behavior is the right thing to do, don’t listen to your brain when it whines about having to do some extra work and tries to entice you back to your old ways with thoughts and feelings that go against the goal you set. There is hope, your brain will adapt to the changes, leaving you with a natural, healthy new behavior, and hopefully a sense of accomplishment for taking that neurological road less traveled 🙂

This is how stress can become a self fulfilling prophesy, and what can be done about it.

Our nervous systems (including our brains) are designed to protect us from physical danger. When we are faced with a threat, our prefrontal cortex, the conscious and smart part of our brain, gives up control to our more primitive “emergency” systems, which thoughtlessly and desperately try to remove us from the danger. This is how we can instantly jump out of the way of an approaching bus without figuring out all the needed steps first, making it a great strategy for approaching busses and hungry bears.

Unfortunately, our brains cannot tell the difference between a hungry bear and the fear that we might fail a math test, or be scolded by an authority figure (which are not physical threats). In both cases, we lose usual memory capacity, ability to think clearly, and perform complicated tasks effectively. People who live with stress and anxiety can find themselves caught in a self fulfilling prophesy in which more fear leads to more mistakes with more potential consequences and more fear etc.

Neurofeedback and psychotherapy can help reestablish the brain’s sense of safety and end the negative feedback loop, leading to fewer mistakes, which increases the sense of confidence, which increases the sense of safety etc.
