Our sweet gal Dolly has been adopted 🎉

Dolly came to us in March this year, after being surrendered to a local shelter, where she was petrified of handling and too scared to leave her pen 😢

Thanks to lots of love and patience from her foster carer, and regular cooperative care sessions with our team at , Dolly's confidence grew 🙌 She showed us her silly side and her love for toys 🧸

Dolly has been settling in wonderfully to her forever home and continues to make progress with her confidence 🥰 Her adopter shared with us:

"I absolutely love Dolly! She is an adorable bundle of joy, and her presence brings immeasurable happiness to my life. I love the way she uses her little paws to rub her face; she looks just like a little bear cub. She always wants cuddles, and of course, she gets them on call. She has four favourite sleeping spots, and our bed makes five! Dolly loves sleeping on her back, and once she's relaxed, she'll roll over, exposing her tummy in hopes of a tummy rub.

Dolly and I felt at home with each other from day one. It feels like I've had her for months, not just weeks. I look forward to sharing a lifetime with her! I feel very fortunate to have her as my (fur)baby." 💗🥹

Congratulations Dolly 🥳

It’s only been 9 days since we rescued Nancy from the pound, and so much has already happened to help ease her discomfort and investigate her symptoms.

She’s had three short grooming sessions to carefully remove her matted fur, two medicated baths to treat her infected skin, and three vet visits 🩺

We’ve managed to get on top of her itchy skin thanks to some anti-itch tablets and the medicated baths. Her ear infection is clearing up, and we’re hopeful it will be completely resolved by next week🤞

Early last week, we ran a urine test and multiple blood tests to ensure there were no underlying issues before putting her under anaesthetic. Thankfully, the tests came back clear, and we were feeling optimistic about her future 🙏

Unfortunately, Nancy began to show some breathing difficulties, so we requested X-rays of her chest before proceeding with her des*xing procedure (which was due to happen yesterday) 🩻

The X-rays revealed that Nancy may have a collapsing trachea (a condition where the cartilage that holds the airway open during breathing becomes weakened) and a potential enlarged heart. Additionally, the incredibly diligent team at Thornbury Vet noticed Nancy’s pale gums and ran another blood test, which showed she was anemic, though the cause is unknown 🩸

With all this new information, we decided not to proceed with Nancy’s des*xing. Instead, Nancy will need to have an ultrasound and echocardiogram performed by an internal medicine vet later this week. These tests are estimated to cost a further $1,000.

We’re hoping these tests will give us more answers and that whatever is found can be treated and managed so that Nancy can get her happily ever after 🩵🐾

Happy 🐶🩵

Here’s just some of the pups you’ve helped us save in recent years! These dogs remind us the importance of second chances, and inspire us with their resilience and endless capacity for love. They’ve all overcome unique challenges and we are so lucky to be a part of their journeys.

We couldn’t do what we do without your support, so from the bottom of our hearts, thank you 🫶

Make sure to give your dog some extra attention today, and maybe even a special treat 😋 Here’s to all the dogs out there - thank you for bringing so much joy into our world! 🥰🐾

courtesy of all of you who have made donations towards Nancy’s vet care 🥰.

We’ve had a couple of extra generous donations from the kind souls at SavourLife and a lovely follower by the name of Dana which has ticked us over our fundraising goal 🥹.

This has enabled us to schedule in Nancy for des*xing on Monday and also have some additional tests and procedures done at the same time including X-rays of her chest (she’s had some breathing difficulties), lump testing/removal and a recheck of her ears.

She also had her second medicated bath this week and we were able to groom off more of her matted fur. She’s been feeling SO MUCH better since and has been rocking some donated Darren and Phillip jumpers to keep her warm while her hair grows back.

It really does “take a village” and don’t we know how lucky we are to have a good one around us! Thank you all 🙏🩵

It’s been 48 hours since Nancy arrived into foster care and she’s been settling in extremely well all things considered.

Her skin and ears are currently causing her the most discomfort. She arrived with infected/painful ears, matted fur and based on the condition of skin it’s likely she’s been suffering from skin infections for many years 😢

After a groom to remove the matted fur and a bath the relieve some of the irritation, Nancy had a very long and peaceful sleep. No doubt catching up on all that lost sleep whilst being in the pound 💤

The following day she went in to see Dr Thulz and nurse Kate at where she was dispensed some medications to help with her skin, ears and any other pain she may be experiencing 💊

They also noted her to painful, infected teeth as well as some lumps and bumps. Of most concern is some masses near her mammary glands.

Nancy isn’t des*xed and is estimated to be between 8-10 years of age so the next steps from here is to await her pathology results and then plan for how next to proceed with her procedures.

You can contribute towards Nancy’s vet care through the link on this post or via our website.

Thank you for making Nancy’s rescue and ongoing care possible 🩵

Mistletoe and the cardboard box, a series 😹

With her gentle spirit and endearing charm, Missy is the epitome of a cozy companion, perfect for anyone in search of a loving feline friend. From the moment you meet her, you’ll be enchanted by her sweet nature.

Missy is a master of relaxation, often found curled up on the couch or her little treehouse. She adores leisurely afternoons spent lounging by your side, but is also content doing her own thing.

Missy greets the day with a request for some morning affection and attention. She thrives on scratches behind the ears and her favourite time of the day is scratches with her brush.

Don’t let her tranquil facade fool you though, Missy has a playful side just waiting to be unleashed! By the evening, she transforms into a whirlwind of energy, dashing around the room with enthusiasm. She’ll entertain you with her adorable antics and playful sounds as she indulges in her nightly zoomies.

If you’re yearning for a feline friend who embodies both serenity and playfulness, look no further than Missy. With her gentle soul and unwavering devotion, she’s ready to bring calm and companionship into your life.

We might not know her name, her age or her story but we do know that she needs the support of the PUR community now more than ever 🫶

She spends her time curled up at the back of her pound cage, her spirit fading with every moment. As you read this, she’s probably huddled up in that same lonely spot 💔

What she doesn’t realise is that she has a whole army of PUR supporters, just like you and I, advocating for her freedom and a brighter future.

We’re ready and waiting to race back to that pound, wrap her helpless, fragile little body up in our arms and rewrite her history.

But all of that depends on one simple thing - securing a suitable foster home.

Will you help her?

We need to find her a calm and peaceful foster home, ideally without any other pets or young children (under 12) - though a small and gentle older dog may be suitable.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Her foster home will need be within Metro Melbourne and her carers willing and able to drive to our vets in Coburg and Prahran - we suspect they’ll be a number of appointments ❤️‍🩹

It’s time to flip over your PUR calendar to the month of August, where we celebrate our big red dog, Brucey 🐶

Bruce’s rescue story is one that made a huge impact on our founder, Eva.

“Bruce was a long term patient at the veterinary clinic I was working at, at the time. We hadn’t seen him for a couple of years and when I came into the clinic on that cold, rainy day in August of 2016, I was shocked to see he was booked in for euthanasia.

“When he came through the doors - I was immediately concerned. He was skin and bones, had lacerations on his body and a foul odour that filled the room. The clients didn’t give much away but said that Bruce wasn’t eating and that he needed to be put to sleep. But when I offered Bruce food, he ate it with much enthusiasm, so it wasn’t adding up for me.

“Upon further questioning, the clients admitted that they had been neglecting Bruce and no longer wanted him around their home as they now have grandchildren. After much discussion, I was able to convince the clients to surrender Bruce to PUR. It was a very difficult conversation to have but I knew that even if we declined to euthanise Bruce, they’d just go to another clinic and get it done, so my only choice was to help these people understand that giving Bruce an opportunity at a good life was the right thing to do.“ Eva says.

Bruce went on to live a wonderfully happy and fulfilling 6+ years with his doting pawrents who gave him the absolute world and then some.

“Our favourite memories are of him chasing waves on the beach. He was facinated from his first visit - so we tried to take him as often as we could. Once he started galloping backwards and forwards along the shore, there was nothing that could distract him. That’s where we like to think he is now.. chasing all the waves and butterflies”

Run free Brucey boy 🦋 🌊

Thank you to and for providing us with the opportunity to remember Bruce and celebrate his life through our calendar 🌈

Welcoming our newest kitty cat to PUR, Fergus 😻

At 9 months of age, Fergus was picked up as a stray and taken to the local pound where he spent the next month.

He’s a little shy, so bringing him into our foster program means he’ll have more time and space to come out of his shell without the pressure of the pound environment.

Fergus isn’t yet ready for adoption, but keep your eyes peeled - it won’t be too long until the fluffy bear is ready for his forever home 🏡

Look at this adorable do**us 🥹

Poor Barney has been having a hard time with itchy skin and paws so he’ll have a visit at the vets later in the week for an anti-itch injection to see if that can provide him some relief 🙏

Shakes and Fletch have filled our hearts with so much love and joy!”

Happy 12th Birthday to our brave, sassy, cuddle monster, Barb 🩷 🎉

This is the 3rd(!) birthday Barb has celebrated with us and her foster parents since being rescued after being abandoned and left to fend for herself in a back yard.

It’s our absolute pleasure to be a part of Barb’s golden years. We’re making sure her medical needs are taken care of so she’s happy and comfy, while her foster pawrents continue to provide her with lots of fun and fulfilling experiences 😍

Hands up if you agree that senior pets are truly the best 🙋‍♀️🙋🙋‍♂️

Look who we saw for a cooperative care training session... It’s Willa! 😍

Willa was rescued back in April 2021 after being found under a house as a baby puppy, emaciated, petrified and huddled up with her 2 litter mates 😢

Due to such severe malnutrition as a puppy, Willa’s body didn’t grow as it should. Her legs bowed and her knees became unstable leading to her rupturing her cruciates. She required specialist TPLO surgery to repair them which you helped us pay for and have performed in early 2022.

Willa is living her best life now, running freely and moving without the discomfort she once had 🐾

With her rough start to life, she’s got some fears and anxieties she’s still working through. One of these is vet handling and equipment 🩺

So together, with her pawrents and the team, we’re working towards helping Willa to feel more comfortable, confident and in control. You got this Willa 💪

Bet you haven’t seen a glow up quite like Dolly’s 💁‍♀️

All jokes aside, Dolly was in an absolute state when she arrived at the pound. The neglect and abuse hard to fathom 😔

Dolly couldn’t be touched. She would cower in fear at the sound of a light flicking on or off. She didn’t play or cuddle. She was withdrawn and shutdown 💔

But in the almost 4 months she’s been in our foster program, she has made such incredible progress with her handling confidence 👏

We’ve completed 8 cooperative care sessions for her now and each time Dolly defies our expectations.

Proving that anything is possible when you provide a trusting and nurturing environment 💗

Keep making us proud Dolly, you’re a star 🌟

Our Story

Project Underdog Rescue is a not for profit animal rescue charity located in Melbourne, Australia. Our organisation is run entirely by unpaid volunteers who are dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and successfully rehoming companion animals facing imminent euthanasia in pounds and shelters. We do not discriminate on breed, age or s*x. We take those that need us most.

We pride ourselves on providing our animals with the same amount of love, attention and level of care we would give our own pets. Any specialised treatment recommended by our veterinarian will be provided to the animals in our care.

We are based in Melbourne and are run via a network of foster carers. We do not have a shelter as we prefer to have our animals in loving foster homes. This allows them greater interaction with people and can encourage healthy socialisation with other domestic pets. It also gives us the chance to learn about each animals personality and provide him or her with any necessary training. We believe this gives our animals the best chance at a smooth transition into their forever home.

We are registered with the Australian Charities and Not-For-Profits Commission and have Deductible Gift Recipient status (DGR). This means that all donations over $2 are tax deductible. We are run entirely by unpaid volunteers and receive no government funding so your donations are what we rely on.

Our Mission: Rescuing, rehabilitating and successfully rehoming companion animals in need.

Our Vision: For there to one day be a world where there are no more homeless pets.

Our Values:
Kindness: To demonstrate compassion for all living creatures and treat those how we wish to be treated.
Respect: To communicate honestly and courteously in all our dealings.
Integrity: To be fair and ethical in all our dealings.
Leadership: To lead by example.
Transparency: To be open and honest in all our dealings.
Authenticity: To do what we say we do.

Our Purpose:
- To provide refuge for stray, abandoned and surrendered animals – primarily those facing imminent euthanasia in shelters and pounds.

- To rehabilitate each animal in foster care and find them loving, safe and permanent homes.

- To promote responsible pet ownership, animal welfare and no kill solutions.
