"A powerful piece of music: imaginative, emotional, immensely virtuosic. A daring yet coherent fusion of two worlds." - Thomas Behnke, LEO - Die Rheinpfalz
Renowned Estonian pianist Kristjan Randalu is coming back to Toronto and Hamilton to showcase his newest record!
In the short time that virtuosic jazz and contemporary pianist Kristjan Randalu's latest release "Dichterliebe" has been out, it has garnered worldwide recognition for its outstanding interpretations of Robert Schumann's famed song cycle of the same name. Based on German poet Heinrich Heine’s Lyrisches Intermezzo, a collection of 65 poems first published in 1823, Dichterliebe in a way even represents the epitome of romantic poetry set to music. Since this was an incredibly modern work at the time, it's only fitting that the genre-bending Randalu is tackling this song cycle and updating its vocabulary with the language of the 21st Century.
More about Randalu: the Estonian-born pianist and composer is one of the most forward-thinking minds in today's contemporary music realm and is known for his captivating interpretations of classical and jazz pieces as well as Estonian traditional folk songs, and his refreshing and thought-provoking compositions. He "belongs to the most sought-after piano players of his generation, carrying the torch in both the improvised world of jazz and the traditional realm of classical music – Herbie Hancock has called him “a dazzling piano player”."
You have two opportunities to hear Kristjan Randalu play this fall:
👉 Oct. 3, Cotton Factory, Hamilton - 7 p.m.
👉 Oct. 6, Hugh's Room Live, Toronto - 2 p.m.
🎟️: $35/$25 students
