For this week's Worcester Wednesday, we're focusing on our neighbors just to the west; the Tatnuck neighborhood! Like most of Worcester's west side, Tatnuck is mostly a residential area, but is also home to several key pieces of the city. Most notably, Worcester Regional Airport is located here, maintaining easy access to the city for commercial flights to and from New York City, Fort Lauderdale, and Orlando. Like most of the city, Tatnuck also has several beloved restaurants like Scruffy Murphy's, Perry's Tatnuck Deli, and the highly recommended Pepe's Taqueria. The aptly named Asian Supermarket also calls this area home, and supplies the city with a wide range of food and drink items that you simply can't find at other supermarkets in the area, while also being a key supplier for many of the vast variety of Asian restaurants that Worcester has to offer. Be sure to check back next week as we explore yet another part of the great city that we call home! 🐐

Next up on our Major Monday spotlight is one of the fastest growing undergraduate programs at WPI; Data Science! While WPI's Master of Data Science degree has existed for many years, the Bachelor's program started in 2019 with the first Data Science degrees being conferred in 2021. DS has since grown to become WPI's 7th largest major on campus, and was given a state of the art suite in our newest building, Unity Hall. With Data Science being such a diverse field, our students find themselves working on everything from creating autonomous vehicles, to building better algorithms for streaming services, completing "datathons" to aid companies in developing better life sciences tools, or analyzing gaming data for insights on running a business. No matter the field, our students are turning massive amounts of data into valuable and innovative insights that will impact our world for years to come. You can learn more about our data science program here: https://www.wpi.edu/academics/departments/data-science

For this week's Worcester Wednesday, we're highlighting two lesser-known parts of the city; the Hamilton and Lake Park neighborhoods! These areas of Worcester are home to a few gems, including Quinsigamond State Park; home to Lake Quinsigamond, which offers swimming, sailing, and one of the oldest competition rowing sites in the country. Right beside the lake, you'll find Lake Park, offering athletic fields, tennis courts, a running track, and even an ice rink! Buffone Arena is home to several area hockey teams at all levels, and often offers open skating for community members as well. Just up the hill from the park, you'll find the Worcester Ecotarium; our local museum of science and nature. Along with being a beloved family attraction, the Ecotarium has also been the sponsor for several WPI student projects over the years. Most recently, WPI students developed the Ecotarium Explorer app, creating an audio guide to help visually impaired visitors access all of the exhibits and artwork the museum has to offer. Be sure to check back next week as we explore yet another area of the city we call home 🐐

At this point in the summer, we've got Worcester Wednesday down to a science πŸ”¬ so we're showcasing Biotech Park! This area of the city refers to the campus of UMass Memorial Medical Center and UMass Medical School, who are key partners in one of WPI's several research centers, the Healthcare Delivery Institute. Along with these facilities, this area also houses several biotech and pharmaceutical organizations such as Abbvie's Bioresearch Center, Charles River Laboratories, and WuXi Biologics. The western part of the neighborhood also contains Green Hill Park; a 480 acre public park with walking & biking trails, a beautiful public golf course, sports fields and courts, and even a small zoo! Our students often volunteer in the park, and WPI Professor Steven Van Dessel (Director of Architectural Engineering) even designed the world war 1 memorial that currently stands in Memorial Grove there. Be sure to check back next week to see another unique part of the city we call home 🐐

For this Worcester Wednesday, we're highlighting the heart and soul of Worcester; downtown! Over the past 15 years, Worcester's downtown has seen a revitalization that has brought it back to its former glory and made it the envy of many other cities in the New England region. The best thing about it? It's less than a mile from WPI's campus! Want to go a see a concert? Check out The Worcester Palladium, indoors or outdoors depending on the time of year. Interested in hockey, wrestling, monster trucks, Disney characters on Ice, or something else entirely? Look up the schedule at the DCU Center and grab great tickets for cheap. Need a bite to eat? Head over to the classic Worcester institution that is George's Coney Island for the best hot dogs you've ever had... or choose one of the other dozens of restaurants in the area, it's up to you! No matter who you are or where you're from, there's always something for you to enjoy, just downtown. Be sure to check back next week to explore another part of the city that we call home 🐐

Widely recognized as the fastest developing neighborhood in Worcester, the Canal District is home to a plethora of restaurants and retail destinations that have become Worcester staples over the years, as well as the Worcester Ice Center; the closest public skating rink to campus πŸ’ Our students highly recommend El Patron, Wings Over Worcester, and Che Empanada for a meal, but if you're more in the mood for a treat, you can't go wrong with The Queen's Cups or the historic Table Talk Pies πŸ₯§ Want to do some shopping? Check out the different shops located in the Crompton Collective. Not sure where to start? Head over to the Worcester Public Market and browse the 30+ vendors that offer everything from international food options, Worcester themed gifts, specialty soaps, and so much more. For this week's Worcester Wednesday, we wanted to take you out to the ballgame ⚾️ and talk about Polar Park! Opened in 2021, Polar Park is home to the Woo Sox, the AAA affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, and is named after Worcester's own Polar Beverages. In 2019, WPI's former President Laurie Leshin announced a partnership between the university and the team to make WPI the official academic technology advisor for the Worcester Red Sox, and paved the way for our students to work with the organization on a variety of projects to improve the ballpark environment and fan experience. Every year since its opening, our community has enjoyed faculty, staff, and student nights at the park, not to mention having our students throw out the first pitch for games, and having Rev. Dean Debora Jackson of the WPI Business School sing the national anthem. Be sure to check back in next week to explore another part of Worcester with us! 🐐

For this week's Major Monday spotlight, we figured we would shoot for the moon and focus on Aerospace Engineering! πŸš€ Aero is our 6th largest major on campus and one with truly historic impact through WPI alumni Robert Goddard; the father of modern rocketry and inventor of the liquid fueled rocket. The program takes a comprehensive approach, and while students can select which avenue of the field interests them most, they'll still gain a firm foundation in everything from general chemistry and physics, to structural design and dynamics, to engineering experimentation, and beyond. Aero also enjoys great support within the WPI community through clubs and organizations like the High Powered Rocketry Club Women of Aeronautics & Astronautics, and others, giving our students great opportunities to apply what they've learned even outside of their project work. This all lends itself to Aerospace students entering their field after graduation and advancing very quickly through organizations like RTX, Blue Origin, and Nasa's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, just to name a few. Happy (founding) Father's Day! Along with several other Worcester industrialists and philanthropists, John Boynton and Ichabod Washburn are widely known as the core founders of WPI. As the story goes, Boynton wanted to found a scientific institution that would teach the theory behind being a mechanic or manufacturer, while Washburn wanted to teach the technical skills needed to be able to join those professions. The combination of these ideologies is what led to WPI's motto, "Theory and Practice," and ultimately to WPI becoming the global leader in project-based learning. With all students completing dozens of smaller projects, along with 3 major projects through their time at WPI, we hope to continue living up to the ideals that Boynton and Washburn had for the Worcester County Free Institute of Industrial Science back in 1865. You can learn more about project-based learning at WPI here; https://www.wpi.edu/project-based-learning
