While the essence for this year's Boekeman Machinery | Case IH Bike it to Ballidu Gravel festival remains the same, we've tweaked a few things to improve the rider experience.

"We've worked hard to find gravel roads, trails and tracks that remove some of the boggy/thorny sections that were there last year,” said WestCycle Event Manager, Sam Maguire.

This should please those seeking a solid gravel grind on the longer 82km and 161km rides. 2023's fastest Wongan Thrills riders Cassia Boglio and Ricky Andrews will return in 2024 to take on all challengers!

"We’ve also refigured those routes so they don’t go through the 12km loop where a lot of families and less experienced riders will be – again maximising the pure gravel experience for those signing up for that," Sam said.

"Just reconning potential routes really drives home how much of a gravel haven the Shire of Wongan-Ballidu is, with the variety in gravel types setting it apart from a lot of other places in the State.”

He added: “Our shorter 46km and 12km loops will cater for riders and e-bike riders of all abilities and ages seeking different kinds of challenges, with the 12km loop in particular featuring novelty challenges, with fancy dress encouraged.

"There’ll be loads of prizes up for grabs for teams and individuals who make their mark in looks or performance – or both!”

Great to see Nannup Ngoolark MTB Jump Park officially open yesterday (19 June) to add another notch in Nannup's burgeoning mountain bike network.

WestCycle CEO Wayne Bradshaw and Mountain Bike Manager Marg McIlroy were there as the red tape was cut - along with Shire of Nannup president Tony Dean and other dignitaries, local mountain bike clubs and community members.

Ngoolark, designed by Three Chillies Design, converted a disused motor cross track and features blue and black-rated runs - and complements existing trails in the area.

"With the growth of gravel and MTB options in the area, the wild success of events like Seven and the World Gravel Championships coming to Nannup in 2026, it's a really exciting time for offroad riding in the area," said Bradshaw. "It can't be too long before Nannup joins the likes of Dwellingup and Collie in achieving Trail Town status."

Ngoolark is situated on Wadandi and Bibbulmun land and is the clan name for the White-tailed Black cockatoo.

The project is federally funded through the Regional Recovery Partnership Program and has benefitted from support from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, DLGSC South West, Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development and Nannup MTB Club.

All riders MTB bikes (no less than 15 years old) and appropriate riding gear (helmet, shoes, gloves, wet weather cycle clothing).

Munda Biddi Dreaming: how quickly can one man ride the world's longest bike trail?

"Without a doubt, the hardest most gruelling event I have ever undertaken. Record heatwaves, 80km/hr winds, this project saw me dig deeper then ever before…"

On November 24, 2023, while many of us sweltered through 40°C heat, hoping for the Fremantle Doctor to arrive, Jack Thompson was about to embark on his toughest and most gruelling challenge yet: breaking the record for the fastest Munda Biddi end-to-end ride.

The 1,067km Munda Biddi is the longest of its kind in the world, with endless miles of dirt broken up by a few towns and plenty of kangaroos, emus, snakes, spiders...and the odd inquisitive magpie!

Jack's goal was not only to break the fastest known time but also to share the power of dreaming and the importance of exercise on mental health. Following his record-breaking attempt, Jack visited roughly 5,000 school children in the Southwest to inspire and educate them.

WestCycle was fortunate enough to join Jack on this incredible journey, and now you can too when 'Munda Biddi Dreaming // An Ultra Cycling Record Film' drops on YouTube on 3 June.

Oh, and did we mention he broke the record on only 17 minutes of sleep? 😳 We struggle with just seven hours a day!

WestCycle Mountain Bike manager Marg McIlroy attended the recent WA Trails Forum that gathered industry stakeholders and community members to pick over trail developments and plans.

Marg relayed: "We heard from David Wilson (Main Roads Western Australia) and the Kirsty Havelberg (Tonkin Gap Project) about the innovative use of the land 'Under the Highway' to create the recently opened all-weather, Moorloo Beeloo Bridge BMX/Mountain Bike facility."

"Melinda Prinsloo provided an insight to the Shire of Chittering’s journey after 'buying the Hill' and delved into the small community's approach to the development of the Bindoon Mountain Bike Park."

"Scott Dysdale, Deputy Chair, Trails WA announced the crowning of Collie and Dwellingup as WA’s Premier Trail Towns. This represents a significant achievement, acknowledging the transformation of both towns into vibrant trail destinations."

Presentations on the day covered the likes of volunteering, trail tourism, industry support programs, the RiverPark Trail Master Plan and camping models.

Premier Roger Cook, Transport Minister and Deputy Premier Rita Saffioti and Environment Minister Reece Whitby today announced a $165 million 'outdoor adventure' investment package over the next four years, including $45m on MTB facilities.

The package features a $17.5m, 110km expansion of the Wadandi Track...When complete, Wadandi will be one of the longest biking/hiking trails in the country...

"We advocated for the Wadandi extension so it's great to see this investment going ahead," said WestCycle CEO Wayne Bradshaw. "It'll be a fantastic addition to WA's trails network along with the other initiatives announced today."

Other MTB investments announced included:

🚵‍♀️ $8m for Peel regional trails
🚵‍♀️ $3.5m for the Kwinana loop trail
🚵‍♀️ $3m for Kalamunda Circuit Trail (Stages 1-3)
🚵‍♀️ $2.5m for Red Gorge hike and cycle trail in Karijini in the Pilbara

🏕️ Camping grounds across the state have also been allocated $17.5m for upgrades and new sites.

Did you know the Munda Biddi Trail is the world’s longest continuous bike route?
Translating to 'path through the forest' Munda Biddi is taken from the indigenous Noongar language that’s spoken in WA’s Southwest.

1,067km of off-road adventure cycling trail like no other and Ultra Cyclist is back in Perth to embark upon a world record attempt - a perpetual ride against “a clock that never stops” along this incredible terrain.
(Current record - 1051km - 2 days, 17 hours & 22 minutes)

Starting in the Perth Hills, the Munda Biddi Trail traverses the scenic Darling scarp and the northern Jarrah forests, before heading deep into the Southern Forest region, winding its way through towering Karri and Tingle forests, over granite outcrops, and crossing ancient rivers and inlets to the historic southern coastal hamlet of Albany.
South-West WA is recognised as a global biodiversity hotspot with unique endemic flora and fauna that is just incredible!
There are very few places in the world where a trail of this length could be built in a relatively undeveloped natural corridor.
The Trail is made up of sections of rail-trail, single track, forest and farmland roads.
It provides a variety of adventure cycling experiences and challenges - with sections appealing to beginners and experienced “bikepackers” alike – choose to ride for a day, overnight or plan an epic End-to-End.
The Trail is suitable to a variety of off-road bikes - mountain, touring and gravel and there are many accessible points and road crossings that accommodate supported rides & easy drop offs, allowing you to plan your own unique adventure. Jack is attempting to secure a world record, cycling 1067km “against the clock” on the Munda Biddi Trail to raise awareness of the importance of mental health.

Urban Mountain Bike Trail development is in high demand and the value they bring to the community are well documented. By providing access to trails close to home and removing the transport barrier local governments provide safe places for our young people to participate in mountain biking.

The City of Belmont, WA is currently exploring opportunities to enhance the trail network at Garvey Park, Ascot. Common Ground Trails have been engaged to prepare a Trail Development Plan to deliver a well-planned and designed network that protects the Park’s natural assets while meeting the needs of the community.
