Sarah is one of the many champions whose voice helped get Enhertu listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.

“None of this would have happened without BCNA’s help,” she says. “I was just one little person, trying to get my voice out. But they gave my voice power. That’s what changed things. When I was ready to quit, they empowered me to keep going. And they got this drug on the Access Scheme so much quicker.”

Thank you, Sarah, for your courage and support. You’re our hero!

Enhertu announcement- BCNA CEO Kirsten Pilatti 28/08/2024

As you can see from BCNA CEO, Kirsten Pilatti’s reaction to Enhertu being added to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, we are still very excited about this news. This is truly a transformational treatment option for people diagnosed with HER2-low metastatic breast cancer.

Amazing news, everyone – as of 1 September, life-prolonging drug Enhertu will officially be part of the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme for people living with HER2-low metastatic breast cancer!

This targeted therapy could transform treatment for people living with metastatic breast cancer, who would previously pay $10,000 to $15,000 every 3 weeks privately for the treatment.

BCNA supporter, Sarah knows firsthand the impact of this news: “The financial burden of Enhertu drained my life savings, and the fear of what would happen when the money ran out was overwhelming. I'm deeply relieved that Enhertu is now on the PBS, ensuring that no one else has to endure the same financial and emotional strain that I did.”

While August signals the last month of winter and we start looking forward to warmer weather, Immunisation Awareness Month reminds us that we still need to play our part in keeping safe.

COVID-19 still poses a considerable risk to those who are immunocompromised, which includes those receiving active treatment for cancer.

Speak to your doctor about whether you are due for a booster COVID-19 vaccination and consider wearing a high-quality and well-fitted mask to protect yourself and others.

If you are receiving treatment for breast cancer, it's important to make a plan with your treating team should you test positive for COVID-19. This could include receiving antivirals if you are eligible, to help you recover.

Everyone has a part to play in keeping those who are vulnerable safe, and in ensuring our health systems can continue to deliver care to those who need it.

This year BCNA CRs provided the consumer voice in three of 19 National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) funded research projects.

Breast cancer researchers have again asked our CRs to provide the consumer voice in their applications for the next round of NBCF grants to be announced in 2025.

Our history

In 1998, Lyn Swinburne envisaged an organisation that would positively influence the way breast cancer was considered in the community. Her goal was for people to talk openly about the disease and acknowledge its enormous personal impact.

Following a public meeting in every state and territory, over 300 women came together to discuss issues affecting people with breast cancer. An action plan was developed and formed the inaugural Making a Difference report. The official launch of BCNA took place following this conference, at the inaugural Field of Women, a visual display of breast cancer statistics on the lawns of Parliament House in Canberra.

Lyn retired as CEO of BCNA in November 2011. Our current CEO is Kirsten Pilatti.

BCNA continues to work towards helping people affected by breast cancer access the best information, treatment, care and support.
