Walk like you're late!🚶‍♀️🏃

The sun is out and it's a great chance to get some steps! How many steps are you aiming for today?

Sometimes it's hard to find the motivation to exercise, and that's normal. A helpful tip to get moving is to start small.

Just start with a 5 minute walk. After 5 minutes chances are you'll feel like doing a little more. And if you don't, that's ok... 5 minutes will still boost your circulation, release some endorphins (feel-good chemicals) and add steps to your daily tally... every step you take is a win.💪

If pain or injury is holding you back or making walking difficult; Chris, Ross, Emily and Shauna are all here to help. Call 9200 3922 or book online via www.sssp.com.au to take a step towards better health today.

They also offer casual court hire, so you can play socially with your friends and family.

If you've been meaning to get into some sort of sport, give AH Sport a try! It's fun and social and there's bound to be one that suits you! ⚽️🏀

Thank you for continuing to wear your face masks at SSSP.😷✅

👉Here is a simple exercise to improve your posture and strengthen your upper back.

🧍‍♂️Stand up tall, squeeze your shoulder blades together, keep your elbows tucked in by your sides and pull the Theraband apart. Start with 10 repetitions, adjusting the tension on the band as necessary. You should feel the muscles between your shoulder blades working while you perform the exercise.

Emily found the perfect opportunity to do her VMO lunge exercise over the weekend...

If you have ever visited SSSP with knee pain, chances are you're familiar with our favourite VMO exercise.

The "Vastus Medialis Oblique" (VMO) is a muscle on the inside of your thigh. A strong VMO muscle is essential to healthy knees, but it can often become weak when there is swelling and pain around the knee joint. This can cause biomechanical imbalances, so it must be addressed in rehab from most knee injuries.

The VMO lunge exercise is an advanced strengthening exercise targeting the inside of your thigh. To perform the exercise, begin in a step-stance position, with your toes pointing to the 1 o'clock position (to strengthen your right VMO). Lunge your knee forwards to the 12 o'clock position and hold for several seconds. Your left hand should be positioned over your VMO muscle to prevent your hips twisting, and you should be able to feel the muscle tightening as you lunge. The goal is to be able to perform 20 repetitions, but start with a smaller amount and increase your repetitions gradually.

Give us a visit at SSSP to find out if this may be a good exercise to add to your routine.

It's World Health Day!
World Health Day is celebrated annually and each year draws attention to a specific health topic or concern to people all over the world. The date 7 April marks the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 1948.

This year, we celebrate "our planet, our health" and focus our attention on the need to keep both humans and the planet healthy. WHO aims to create societies focused on well-being, in every sense. 🌏🌿

How does dry needling work?

When muscles get sore, it's often because trigger points, or "knots" develop. Muscles are made up of lots of fibres, that are usually neatly arranged in parallel lines. When muscles get tight and painful, the muscle fibres become disorganised and bunch together causing trigger points. These knots are permanently in a state of "semi-contraction" i.e. the muscles are working, or switched on, when they should just be relaxed.

A dry needle is inserted into a muscular knot, which causes it to twitch - or cramp - and then allows it to fully relax. It's essentially like a (very) deep tissue massage. There are usually several trigger points which cause you grief, which is why we generally insert more than one dry needle.

There are countless ways to describe what occurs in dry needling, and several different theories as to why it works so well. This is just one simple explanation, but we hope it helps you understand dry needling a little better!

Here's the perfect reminder to keep moving!

For most of us, working 9 'til 5 at a desk is unavoidable... but following these simple tips can help keep your mind and spine healthy:

👀 Every 15 minutes, focus your eyes in the distance for a few moments.

🚶‍♂️Every 55 minutes, take a break to walk around the office.

📞 Stand up when you make a phone call.

👨‍💻 Use a standing desk if possible. The recommendation is to stand for 20 minutes and sit for 40 minutes every hour.

🧘‍♂️Our next post will show you some easy stretches for office workers.

Thanks .health.physio.sssp for this reminder to stay hydrated 💦⬇️

In this hot weather don’t forget to drink plenty of water. On average you should be drinking 1.8L of fluid daily. Your body needs water for 5 reasons:
☆ carries nutrients and oxygen to your cells in muscles, organs and skin
☆ helps maintain body temperature
☆ maintains skin hydration, and prevents dry eyes, nose and mouth
☆ protects your organs
☆ assists in healthy bladder and bowel habits

Researchers have found that walking 7,000 to 8,000 steps per day is beneficial to your health.

The "ideal" goal of 10,000 daily steps actually started as a marketing slogan in Japan in the 1960s. However, research has found that around 7,000 steps is a more achievable goal for most, and is equivalent to 10,000 steps in terms of overall health benefit.

There are plenty of gorgeous (and shaded) trails around Perth to get some steps in this week. Try to go before 8am or after 4pm to avoid the heat of the day.

Some of our favourite spots for a shady stroll are:
🔸️Herdsman Lake
🔸️Lake Claremont
🔸️Bold Park
🔸️Lake Monger
🔸️Kings Park
🔸️Hyde Park

How many steps do you aim for each day?
