Incident Report: Positive Break-In
Time/Date:
03:47 AM, 14 August
Location:
Gabrielle Centre
4 Helderberg Street
Early on the morning of 14 August 2024, CCTV footage captured a suspect entering the Gabrielle Centre by scaling a neighbour's boundary wall, bypassing the electric fencing and security beams. The suspect proceeded to steal valuables very closeby to staff and children with disabilities at this 24-hour facility.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) responded. A full investigation is underway. CCTV footage has been shared with the relevant authorities, and we hope for a swift arrest.
This incident has left the members of that organisation in shock and deeply traumatised.
We urgently request your support through donations to help upgrade their security system.
The Gabrielle Centre, an NPO dedicated to children with disabilities, is establishing a platform where donations can be made to replace stolen items and enhance their surveillance system.
The area coordinator and Neighbourhood Watch management visited the facility to assess additional needs.
SWNW has donated R4,000 towards the Gabriella Centre to upgrade their security system
A Section 18A certificate can be issued for tax deductions on donations for businesses. We will share the donation details as soon as they come to hand.
Call to Action:
Your donations will help ensure the safety and security of this vulnerable community. Please support them at this critical time.

ALERT – 11:50 update - 7 August
Somerset West power restored, Eskom working on Strand
Power supply to the Somerset West area has been restored.
Eskom teams are on site and working to restore the power in the Strand area.
The City apologises for the inconvenience suffered when a master Eskom transformer tripped following theft and vandalism.
City and Eskom teams have been attending to this.
The City is following up with Eskom regularly.
We urge residents to unplug all inverters to avoid the system from being overloaded and tripping when the power is restored.
🎉🥳Congratulations to our LUCKY DRAW winner for July!
Thanks for your support.

At 10:55 AM on Saturday 3 August 2024, a resident posted on a Heldervue Neighbourhood Watch group that her son's car radio had been stolen from their driveway. She saw a man in a grey top and tracksuit pants running away with the radio. Although she tried to chase him, she couldn't catch up, and it seemed he had gotten away with it. The resident opened a case at SAPS.
Then, at 11:33 AM, a Steynsrust Neighbourhood Watch group message enquired if anyone had lost a radio. A Steynsrust resident reported that a fishing rod had been stolen and noticed that the thief also had a radio.
This resident chased the thief, who eventually dropped both items and ran off. The Heldervue resident was informed about the recovery of her son's radio and later retrieved it from a Steynsrust Neighbourhood Watch member.
This incident highlights the power of the community and the effectiveness of the Somerset West Neighbourhood Watch (SWNW).

PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Various roads are flooding in the Strand.
We beg you- DO NOT DRIVE PAST AND/ OR THROUGH THESE STREETS OUT OF CURIOSITY.
If you drive through there, you create waves of water into already flooding properties, causing more havoc and distress, which quite frankly is extremely disrespectful. We do not take pleasure in others’ misfortune.
If you do not have to leave your house, please remain inside.
If you do have to be on the road, please keep the following in mind:
- keep a safe following distance
- slower speed enables better control of your vehicle
- avoid driving through large bodies of water as there might be sinkholes or debris underneath the murky water, which is not visible and can cause unnecessary damage to your vehicle
If you are in a position to assist and/or help those who require assistance, please do so with care and utmost safety.
Stay safe!
A small two-line message on our Observation WhatsApp group this morning resulted in the apprehension of 2 suspects for the possession of possibly stolen property.
THANK YOU to the observation member who reported something that he believed to be out of place.
THANK YOU to our trusted security partners (Secure Rite Security and Gordon's Bay Security) who responded and found the license disc and numberplate to be mismatched which raised further suspicion.
THANK YOU to Strand SAPS who loaded the alleged suspects and took them to the station for further questioning and processing.
All of this made possible by having the necessary infrastructure and working relationships in place.

These two adventurous dogs were spotted running along Lourensford Road on Saturday and ended up having a sleepover at our Somerset West Neighbourhood Watch Communications Centre.
After notifying Helderberg Animal Welfare and sharing posts on social media, including with our SWNW members, the dogs spent the night with Sheila, our Comms Centre Controller, who kindly shared her meal with them.
The next morning, the dogs were happily reunited with their owners.
