Marevol Lab

MAREVOL(Marine Evolution) laboratory is based at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

We approach research topics such as conservation, ecology and taxonomy of the marine realm from an evolutionary perspective; primarily through the use of genetic techniques. Through the use of established and novel genetic techniques, we are able to determine genetic relationships between organisms, based on accumulated differences within their DNA. These forms of data allow scientists to develop

SANBI's Sea Fish Atlas project is based on photographic record submissions of marine fish shared by scientists, students, scuba enthusiasts, citizen scientists and your average joe! Each record is verified by an expert taxonomist before it is submitted to the database. Check out the latest edition to find out what new species have been discovered and recorded for the first time along our coastlines.
