WIZO Cape Town is proud to be part of the heartwarming "Love Letters to Israel" initiative, started by one of our branches, the Ruth Branch. Elizabeth Campbell, who is not Jewish and lives in Cape Town, launched this campaign despite South Africa leading a genocide case against Israel before the International Court of Justice. Why did she decide to send love letters to the people of Israel? And what is WIZOโs connection to these letters? See picture posts below ๐๐ผ
We are deeply grateful to Elizabeth and the Ruth Branch for their dedicated love and support of WIZO and Israel.

Recent graduates of WIZO Gan Vanof Youth Village returned to visit this month in an emotional reunion with former classmates, teachers and counselors.
They shared about their lives, particularly how the war has affected them (quite a few who are on active duty came in their IDF uniforms), and how Gan Vanof equipped them for life as engaged, active citizens.

๐ Happy Youth Day! ๐ 17 June 2024 ๐
Today, we celebrate the energy, creativity and resilience of our youth. Let's recognise the incredible potential within our young people and empower them to shape a brighter future.
Shabbat Shalom! Please pray for the safe return of our hostages ๐
On the heels of the return of four hostages this week, we are basking in a rare moment of joy. Shavuot, with all its many themes -- of harvest and bearing fruit, of working this holy land of ours, of receiving the Torah and the strength of female leadership (Ruth), this year we add the themes of freedom and hope and resilience.
Chag Shavuot Sameach to our dearest around the world.
Let's spread love and hope this Shabbat. Shabbat Shalom!
This week the Etzion branch arranged for musician Lance Herman to entertain the guests at Highlands House. His captivating voice and musical talent transformed the afternoon into a joyous event, filled with clapping, dancing and an enthusiastic encore. The day concluded with a delightful tea.
Yom Yerushalayim, or Jerusalem Day, which begins at sunset tonight, marks the Hebrew anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem โ the first time the holy city came under Jewish rule since the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE.
A few interesting historical facts about Israel's capital: according to one source, Jerusalem has been sacked 23 times, captured or recaptured 44 times, attacked 52 times, and destroyed at least twice. But it has been divided only once.
And several modern facts: according to the Jerusalem Research Institute survey just published, Jerusalem is the largest city in Israel by a large margin โ 1,005,900 residents: more than twice the size of Tel Aviv!
It is also home to the largest foreign population in Israel, numbering 44,900.
Happy Jerusalem Day!

Amid the glitz of the Cannes Film Festival, French-Israeli Laura Blajman-Kadar made a powerful statement. A survivor of the October 7 massacre, she walked the red carpet in a striking yellow dress adorned with the faces of Israeli hostages and the words "Bring them home." Despite security urging her to leave, Laura's message was clear: we will not let the world forget. Her relentless courage inspires us all to continue the fight for justice and remembrance. ๐๐๏ธ

WIZO Cape Town is honoured and proud to have handed over two wheelchairs to two very special boys, Caleb and Matthew. Thanks to the Wheelchair of Hope project, these young boys can now move around easily, feeling more integrated into normal life. We are thrilled to have made a difference in their lives.
Tomorrow is Lag B'Omer, a holiday that traditionally celebrates the end of a mourning period of 33 days with bonfires and joyous celebrations. There are so many families still mourning, and their suffering is not yet over...
In their honour, we mark Lag B'Omer this year and we continue to mourn with them in solidarity.
No Jewish holiday can be a celebration this year, not while there are hostages in Gaza, families displaced from their homes, towns lying in ruin and soldiers dying in the north and south of Israel. But we continue to mark the holidays because we refuse to allow terror to destroy our Jewish traditions.
In the photo is a group of children in our domestic violence shelter in the south who are lighting a Lag B'Omer fire made of wood and cloth items to signify how very different this year's holiday is.
On Wednesday, 22 May, the WIZO Cape Town Gilah branch hosted an insightful fundraiser with guest speaker Jacques Weber, who delivered a captivating talk about the upcoming elections. His expertise and eloquence made a significant impact on everyone present. Jacques was not only incredibly knowledgeable, but also engaging. Guests were treated to a delicious tea and all attendees left the morning feeling much more confident and informed about their voting decisions. Thank you, Jacques, for such an amazing and enlightening presentation!
On Sunday, the Shiri Branch hosted a sold-out, thought-provoking fundraiser featuring the South African Premier screening of the award-winning short film 'Over My Dead Body'. The screening was followed by an engaging Q&A session with creative Director Meital Cohen Navarro and well-known Broadcaster Lisa Chiat.
The film delved into taboo subjects of religious intolerance and intermarriage outside of one's culture, sparking deep thought and intriguing questions among our audience.
A heartfelt thank you to Meital for sharing her time and talent and to Lisa for guiding the enlightening and interesting discussion.
Wishing you and your family a peaceful Shabbat. Thinking of our brave soldiers and those held hostage ๐
๐ถ๐ Yesterday, the WIZO Cape Town branch, Shiri, brought joy and entertainment to the residents at Highlands House. It was the branch's first visit and the atmosphere was electric! The residents were treated to the beautiful melodies of four talented pianists from Herzlia School, who poured their hearts into their performances. In addition, Elanit serenaded the audience with three well-known songs, adding an extra layer of delight to the afternoon.
What made the event even more special was that one of the performers had his great-grandmother as a resident at Highlands House, proudly supporting her great-grandson's performance. It was a heartwarming moment that touched us all.
A big thank you to Highlands House for arranging such special occasions where young and old can come together, share moments of joy and create lasting memories.
On Monday morning, WIZO collaborated with the South African Zionist Federation - Cape Council to host a special morning of thanks to our Christian supporters.
We were privileged to have the opportunity to listen to special guest speaker Ilse Strauss, from Bridges of Peace in Israel, whose tireless work and dedication to supporting Israel left us all deeply inspired. Her insightful talk shed light on the invaluable assistance and support provided by Bridges of Peace in Israel, reinforcing our appreciation for their impactful contributions. Ilse's words resonated deeply, leaving us emotional yet filled with hope and gratitude.
We wish to express our heartfelt thanks to all our Christian supporters for their unwavering love and dedication to Israel and the Jewish community.
Today is the International Day of Families. It is a day that provides an opportunity to promote awareness of issues relating to families and to increase the knowledge of the social, economic and demographic challenges affecting them.
Our WIZO is a loving and warm family that plays a major role in fostering healthy relationships as well as a critical role in shaping Israeli society. WIZO is the family that provides invaluable support to those in need in order for them to thrive throughout their lives. Those under WIZOโs care know that their WIZO family will stand by them and will empower them, and their families, through education and social services.
On this day, extend your familyโs warmth and support WIZO by volunteering or donating to those in need as you celebrate the love, bond and precious moments you have within your own families.
The little ones at one of WIZOs day care centres proudly sing their hearts out: Am Israel Chai! ๐๐ฎ๐ฑ๐
There are 21 days between the first night of Passover and today, the evening of Yom Haatzmaut, Israel's 76th Independence Day. 21 days of raw, complex emotions and fundamental, existential themes that touch upon humanity's very core: slavery, freedom, faith, leadership, genocide, war, nationhood and independence.
At the culmination of such an intense period and after 219 days of war, we celebrate. The celebration is muted, and mixed with many other emotions, but it is nevertheless a celebration.
We have a Jewish homeland. Am Israeli Chai. ๐ฎ๐ฑ
