Rea Thusana Foundation

Relief • Rehabilitation • Reintegration

Our heart is to:

1st: disciple & rehabilitate (deal with trauma, drug addiction, and abuse)

2nd: training and employment (upskill our homeless neighbors with entrepreneurial skills to create their jobs)

3rd: assist our friends to find affordable housing and help with family reconciliation.

4th: Create a safe environment for our friends to come to when they need counseling or someone to talk

There are currently more than 4500 individuals displaced in Cape Town due to the extreme flooding conditions, with many facing hunger and the imminent threat of homelessness.

I urge places of worship to consider keeping their doors open as a sanctuary for those in distress.

Special thanks to for collaborating with our church to offer assistance to those impacted by the storm.

Loving your neighbor means giving them food you would eat.

One of the key lessons I’ve gained from my time in rehabilitation is the significance of providing individuals who come out of homelessness with fresh and nutritious meals, as opposed to expired or leftover items.

It’s crucial to uphold people’s dignity by offering food that meets high standards, reflecting the respect and care we hold for each individual. Giving individuals the autonomy to choose their meals fosters a sense of empowerment and dignity.

By ensuring that those struggling with trauma and addiction have access to proper nutrition, adequate rest, and suitable clothing, we can significantly impact their well-being and recovery process.

Remember, it’s not just about food; it’s about the transformative power of therapy. If you wouldn’t eat it, don’t give it.

Let’s continue to prioritize dignity and wellness for all.

Trafficking among our unhoused neighbors.

In the wake of the Mayor of Cape Town’s proclamation regarding the eviction of individuals experiencing homelessness in our city, I felt compelled to intervene in the discussions unfolding within his comment section. Many people seemed joyful about the announcement without considering the profound challenges faced by those on the streets - from enduring trauma and battling addiction to navigating gang influences. Contrary to the assumption that individuals simply choose to be on the streets, the reality is far more complex. It is disheartening to acknowledge that some of our unhoused neighbors are trapped in trafficking scenarios, compelled to beg on the streets, trade drugs for protection, and endure heinous acts of violence. Unfortunately, seeking help from authorities or medical facilities often proves futile as they are not taken seriously until external intervention is initiated. The system, it appears, remains indifferent to their plight. Oftentimes, we are compelled to engage with gangsters, who are also trafficked to provide assistance to vulnerable women, placing ourselves at risk in the process.

For many of the unhoused, their paths lead only to incarceration, mental health facilities, or tragic ends, when they are no longer deemed useful. To imply that individuals choose to remain on the streets oversimplifies a complex web of circumstances and traumas that entrap them. The reality is graver than meets the eye - our unhoused neighbors find themselves in a cycle of exploitation, where their vulnerabilities are exploited to maintain control. Their trauma becomes a weapon, propelling them towards addiction as a means of subjugation.

I ask you, before passing judgment on those living on the streets, to approach the issue with curiosity and empathy, unclouded by the shield of privilege. These individuals have names, stories, and pain that would overwhelm most of us if we were to walk in their shoes.

I express gratitude to those who lend an ear to their cries and I eagerly anticipate our forthcoming discussion NFN. I believe education dispels ignorance and nurtures compassion.

The determination of the “best city in the world” should undoubtedly hinge on its treatment of the most vulnerable members of society, ensuring that resources are made accessible to the impoverished, not solely to the privileged few.

A heartfelt appreciation to the Socio-economic Rights Institute of South Africa for their unwavering commitment to safeguarding the rights of our unhoused brethren and advocating for a comprehensive strategy to facilitate their seamless transition.

“Thank you for visiting us and not giving up on us.
- MK

When I received the news regarding the evictions of our unhoused neighbors, a profound sense of sorrow enveloped me, prompting an immediate visit to these extraordinary individuals who had endured homelessness in Muizenberg for over 17 years. It was during this visit that I found comfort and motivation, reaffirming the belief that advocating for the marginalized is vital cause.

This issue is deeply personal to me, devoid of any political inclination. I have friends residing on the streets, individuals whom I consider as family. They possess unique identities and stories, having endured profound hardships. I refuse to remain silent and will vehemently oppose any endeavors to displace those who have endured such hardships and those who continue to live without a secure dwelling, lacking a safe shelter.

Every person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their social or economic standing. Individuals experiencing homelessness are not inherently lesser in society; they are individuals in need of housing, community, and a sense of belonging.

I express my sincere gratitude to Oesis for providing a safe haven for our cherished friends to heal and rebuild their lives.

I am immensely proud of you all. Thank you for your thoughts and support.

We lobe you.

Today, I am facing some challenges. Despite our efforts this week to assist more than 6 unhoused individuals in finding a safe place, we were only able to help one. In Cape Town, there are approximately 14,000 people experiencing homelessness, outnumbering the available beds in shelters.

Unfortunately, those with mental health issues, disabilities, and the elderly have limited options for referrals as many places are at full capacity or do not accommodate families, couples, or individuals with pets. As winter approaches, the situation becomes even more dire for our unhoused neighbors who are being forced off the streets by the city of Cape Town.

It was difficult to inform my brother that I could not secure him a safe space, but I provided him with a sheltersuit to keep him warm and dry at night. He struggles with mental health and tries to sell flowers for food, often running into trouble with security personnel. It is disheartening to witness the decline of our compassion towards one another, as profit and convenience take precedence over caring for our neighbors.

As the city evicts those living on the street, I pray activists will rise against this, and the church and NGOs will welcome those affected and give them dignity.

PERIOD POVERTY.

Period poverty is a real thing, especially for women experiencing homelessness, who don’t have access to a bathroom and have to choose between buying food and a tampon every month. Most of them end up using tissue paper from public toilets, pieces of clothing such as socks, or anything that will serve as a makeshift sanitary pad.

NO WOMAN SHOULD GO THROUGH THAT.

Thankfully, a brilliant young man, I met a year ago , responded to ’s request and gathered sanitary towels for our unhoused neighbors. Thank you and for giving dignity to vulnerable women who are experiencing homelessness.

, you have an amazing leader in your school.

It breaks my heart to not only hear about the abuse of women in SA, but also to witness the pain and suffering firsthand as I walk beside them to safety.

It's especially disheartening as a man, feeling the weight of their fear and vulnerability.

The reality is that women in South Africa are not safe, and it pains me to see how the justice system continues to fail them.

It's a heartbreaking and infuriating situation that we must confront and address.

I am just glad she is safe.

When I mentioned that I was going to relocate to Wynberg, I was advised to be careful. And now, I understand the reason behind that advice.

It was heart-wrenching to witness the extent of exploitation endured by the hungry and unhoused neighbors on the streets, at the hands of drug dealers and gangsters. The most distressing part was observing the mistreatment of homeless women in particular.

In fact, one of the drug dealers attempted to intimidate us, trying to prevent us from connecting with the homeless community in the area. However, he hesitated and withdrew when he discovered who we were.

To be honest, it infuriated me. I struggled to keep my emotions in check.

Please remember us in your prayers. This work is not easy, there are a lot of pharaohs (gangsters) who make our work difficult and keep our unhoused neighbors enslaved on the street with drugs, s*x and money.

Love,

The close proximity between individuals fosters a sense of connection, while distance instills fear.

I express my gratitude for being part of a church community that warmly embraces and provides support for the most vulnerable members of our society.

We are committed to advocating for the rights of the weak, the fatherless, the poor, and the oppressed. (Psalm 82:3)

May love, restoration, and meaningful relationships flourish in our community.
