Hi everyone!
The St George Obesity Surgery Team is starting a new initiative with planned walks throughout the year. As we find opportunities to exercise together, these walks are also meant to promote a healthy lifestyle while being social, enjoyable and fun! The very first one is extra special, as we are walking to also commemorate the late Dr. Ken Loi.
Our first one will be on the 18th of August at 1030am. We will be doing the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge walk all the way to Lavender Bay and back (3km in total).
Please read the flyer for more information.
This is a free event and not limited to any numbers. Feel free to bring your friends or family along if they are interested. For Registration, please contact the rooms (95878813) to express interest. We will be doing a little fund raising if you are interested with donations going out to The Chris O'Brien Lifehouse Foundation for cancer research in honour of Dr. Loi.
Hope to see you all there!
Lots of love,
The St George Obesity Surgery Team
Hi, I’m Dr Qiuye Cheng, lovely to meet you all.
I am a specialist bariatric and upper gastrointestinal surgeon. As many of our beloved patients are aware, the practice has stepped into a new era with the sad passing of Dr. Ken Loi. Ken was a highly celebrated bariatric surgeon who has touched countless lives and was universally adored. He has placed his trust in me in continuing his good work, with me now stepping into the role as lead surgeon at St. George Obesity Surgery (SGOS). Together with the established team, I will continue to uphold the highest standard of surgical care and commitment towards long term bariatric follow up that the practice is known for.
Being a modern-day surgeon involves much more than just being technically sound and knowledgeable. The pace is fast and its crucial to be continuously evolving our thinking and treatment methods. Above all, it’s about being accessible, compassionate and forever your strongest medical advocate.
I along with the whole SGOS team, look forward to being an integral part of your surgical journey. I sincerely thank each and every one of you for placing your trust in me.

To lose weight and control obesity-related health problems, some people choose to undergo weight loss surgery, also known as bariatric surgery. This alters the anatomy and physiology of the stomach. Conditions like diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, and other cardiovascular disease and stroke risk factors can be improved with weight loss surgery and positive lifestyle changes.

Many people don't give much thought to the ease with which they can get in and out of their car or tie their shoelaces. For the morbidly obese, this is not an easy task. Dr. Ken Loi discusses some of the most common things patients report following weight loss surgery in this video.
How much of your day do you spend sitting? Did you know that overweight people sit for an extra two hours a day, according to studies, compared to their normal-weight peers. To a large extent, people's workplaces and other social environments contribute to being overweight.

Reduced hunger and enhanced satiety result from weight loss surgery.
Patients are unlikely to achieve significant long-term success with their weight unless they CHANGE THEIR BEHAVIOR and adopt better behaviours.
Elevated levels of emotion (stress or anger), distractions while eating (watching television, listening to music, or speaking with friends), and poor planning and activity patterns when it comes to eating and exercise are all potential causes of poor eating habits.
Examples of behavioural change include:
-Participating in a weight loss management programme
-Implementing measures to reduce stress levels
-Adopting new eating habits for food preparation
-Participating in a weight loss management programme

The increased production of a hormone called leptin is one reason by which obesity might decrease fertility in women. Fatty tissue, especially in the midsection, is responsible for this.
For women who are obese and experiencing infertility, weight loss surgery may be an option to explore.
During the rapid weight loss phase following bariatric surgery, it is generally not advised that patients become pregnant for at least a year.

Weight loss surgery is an option for people with type 2 diabetes and excess weight.
Poorly managed diabetes is associated with an increased risk of complications affecting the eyes, kidneys, and nerves. Weight-loss surgery can be effective in treating type 2 diabetes because it reduces overall body weight and, consequently, the amount of sugar in the blood.
When it comes to weight loss surgery, our dedicated team of experts simplifies the process and strives to put you at rest every step of the way.
To speak with our knowledgeable staff, contact them on (02) 9587 8813.
Carrying excess weight puts a lot of stress and pressure on joints, especially knees. The extra weight you are carrying not only makes it more likely that you’ll develop osteoarthritis and make the disease worse if you already have it, but it also actually speeds up cartilage degeneration.
Weight loss surgery can support patients to reduce excess weight enough to significantly reduce the impact on the joints and improve or eliminate pain in those with arthritis.
Key to weight loss surgery success is personalised support before, during & after your weight loss surgery.
Contact our experienced team at (02) 9587 8813 for additional information on how to gain control of your weight.
WHY DO I NEED TO LOSE WEIGHT BEFORE WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY?
Studies have shown that weight loss on a Very Low Energy Diet (VLED) reduces the liver size and the fat surrounding the stomach. This makes the operation easier for the surgeon to perform and, therefore, SAFER for you.
Weight loss also improves your blood pressure and blood sugar control, reducing the risk of surgery. This includes reducing the risk of DVT (clots in the legs), which can travel into the lungs.
Any weight loss before the surgery is a step towards achieving your weight loss and health improvement goals.
