St Vincent’s origins go back more than 180 years - when the first five Sisters of Charity arrived in Australia.
Since then, we’ve become the nation’s largest not-for-profit health and aged care provider, providing better and fairer care across Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.

This year, the world’s first 3D endoscopy was performed at St Vincent’s.
Associate Professor Bronte Holt, alongside a team of specialised endoscopy nurses in Melbourne, performed the first 3D Per Oral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) procedure – designed to treat achalasia, an oesophagus disorder that makes it difficult to swallow food and liquid.
“Using 3D imaging enhances the different layers of the gastrointestinal tract, as well as critical structures like the blood vessels and muscle fibres, and these details help us perform the operation with greater precision,” A/Prof Holt said.
We empower our nurses to reach their goals.
Our commitment to nursing training, upskilling, and opportunity is at the heart of St Vincent’s.
Whether it’s in specialty training, transitioning from sub-acute to acute care, post-grad courses, clinical placements or professional development – we’re ready to support you, challenge you and ensure you’re able to provide the very best care for our patients. Always.

Each year in Australia, more than 24,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer, making it the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the country.
As men’s health week kicks off today, we acknowledge the groundbreaking advances in diagnosis and treatment for prostate cancer at St Vincent’s - and the incredible work of our people like Professor Louise Emmett, Director of Theranostics and Nuclear Medicine at St Vincent's Sydney.
Professor Emmett’s work with PSMA-PET scans – a groundbreaking imaging test to detect prostate cancer – has been instrumental in developing more accurate methods of detection and treatment, picking up and targeting tumors where other types of scans may miss them.
For more than two decades, Dr Genni Newman has been treating patients with cancer.
“The nature of the relationship we have with our patients and the interactions continue to inspire me each day. I find it incredibly rewarding,” she says.
In her time at St Vincent’s Melbourne, she has extended her work within the Oncology Team to teaching, training and research.
One vital piece of advice she has for anyone considering a similar career path is “regardless of how busy you get, never lose sight of being human and kind in the way you help patients navigate their illness. It’s such an important step in guiding them on their journey.”
We had quite the surprise from a recent patient of ours, Ken and his wife Carolyn.
As a unique way of saying thank you to our caring nurses during his stay at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Werribee, Ken gifted us a hand made plaque to display on the ward.
“Bless our nurses for they have love to share, compassion to care, kindness to spare”
A wonderful gift that we all get to enjoy every day.
Andre is a firm believer that aged care is not a full stop – it's simply a new chapter in a person’s life – and should be fulfilling and enriching.
“It’s about being interactive. Life carries on, even in aged care,” say Andre Ramraj, St Vincent’s Care Admissions Coordinator.
For Andre, it’s the emphasis on community that makes this a reality. “Staff, family, and visitors all form a big family, creating a supportive environment that benefits everyone, not only residents.”
Now more than ever, we need to tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation.
Reconciliation among all Australians isn’t just something that’s “nice to have”. It’s the main game.
This May is Domestic Violence Prevention Month and we’re committed raising awareness and increasing resources to better prevent violence against women.
This year's theme is “it’s in our control to end coercive control”, shining a light on the complexity of domestic abuse and reminding us of our role in healthcare: to identify and support people experiencing abuse however they enter the healthcare system.
Adele Sheridan-Magro, Manager of Domestic and Family Violence Service in Sydney, has dedicated her career to making sure DV screening takes place across the hospital’s services.
“There should be no wrong door for a woman experiencing abuse and her receiving appropriate support from the healthcare system,” she says. “We’re pretty good at identifying when someone presents to emergency with clear physical violence – but it’s all the hidden ways that we need to keep looking for. All of the research tells us that women are more likely to disclose abuse – apart from a close friend or sister – to a medical professional, so we have to be informed and ready.”
Victoria is currently experiencing increased COVID-19 activity in the community, resulting in an increase in people being hospitalised with COVID-19. At the same time, we are seeing increasing cases of influenza and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) as we head into winter.
Our hospitals are high-risk settings, and to keep our patients safe, there may be areas where masks are required to be worn.
If you are feeling unwell, please refrain from visiting the hospital and test if you have symptoms of respiratory illness.
Let's all work together to keep our community safe and healthy this winter season.
Close to three quarters of Australians would prefer to die at home, yet only around 15% do so. Providing palliative care at home is the St Vincent’s mission in action.
Our teams have skillfully enabled end-of-life care in people’s homes – meaning they support patients, provide pain management, and create a compassionate space for them and loved ones during what can be a challenging time.
“I’ve been in palliative care for over 20 years, and when people say, ‘that must be depressing’, my answer is ‘if I was a midwife, you’d say that’s lovely’,” Tom Hoyland, Nurse Practitioner at St Vincent’s Melbourne says.
“It’s just the other end of the spectrum of life, that’s all.”
Volunteers are an essential part of the St Vincent’s family and the impact they make is immeasurable.
Across our sites and services, we have more than 1,000 volunteers who selflessly dedicate their days to making our patient and resident experience better. From helping someone find their way through the hospital, keeping patients' company, contributing to games and activities for our residents, or even bringing therapy dogs to our services – our volunteers dedicate countless hours to those in our care.
Thank you to all of our volunteers! We are grateful for you. Always.
St Vincent’s has a long history of firsts – especially in cardiac care, where our teams are recognised as world leaders.
For over a decade, our cardiologists have been treating Atrial Fibrillation – a condition where the heart’s upper chambers beat irregularly.
In 2023, Dr Will Lee helped introduce an even safer way of treating this issue in complex patients, completing the first Transseptal Puncture using radio-frequency energy in Australia, at St Vincent’s Sydney.
It’s thanks to clinicians like Dr Will, that St Vincent’s is at the forefront of medicine. Always.
Yesterday we celebrated International Nurses Day, with a special Afternoon Tea for all of our hard-working nurses 🍰☕
With custom cupcakes, decorations, gifts and celebrations galore, a very big thank-you to Bank First and Pinchapoo who together with St Vincent's Foundation - Victoria joined forces to deliver over 100 Pamper Packs to our dedicated nurses.
Containing an assortment of health and beauty products, the packs were very well-received by our nursing team, most of whom, after spending their days providing such dedicated and compassionate care to others, assured us they would certainly be putting their goodies to good use, with some very well-deserved R&R! 😌
A lovely way to spend the afternoon, we again say a very big thank-you to all of our nursing teams and hope you all had a great International Nurses Day 👏💜
In a world where healthcare challenges are always evolving, nurses like Catalina adapt their knowledge and skills to care for patients. Whether it’s infection prevention, clinical care, mental health or beyond – their impact reaches beyond the hospital walls, often echoing into the community.
Catalina Bahamon Rivera is a Clinical Nurse Specialist at St Vincent’s in Sydney - her expertise in infection prevention informs the way our hospital keeps patients safe.

Across our two major public health networks in Melbourne and Sydney, around one-in-five patients and one-in-three of all patient interactions relate to a person who is experiencing disadvantage. The St Vincent’s commitment to serving and supporting marginalised people and communities goes beyond our health and aged care services and extends into the research environment.
Associate Professor Vijaya Sundararajan and her team are engaged in research across St Vincent’s, providing us with the evidence-base to advocate for better and fairer care for vulnerable Australians.
ACL injuries can vary in levels of severity, from a low grade sprain to a full rupture, both common injuries especially for athletes. A/Prof Siva Chandrasekaran sheds some light on recovery options for each level of injury.
Did you know that St Vincent’s Private Hospital Melbourne is now offering self-funded ACL surgery packages for non-insured patients wanting to avoid public hospital waiting periods while also receiving the advantages of private hospital care? To find out more visit: https://brnw.ch/21wJnGp
Across the country, St Vincent’s nurses provide compassionate care for people at the end of their lives.
Whether at the bedside or in the home, our specialist community nurses enable people to choose where and how they receive their treatment.
Wendy Goremusandu is one of those Community Specialist Nurses, providing palliative care to people in their homes in Brisbane.
John Bissett is our Indigenous Physiotherapist at Sydney Public, helping patients regain their confidence one step at a time.
“I have been involved with a chronically ill patient for a long time, who had a neurological disease. I saw them for roughly 2 - 3 months, twice daily, to assist them with day-to-day needs. This person stood up for the first time about a month ago and seeing it firsthand, and then showing the family and seeing how hopeful they were, was extremely worthwhile. It made me appreciate the team I work with, the support they provide, and how we all work so hard together to make sure everyone is given their best shot.”
Hundreds of St Vincent’s clinicians and team members served our country during wartime. Some made the ultimate sacrifice.
As Australia pauses today to remember our ANZACs, we ask you to keep those brave former St Vincent’s colleagues, our patients and our fellow Australians – who served and died in the care and protection of others in your mind.
Lest we forget.
St Vincent’s Virtual & Home service provides a diverse range of health and aged care services across NSW, Victoria, Queensland, and nationally with a focus on acute, rehabilitation, palliative care, virtual and community care.

Marita Bautista is one of our at-home aged care nurses, whose love of community drives her everyday work.
“For me, nursing is a calling – and it's a joy for me to serve these people.”
