Achilles Troubles? Let's Address Them!

Achilles tendinopathy is a prevalent overuse injury that impacts runners, walkers, and anyone who spends a lot of time on their feet. This condition affects the Achilles tendon, which links your calf muscles to your heel bone, and can cause pain, stiffness, and swelling at the back of your ankle ๐Ÿฆถ

It occurs due to repetitive and excessive strain on the tendon, leading to structural changes. Factors such as training intensity, running surfaces, and footwear can elevate your risk ๐Ÿ‘Ÿ

Ignoring the symptoms and continuing to push through the pain can significantly prolong your recovery ๐Ÿฅด

World MS Day, observed on May 30th, is a global awareness event dedicated to everyone impacted by multiple sclerosis (MS).

Living with multiple sclerosis (MS) can be challenging, as it affects individuals differently and there's no known cure. However, there are ways to manage symptoms and improve quality of life. Physiotherapy is one such option, offering relief and support for those with MS ๐Ÿ™

Physiotherapy aids in pain reduction by stretching and strengthening muscles, tackling joint and muscle-related discomfort head-on. It's not just about pain relief; physiotherapy also targets fatigue, a common and debilitating aspect of MS. By gradually increasing functional capacity, individuals can combat the overwhelming exhaustion that MS brings.

Balance and coordination issues are common with MS, but physiotherapy can make everyday tasks like walking and standing easier through tailored exercises focusing on core stability. Furthermore, by building strength and muscle mass, individuals can counteract the loss of muscle function often associated with MS, improving overall mobility ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™‚๏ธ

In the journey to manage MS, physiotherapy stands as a vital component alongside medication and lifestyle adjustments. If you're living with MS, consider discussing the benefits of physiotherapy with your healthcare provider to see how it can complement your treatment plan and improve your quality of life โœจ

Pain from Footy Training? You're Not Alone!

Groin pain is a common issue for athletes in kicking sports like AFL, as the abductor muscles and tendons endure significant strain ๐Ÿฆต

If you experience pain or weakness around the p***c, groin, or lower abdominal area, it's crucial to get it checked out immediately.

Groin injuries can persist throughout the season and won't improve without proper treatment. Ignoring the pain and continuing to play can worsen the injury and prolong recovery time ๐Ÿ‘Ž

Early assessment and appropriate treatment can prevent the injury from getting worse and keep your season on track ๐Ÿ‘Œ

Did you know the brain and the gut continuously talk to each other? ๐Ÿง

Our gut sends metabolites and neurotransmitters or โ€˜chemical messengersโ€™ such as dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin that travel through the vagus nerve directly to the brain. These chemical messengers are largely responsible for influencing our mood, appetite, sleep and behaviour.

Interestingly, one might think that the majority of the bodyโ€™s serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine is produced in the brain, however, they are produced primarily in the gut ๐Ÿค”

When we have a disrupted gut microbiome or โ€˜gut dysbiosisโ€™, this can influence the amount of neurotransmitters sent to our brain and can have a negative impact on our mental health, including increased stress, depression, anxiety, low mood and lack of motivation.

Looking after the health of our gut is therefore vital for improving our mental well-being. This may include a variety of behaviour changes such as adopting a higher plant-based diet which includes plenty of prebiotics foods which help promote the growth of good bacteria, avoiding the overuse of antibiotics and adding probiotics ๐Ÿฅฌ

In turn, our brain sends chemical messengers to our gut where they can influence our gut motility and digestion, contractions, secretions (of water, mucous, enzymes) and microbial balance.

You may have noticed your brain โ€˜talkingโ€™ to your gut when you have been stressed about an upcoming deadline at work and had an upset gut/diarrhea or felt anxious about public speaking and experienced butterflies in your stomach ๐Ÿซค

Experiencing these feelings for short periods of time is normal, however ongoing chronic episodes of depression, anxiety and stress can have a negative impact on your gut function and microbial diversity.

Looking after our mental well-being is vital for improving our gut health. Consider ways you can reduce stress in your life such as incorporating mindfulness, meditation, exercise and seeking professional help when needed ๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™€๏ธ

To learn more about how to optimise your Gut-Brain Connection, book an appointment with a PPN Dietitian at Langwarrin Sports Medicine Centre โžก๏ธ https://www.healthandnutrition.com.au/contact/

When we hear someone say, โ€˜When I get out of bed, the first ten steps are agony,โ€™ and they point to the inside of their heel, it's likely they have heel spurs or plantar fasciitis ๐Ÿฆถ

Heel spurs can affect women in their middle age, young sportsmen, and everyone in between.

7 APRIL 2024 ยท World Health Day ๐ŸŒ

Around the world there are various threats to global health rights, including diseases, disasters, conflicts, and air pollution from fossil fuel burning.

Despite many countries recognising health as a human right, inadequate laws result in over half of the world's population lacking full access to essential health services.

For World Health Day 2024, the theme "My health, my right" aims to advocate for universal access to quality health services, education, clean air and water, nutrition, housing, working conditions, and freedom from discrimination.

Experiencing restless nights due to nocturnal leg cramps? You're certainly not alone! ๐Ÿ›Œ

Have you ever been abruptly awakened in the wee hours, finding yourself unable to sleep due to sudden pain? ๐Ÿ˜“

Nocturnal leg cramps can be quite distressing, causing painful muscle contractions primarily in the calf, and sometimes even extending to the foot muscles ๐Ÿฆถ

While some individuals encounter occasional leg cramps, others battle with them more frequently. While the exact cause is a bit of a mystery, we've identified a few culprits:

๐Ÿ’ง Imbalance in Electrolytes (such as Magnesium, Potassium, Calcium, Sodium)

Hip pain in kids can come from various sources and today we're spotlighting one culprit: Slipped Upper Femoral Epiphysis (SUFE), affecting growing adolescents ๐Ÿ“

SUFE (also known as Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis or SCFE) is when the ball at the top of the thigh bone decides to slide backward unexpectedly, causing discomfort, stiffness, and a noticeable change in walking, often with the foot turning out ๐Ÿ‘ฃ

While SUFE can sneak up suddenly after small incidents, it usually creeps in over weeks or months, sometimes without any prior injury.

Identifying SUFE early allows for proactive steps to stabilise the hip and reduce the risk of future complications, and this is where a Physiotherapist can come in handy! ๐Ÿ’งStay Cool: Avoid exercising in hot and humid conditions, take breaks to cool off, and stay hydrated with plenty of water.

๐Ÿ‘Œ Choose Wisely: Opt for moderate-intensity exercises that allow you to comfortably chat while working out.

๐Ÿ˜“ Mind Your Core: Be cautious with abdominal exercises to prevent diastasis. Listen to your body and seek advice if you notice any bulging or discomfort.

๐Ÿ’ช Pelvic Power: Strengthen those pelvic floor muscles! They're vital for bladder control and support.

โ›” Know When to Stop: Listen to your body. If you experience any unusual symptoms like bleeding, decreased baby movements, or chest pain, it's crucial to seek medical advice immediately.

Are you confusing "flat feet" with something else? Let's clear up the misconception! ๐Ÿค”

While "flat feet" is commonly used to describe a foot type, it's often wrongly associated with excessive pronation or inward rolling ๐Ÿ‘ฃ

But did you know that observing footprints after a shower isn't the most accurate way to gauge if we have pronating feet or not. Your feet play a crucial role in shock absorption and propulsion during walking, which can affect your overall biomechanics ๐Ÿฆถ
