Ubuntu: Honour the humanity of all people

The Tutu Courageous Leadership Course aims to inspire and empower viewers to become more courageously engaged in their lives and in the lives of others by focusing on the core internal and interpersonal qualities needed to take consistent action to heal themselves and society.

This lesson explores our shared humanity through the concept of ubuntu, which was so foundational to the Arch. It demonstrates how his example of compassion, forgiveness, solidarity, and generosity of spirit flowed from his deep awareness of our interconnectedness with each other and with the whole of our environment.

The video highlights the power of living in a way that honours our own humanity and the humanity of others, including those
who are different from us and those with whom we disagree.

Today, we commemorate the birth and legacy of Nelson Mandela, a global political icon who committed his life to the attainment of peace, justice, and human rights. A commitment that urged people around the world to become active citizens who oppose all forms of injustice.

Mandela's close friendship with Archbishop Desmond Tutu was a pillar of South Africa's struggle against and recovery from apartheid. Both Nobel Peace Prize laureates, they devoted their lives to processes of reconciliation and nation-building, a commitment that left an indelible mark on the world. Their bond was a testament to the power of unity and compassion in the face of diverse forms of oppression.

In celebration of Mandela Day, may your good deeds extend beyond 67 minutes. We remember the words of Desmond Tutu: "The tidal wave of change is made up of a million ripples".

We warmly invite all primary and high schools to visit our Truth to Power Exhibition, where students can engage in grade-specific school curriculum programmes and embark on a transformative journey through the history of the anti-apartheid struggle and the life of Desmond Tutu. Our exhibition offers a profound educational experience, featuring interactive audio-visuals that immerse students in the lived contexts of courageous activists who fought against injustice. In addition to our educational programmes, we draw inspiration from diverse individual legacies in history and commemorate specific memorial days.

Today, we reflect on Ashley Kriel, a youth activist in the anti-apartheid resistance in Cape Town during the 1980s, who dedicated his life to the struggle for freedom and social justice. On 9 July 1987, he was tragically murdered by apartheid police. Remembering Kriel serves as a reminder that young people were at the forefront of the struggle within our country. Through our exhibition, students will gain insights into the resilience, determination, and collective efforts that shaped the fight against apartheid. This experience is not only an opportunity for education but also to inspire a new generation to champion justice and equality. We look forward to welcoming you soon!

Today, we remember Solomon Kalushi Mahlangu, born on 10 July 1956 in Pretoria. Due to school closures from anti-apartheid riots, he left Mamelodi High School and joined the ANC in September 1976, training as a soldier for Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) in Angola and Mozambique.

Returning to South Africa in June 1977 to support student protests, he was involved in a confrontation with police that led to his arrest for murder. Despite another person being responsible for the killings, Mahlangu was found guilty of murder and terrorism and sentenced to death by hanging on 2 March 1978. His ex*****on on 6 April 1979 sparked international protests against apartheid.

His legacy is honoured through the Solomon Mahlangu Square, the Solomon Mahlangu Freedom College, and a posthumous award, "The Order of Mendi for Bravery in Gold," recognising his bravery and sacrifice for freedom and democracy in South Africa. May his soul rest in power, and his revolutionary legacy be remembered.

Action: Do what you can where you are

The Tutu Courageous Leadership Course aims to inspire and empower viewers to become more courageously engaged in their lives and in the lives of others by focusing on the core internal and interpersonal qualities needed to take consistent action to heal themselves and society.

This lesson explores the power of individuals to contribute to social change. It describes how the Arch became a moral leader not by pursuing a public profile, but by living daily in a way that advanced freedom, justice, dignity, and peace. Using the life of the Arch, it emphasises that even in the most challenging circumstances, change is possible when ordinary individuals consistently take small actions of moral courage and inspire others to do the same. In so doing, it highlights the responsibility we each have to shape our shared future.
