Year 7 Science || Taronga Zoo

Year 7 students gathered evidence to test some of the claims that Taronga Zoo make about the welfare of the animals in their care. They looked for evidence that Taronga are ensuring that their animals have appropriate nutrition and drinking water, housing that allows them to move around freely which include comfortable resting places and thermal comfort.

The students collected accurate, reliable, and valid data to confirm that the animals are able to express species-specific behaviours as they would in their natural habitats.

Stage 5 Multimedia || Nature and Landscape Photography

Stage 5 Multimedia students embarked on an exciting excursion to Little Manly, where they honed their photography skills amidst the natural beauty of this stunning location. The trip, part of their curriculum focused on nature and landscape photography, provided an immersive experience, blending learning with the breathtaking outdoors.

Students spent the afternoon exploring the coastal scenery, capturing the vibrant hues of the sea, the intricate details of native flora, and the dynamic interplay of light and shadow across the landscape. With cameras in hand and creative minds at work, they applied techniques learned in class to frame the perfect shots, experimenting with composition, exposure, and focus.

The excursion to Little Manly was a fantastic opportunity for our students to put theory into practice. Being in such a picturesque setting allowed them to develop their technical skills and artistic vision in a real-world context.

This hands-on experience not only enriched the students' understanding of photography but also fostered a deeper appreciation for the natural environment. It was a day of creativity, learning, and inspiration, leaving everyone eager for the next Multimedia adventure.

82nd Anniversary: Defence of Sydney Commemorative Service at North Head.

This week we commemorated the 82nd anniversary of the ‘Defence of Sydney’ - the night the war came to Sydney Harbour. Year 10 Students Oliver and Jackson participated in the wreath laying ceremony with the 'General The Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove, former Governor-General of Australia’ attending as a guest speaker.

On 29 May 1942 five large Japanese submarines rendezvoused some 35 nautical miles northeast of the entrance to Sydney Harbour. They commenced an attack on Naval and converted vessels in the Harbour.

At the time of the attack, Sydney Harbour defences consisted of anti-submarine indicator loops— including one on North Head.

It was wonderful to see so many people from right across our community participating.

Precinct Primary Schools’ Mathematics Extension Workshop.

We welcomed our Precinct Primary Schools to St Paul's over the past two Thursdays to participate in the Mathematics Olympiad. The event is aimed to foster a love for mathematics and to challenge the students' problem-solving abilities in a fun and stimulating environment.

The St Paul's Year 7 students played an integral role by mediating and assisting the primary students whenever needed. They provided guidance and support, helping to create a collaborative and encouraging atmosphere.

The Olympiad consisted of various challenging activities and problem-solving tasks that tested the students' mathematical skills and creativity. The primary students worked in teams to tackle a range of problems, from arithmetic puzzles to logic-based challenges. This format not only tested their mathematical prowess but also encouraged teamwork and communication skills.

The event was a great success, with both the primary and secondary students gaining valuable experiences. The primary students were enthusiastic and engaged throughout, and our Year 7 students demonstrated excellent leadership and mentoring skills.

It was wonderful to see the students from various schools and year levels coming together and sharing their passion for mathematics.

🤝 Embracing our differences, forging connections. 🤝

This week at St Paul's we are celebrating National Reconciliation Week 27 May - 3 June, 2024.

Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships.

National Reconciliation Week is this week, themed, 'Now More Than Ever', a reminder to all of us that no matter what, the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will —and must —continue. The National Reconciliation Week 2024 artwork and design represent the momentum of the theme Now More Than Ever. The chevron, a universal symbol for pointing the way, signifies advancing as one as we look towards a reconciled future; and the vibrant artwork of Gubbi Gubbi artist Maggie Douglas encourages connecting with one another, understanding and continuing to move forward. Year 12 Geography went to conduct some fieldwork at Towra Point Wetlands near Botany Bay. As a part of their investigation into ecosystems at risk, the students got a firsthand experience in how this unknown but important ecosystem has been neglected.

This was highlighted when getting to Towra beach, where waves that refract from Sydney Airport have significantly eroded the coastline, causing important freshwater lagoons to become brackish and loose the ability to be a habitat for native animals.

The students enjoyed the experience that will ultimately help them succeed in the HSC.

On Monday the Year 11 Geography class conducted fieldwork along Collaroy-Narrabeen Beach to assess the current management strategies to combat erosion, particularly during East Coast Lows (ECLs).

Students had to compile data and note down the width of various sections of the beach, assess the controversial sea wall along the beach and get a feel for the biophysical interactions that occur naturally.

The collection of their data will help provide evidence in their evaluation of the current management strategies in terms of sustainability as well as the needs of the community.
