Burglar hits S-West centre for disabled | News24 A brazen thief who targeted the Gabriella Centre has forced the Somerset West facility to champion an online crowdfunding campaign in hopes of funds to upgrade their security system following the safety breach.

With a heavy heart we are urgently pleading for help.

As many of you know, Gabriella Centre is a 24-hour residential and therapeutic educational centre for children with profound physical and intellectual disabilities. We provide a place for our attendees to be cared for and loved unconditionally in a safe environment to assist them thrive in their daily lives. It is our highest priority to ensure their safety, but a recent incident has made it clear that we need to take immediate action to enhance our security measures.

In the early hours of Wednesday morning 14 August 2024, at approximately 3:45 AM, our centre was violated by an intruder. While our children were asleep and our dedicated staff were on duty, someone broke into our facility and stole valuable items. The intruder was able to bypass our current security systems, which after further investigation appeared to be faulty and did not send any signals.

Material items can be replaced but this incident has deeply shaken us as even with full activity in centre, this intruder entered our home, and we are determined to ensure that such a breach of safety never happens again. To do so, we urgently need to upgrade our security systems, which includes installing advanced boundary cameras that will sound an alarm when a barrier is crossed, as well as extending our boundary wall to prevent easy access.

However, these necessary upgrades come with a significant cost—one that we cannot cover without your help. We are reaching out to you, our compassionate and supportive community, to ask for your assistance in helping us in raising the funds needed to protect the vulnerable children in our care.

Every donation, no matter how small, will make a difference. Your generosity will go directly towards creating a safer environment for our children, allowing us to focus on what we do best—providing them with the care, love, and support they need.

Ollie is a trained canine therapy dog, he comes to socialize with our children but he also provides emotional support.

Today we celebrated a VERY special birthday. Today, Lucia turned EIGHTEEN years old!! 🎀💕

For those of you who don't know, Lucia has been attending Gabriella Centre for over 16 years! First as just a day care attendee and recently a resident.

Lucia is an absolute miracle and has defied every negative word spoken against her by medical professionals. Lucia is so strong! We also believe this has a lot to do with how dedicated her family is to making sure Lucia's every need is met.

We are so well pleased in you Lucie, and so is your mommy who smiles down at you from heaven. ❤️❤️❤️

Today we sadly say goodbye to our amazing friend and volunteer physiotherapist Sarah, who worked together with our in-house physiotherapist Tasneem for 12 weeks.
Thank you for your kindness, caring touch, and warm, compassionate heart. All of us at Gabriella Centre will miss you, but can't wait for you to visit South Africa one day soon!

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you to Checkers! Today we went to the opening of the new Paardevlei Checkers Somerset west and they blessed our children with this incredible voucher so that we can purchase groceries, cleaning supplies and other necessities.

A BIG thank you to COFCO South Africa for choosing Gabriella Centre as the beneficiary of their companies raffle and collectively raised an amazing R7175.00 for our amazing children!

A big THANK YOU to the Parel Vallei Interact Club for fundraising on behalf of our centre and raising a very generous R 5000 for our children! Wow, we are so grateful for this love and support.

On Friday, we sadly said farewell to our dear friend and volunteer physiotherapist Ladina, who came all the way from Switzerland to assist our therapy programs from January to April.

Ladina, thank you for all the love and care you poured into the lives of the children and staff here at Gabriella Centre. You will always be apart of the GC family.

We will miss you but look forward to you visiting us one day in the near future. 🦋💛
