These holidays can be tough for many. Some things to keep in mind.

We have to make room in our souls in order to see things and make changes in our lives.

This came up in a session the other day with a client. Usually when we have walls it is because we had to defend against something or someone in our childhood. Walls are very different than having boundaries with people. Boundaries are healthy.

Many people think setting boundaries has to be cold, callus, or conflicted. That is not the case.

Things to keep in mind.

Therapy is essential for growth. Medication can help regulate to some extent, but if we don’t dive into the root of what is going on and allow ourselves to feel it, we will always be a slave to the medication and never truly find peace.

Having a positive mindset is a good thing, but sometimes it can become toxic. If we minimize our own, or someone else’s, feelings and experiences in the name of “being positive” this can cause more issues and make us feel like we don’t have the right to feel the way we do.

Tough but true things to realize.

Keep all of these things in mind this holiday season.

So many clients ask me “ok so now what should I do”? Sometimes just allowing your self to be—with human existence— is all we need. We get so focused on being productive, even in therapy, that we forget to allow ourselves to feel fully, which can keep us stuck.

As silly as the phrasing might sound, the message is real. One of the benefits of therapy is clearing space in the mind, body, and soul to be able to plant new seeds and allow them to grow.
