SELECT COMMITTEE ON THE 2022-23 RIVER MURRAY FLOOD EVENT • Regional Visit to Mannum

A big shoutout to Simone Bailey - Mayor Mid Murray Council - We thank Mayor Mid Murray Council for her strong leadership and compassionate efforts helping her community through the most devastating times during the floods.

It was important that we conduct these regional meetings to speak directly to community members impacted by the flood events including farmers, irrigators, RDA, Local Council, business operators and other stakeholders.

This Select Committee of the Legislative Council has been established to inquire into the 2022-23 River Murray flood event including the preparation, response and recovery.

It was a privilege to join the Select Committee members on site visits and regional meetings. The Select Committee is diligently chaired by Hon. Nicola Centofanti MLC, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council.

We thank everyone who have given their valuable time to provide insights, important feedback; raise serious concerns and issues about the devastation, damages and financial losses the floods events had impacted on their livelihoods, properties, families and mental wellbeing.

SELECT COMMITTEE ON THE 2022-23 RIVER MURRAY FLOOD EVENT • Regional Visit

Thank you Corey Jones for hosting our visit at his farm and sharing his heartbreaking experience with the flood. He is a third-generation dairy farmer, who became the first-generation buffalo farmer. He established the South Australian Buffalo Company in 2014 at his family’s property in Mypolonga.

Corey’s farm was virtually submerged by water during the Murray River flood of 2022/23, and he was forced to move his herd to Wall Flat. All 350 acres of his farm pastures were under water, and their dairy was marooned on an island. The clean-up following the flood was long and slow. Corey said the help from other farmers and his community were instrumental in his business surviving the flood.

It was important that we went on sites to speak directly to community members impacted by the flood events including farmers, irrigators, RDA, Local Council, business operators and other stakeholders.

WATER 💦 BIRDS 🦆

Ducks are definitely the most common birds seen along the waterways, especially the Australian Wood Ducks. 🦆

Did you know? All Ducks, Geese, Swans belong to the family Anatidae.

The Anatidae are the biological family of water birds that includes ducks, geese, and swans. The family has a cosmopolitan distribution, occurring on all the world's continents except Antarctica. These birds are adapted for swimming, floating on the water surface, and in some cases diving into shallow water.

Waterbirds depend on healthy wetland ecosystems to breed, forage for food and roost. So, when you are out and about along the Murray River - enjoy the scenery and recreational activities but respect the beauty and ecosystem of nature and wildlife.

This photo was taken when I was visiting Mannum as part of the Select Committee (Impact on River Communities from the Floods).

💙Republic of Vietnam Air Force Veterans’ Association in South Australia (RVNAF Veterans Association SA) - 69th Anniversary Commemoration of The Republic of Vietnam Air Force

The South Vietnam Air Force, officially the Republic of Vietnam Air Force (RVNAF) was the aerial branch of the Republic of Vietnam Military Forces, the official military of the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam) from 1955 to 1975. The RVNAF began with a few hand-picked highly skilled men chosen to fly alongside French pilots during the State of Vietnam era. It eventually grew into the world's top 10 largest air force at the height of its power, in 1974. It was dissolved in 1975 after the Fall of Saigon; subsequently many of its members emigrated to USA, Australia and other countries.

2024 marks the 69th Anniversary of the establishment of The Republic of Vietnam Air Force in 1955. It was an honour to be invited once again by the President, Mr Dang-Thao Nguyen and Committee of RVNAF Veterans Association in Australia and RVNAF Veterans Association in South Australia to attend the 2024 commemorative event.

It was an important commemoration service for us to honour and pay respects to freedom fighters, service men and women of the defence forces and those who made the ultimate sacrifice. The Vietnamese community came together with the Australian veterans community and dignitaries to honour the bravery, loyalty and sacrifice of the fallen soldiers and war heroes, also the recognition of veterans and their families for their enormous contributions.

Vietnamese Community School Mid-Year Assembly “Share, Show and Tell” 2024

The Vietnamese Community School was founded in 1980. For more than forty years since its establishment, the school’s curriculum and activities have remained consistent with its founding principles:

❇️Helping students to have a thorough understanding of their roots;
❇️Helping to bridge the generational gap between parents and children; and
❇️Helping future generations to maintain the Vietnamese language and culture.

Heartfelt Congratulations to Principal Quin Tran, teachers, parents and volunteers for their dedication and hard work to delivering classes and providing love and generous support to create conducive learning environments for children to participate and thrive in Vietnamese language and culture in South Australia.

It was an amazing experience to hear the sweet voices of young students speaking, story telling and singing in their traditional language and applying their bilingual skills.

Italian Historical Society of South Australia
2024 Fundraiser Dinner Dance and Release of Interview with the amazing
Rita Bianca Palumbo, President of
Sicilia Social and Sports Club

The Italian Historical Society of South Australia Inc. aims to collect, preserve, and promote the history of Italian immigration to South Australia; to establish a repository of many stories, letters, documents, photographs, and any other item associated with Italian immigration to South Australia; and to record the oral history and celebrate the contribution of Italian immigrants to the growth of South Australia.

These stories and relevant documents are then submitted to the State Library of South Australia to be included in the J. D. Somerville Oral History Collection which strives to represent a spoken account of South Australia and South Australian experiences. The oral stories will be transcribed and deposited in the State Library of South Australia.

The Society has embarked on a project to record and leave for posterity the experience of Italian immigrants in South Australia. The name of the project is: “A Trunk Full of Dreams and a Suitcase Full of Memories: Stories of Italian Immigrants in South Australia.”

It was a great honour to be invited by (Joe) Giuseppe Geracitano, President, Jenny Geracitano and the management committee to attend the dinner featuring the Guest of Honour, Rita Bianca Palumbo - it was wonderful to learn about the remarkable resilience, determination, community service and contributions of Rita as the presentation of her lifetime work and achievements were unfolded , what a most fitting tribute to recognise a special lady with a heart of Gold 💛 Congratulations to Rita for being appointed as the Ambassador for the Italian Historical Society of South Australia!

The Dante Alighieri Society is a non-profit organization supported by passionate volunteers who assist in promoting Italian language and culture. They provide a gateway for people all over the world to the culture, language, food, wine, history, art, opera, music, cinema, fashion and industry of Italy.

Congratulations and thank you to Edmondo Palombo, President and Committee of Dante Alighieri Society of South Australia for inviting me to an event a part of“Iconic Women" series.

The event is titled "I Blame Love - Gaspara Stampa, a (almost) forgotten voice of the Italian Renaissance", beautifully presented by Prof. Alessandro Boria. It was insightful and very entertaining.

The event also featured a wonderful presentation, by a local association called "Ascolta Women Inc.", of their recently published book titled "Stories from la terra". Ascolta Women Inc is a collective of creative multi-generation Italian-Australian and Italian affiliated women. It was great to meet and learn from four fabulous authors from Ascolta Women today.

A fantastic afternoon and great to catch up so many wonderful friends including President of South Australian Italian Association Inc. and so many community leaders. Thank you to everyone for their outstanding support.
