Congratulations to the Tigers Taekwondo competitors for their performances at the ATV State Poomsae Championships last Sunday 1st September at the Cragieburn Sports Stadium.
The judging standards were set along WT-style scoring which weighted volume of movement with speed power and flow more than accuracy of movements and stances. For most of our competitors it was their first time competing at state level, as well as the first time being judged by the electronic deduction points scoring system.
Master Gary competed in both the Individual and Team events as part of his preparation for the Australian Team Selections for the World Poomsae Championships event later this month. Gary's fellow competitors were Grandmaster Robert Schembri and Master Chiang from Schembris's Taekwondo - a great example of inter-club friendship and friendly competition! Their team won uncontested Gold, and Gary won the Silver behind GM Schembri. Well done Gary! (Gary scored a very respectable 7.23 for his performance of the 5th Dan Shipjin Poomsae, only .1 of a point behind GM Schembri)
It was Juni's first time competing at state level, and although uncontested in her division scored very well to earn her Gold medal. Daelan worked really hard leading up his first state championship to score well and earn the Silver in his division.
Tilly and Lahaina competed in the same division, both scoring well against a very tough field of six other girls but unfortunately missed out on medals.
There were ten competitors in Eden's division, and she scored very well to earn the fourth place Bronze medal in only her second state championship (.001of a point behind 3rd place)! Daniel also had ten competitors in his division (unfortunately Sami was unwell and didn't compete), and although he performed and scored well Daniel missed out on a medal this time.
Raha had a big division of eleven girls but scored and performed very well to just miss out on a medal by .25 of a point!
Thanks to our parents for their support of their kids stepping up to state championship level, especially at the start of the day whilst some coaching issues were being sorted out. It was interesting to see that some of the coloured belt divisions winners had quite a lot of inaccurate movements but were very fast and flowing with large range of movements, a reflection of the difference between the World Taekwondo approach to competition poomsae and the Kukkiwon approach.
The open age black belt competitors however had a very high standard of technical accuracy as well as an impressive presentation of speed power and flow, with a number of 8+ excellent scores being achieved.
Congratulations to our team of coloured belts for stepping up onto the mats at these State Championships, and well done on your scores!

Lots of not-so subtle leg checking allowed under the current rules, and the arms-around hug-clinch is in. Glad to see little or no pushing, but a little sad to see no real big back-foot power kicks.
Another date for the diary!
*Please remember Tigers sparring competitors must undergo a qualification process in order to enter sparring state championships.
Congratulations to our Tigers students who competed at the Northern Regional Championship in Darebin yesterday!
Our 16 competitors garnered a total of 24 medals! 7 Gold, 7 Silver and 10 Bronze - well done all!
There was some fantastic performances, but what makes competition special is the resilience, focus and commitment required to just get on the mat and compete. There were numerous examples of this, but one of our students summed it up perfectly when she said she wanted "To challenge myself".
TOURNAMENT REPORT:
Tilly did really well winning Gold in pairs poomsae, Silver in teams and Bronze in individual. Toby won Silver in teams, Bronze individual and had two sparring matches to win a Bronze.
Brandon's very first competition saw him win Bronze in individual poomsae, and an uncontested gold in sparring (unfortunately there was no suitable opponent). Bruce fought two hard matches to win the Gold in sparring and a Bronze in individual poomsae.
Juni had two poomsae matches to win the Bronze, Rohan and Sohum both did very well to win Silver in their poomsae divisions.
Lahaina won the silver in individual, Gold in pairs and Silver in teams poomsae. Sami worked hard to win the Bronze in individual.
Maya had two hard fights to win Bronze in sparring, whilst Ella won Gold in both her sparring and individual poomsae divisions!
Daniel had a tough division, winning Silver in poomsae. Evie also had two hard sparring matches to win the Bronze medal.
Max won a Bronze in his individual poomsae division, and Daelan did really well winning the Gold in his poomsae division. Luka put in a great effort, winning Silver in his sparring division.
Although 7 of our students entered the high jump kick event, none were quite tall enough to win through against much taller opponents!
Out of the 24 medals Tigers students won, 20 of those medals represents two matches each. This means that this special group of Tigers Taekwondo students will be bringing back to our dojang their experiences in playing 44 matches at this tournament!
Excellent ground defence!
“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan 'Press On!' has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.”

Congratulations to Bruce from Tigers Kinglake on winning contact sparring Gold at the State Championships today at Darebin Stadium!
Bruce's first opponent had withdrawn before playing, so it was straight into the final against a very strong club. It was also the very first time ever that Bruce had used the Daedo electronic points scoring system (our club doesn't have direct access to an electronic scoring system).
Despite warming up and cooling off a couple of times and a long wait, Bruce showed a lot of patience and adaptability when suddenly he was straight into a final!
Initially both fighters were a little cautious of each other, but soon Bruce opened up in the first round with a series of pressuring roundhouse attacks to build a big lead, winning the first round convincingly. In the second round a similar game plan saw Bruce build another big points lead, despite receiving a couple of minor pushing infringements.
Congratulations again to Bruce for a convincing win, and for becoming a State Champion! 👊🔥
