Community Hubs Australia

It’s been an impressive year for community hubs across Australia, reaching over 14,000 families.

Thank you to our hub teams, partner schools and agencies, volunteers and services. Most of all thank you to all the hub participants who come along each week to connect their children with playgroups, to learn English, to have a chat with someone or to connect with a service for support.

We are so grateful for the people who make this possible, and for the people who come along to connect, share and learn. Wishing everyone a safe and restful break over summer.

We often talk about the impact volunteering has in community hubs, for the individual and for those they support. Whether it’s by volunteering in the hub, at the school canteen, or teaching families (often mothers with pre-school aged children) how to sail.

One of the benefits of volunteering in hubs is that it gives people the opportunity to learn new skills, which in turn, often helps people find work.

Last week, around 25 of our Community hub enjoyed sailing at the lake with the amazing Sailability volunteers. Thank you so very much to the Shepparton English Language Centre gifting us one of their sessions. We are truly grateful for a wonderful morning, to learn more about water safety as well as sailing.

Congratulations to our Brimbank community hubs in Victoria who celebrated their 10th anniversary today.

Based in primary schools, hubs provide opportunities for participants (often mothers with preschool aged children) to connect, share, and learn.

Community hubs like Chester Hill North Public School provide families (often mothers with preschool aged children) with invaluable support, a safe place, a sense of community and shared experiences.

In this article by NSW Department of Education, participant Faten Fatad (parent of a Year 2 child) shared, “I feel like this is my second home now and when I do go home, I can’t stop talking to my kids about what I’ve been doing”.

“I really believe having this hub has actually changed the community.

“I’ve seen new parents come who didn’t know anyone, now they feel so welcome, so comfortable, they’re willing to try out new things. It’s amazing”.

Hub unites community at Chester Hill North Chester Hill North Public School is changing the community, one Zumba class at a time. Ben Worsley reports.

Our team had the chance to join in this celebration, spending time with the wonderful people that run hubs and listening to participants tell us what the hub meant to them when they first arrived in Australia.

“Hubs provide invaluable support, a safe place, a sense of community and shared experiences. The hub tribe makes everyone less lonely and more empowered”.

That’s filled our cup - 💕.

Community hubs provide a wonderful space for people (often women with preschool aged children) to meet new friends and learn more about different cultures - often by the hub participants themselves.

Hubs are a great place to connect, share and learn.

When we look at photos like these, we see friendships being formed. Some for a lifetime.

Community hubs in primary schools provide the start to that connection - whether through crafting together, bringing preschool aged children to playgroup or building on English language skills.

Often we see school parents supporting other families through initiatives like these. Organised by community hubs based in primary schools, food pantries are another way where parents with preschool aged children come to connect, share, and learn.

Paint The Farm Read is encouraging parents/carers to read with their children regularly. Our box is now in the hallway at The Hub and we would love for you to borrow, take or swap books and read regularly at home with your children. Please check it out next time you visit 🙂

Parenting workshops in community hubs are one of the many ways parents can learn more about their children as they grow and get ready for school (and life)! Importantly, hubs are based in primary schools where families with young children spend a lot of time.

Just a reminder that if you want help with signing up for this online parenting course we are offering help to do this at Salisbury Family Hub tomorrow Wednesday 25th October at 12noon. Please book in.

Hi Everyone,

I'm excited to offer FREE Parenting Seminars for our school families from now until 17th November 2023. The course is called Thriving Kids and Parents Parenting Seminars and is available online for parents of children aged 4-12 years old.

These seminars will teach you practical strategies to help your child:
-Manage everyday worries
-Build healthy peer relationships
-Thrive now and into adolescence

To register see the attached flier and go to the QR code. Choose the Parent option and sign up. There is a confidential questionnaire to do first, then choose the times that suit you to do the course online. The course is at set times as it is presented live online at the time that you select. Each session goes for 2 hours. Please note that the times are AEST so it's really 30 minutes earlier for us in SA.

I will be running 2 sign up sessions to assist any families having difficulties or needing help to register. These sessions will be Wednesday 25th October and Wednesday 1st November from 12noon to 2pm at Salisbury Family Hub at the school. As part of their focus on early childhood, hubs often organise for therapists like Anne and Sherry to spend time with parents and their preschool aged children in activities like playgroup.

It’s a great way for families to have access to the services they need, especially when they can spend time going on a bear hunt!

Events like this are such a great way for women in the local community to learn more about their health with a range of health specialists available to speak to on the day.

One more week until our annual 2023 Women’s Health Forum! We have many exciting things planned for you including Zumba, a petting zoo for the kids, food drinks and more! Don’t forget! Thursday the 12th of October 9.30am-2.30pm on Heights campus (32-52 Wareham Street)

One of the things that stands out in this timetable is all the terrific partners that get involved, running activities in the community hub.

So far this year, Queensland hubs have had 120 partners get involved in the activities they run. Whether that's the parenting course with QPASTT, conversational English classes with TAFE Queensland, or playgroup with Mrs Boddy - having local organisations supporting parents and their preschool-aged children makes a difference, and in many ways.

💚 OUR HUB: Check out the term 4 program at WNSS Community Hubs Australia!

One of the great things hubs do is create awareness in the community of events like these. Plus hubs get involved directly. We especially love that hub leader Leah is teaching stamped watercolour cards on the day.

Free Wellbeing Expo at the Redbank Plains Community Center, School Rd Redbank Plains next Wednesday the 11th of October. Come and join me (Leah) as I teach stamped watercolour cards. It starts at 10am and runs until 2pm. I'd love for you to join me.

It's the start of Term 4 and hubs are again running lots of activity like friendship groups, conversational English classes, and playgroups.

Pre-prep sessions at this time of year are also popular because they give parents and their children a chance to spend time in the hub (which is on school grounds), preparing for next year when the children start prep.

What better way to take that big step with the support of the school and the chance for families to meet the school principal and teachers well ahead of time.

Last week the Hon. Gabrielle Williams MP, Member for Dandenong, visited the playgroup and English class at the St Anthony’s School community hub in Noble Park, Victoria.

While it was freezing outside – a chilly 11 degrees! – the warmth inside the room made up for it, as families came together to connect, share and learn.
