Marketing professor Laurence Ashworth, who has long studied consumers’ perceptions of fairness, says these feelings are often a side effect of dynamic or surge pricing. This revenue management strategy involves setting flexible prices based on current market conditions. In a recent study with Lindsay McShane of Carleton University and Peter Darke of York University, he found that feelings of unfairness can get deeply personal for consumers.

After 50 years with Smith, Professor Bill Cannon has retired.

At one time or another, Professor Cannon taught almost all of the finance courses offered to Commerce and MBA students. This past year, he taught COMM 329 - Management of Financial Institutions for the 47th year in a row!

In addition to serving on many Smith School of Business committees and as Chair of the Smith School of Business Faculty Board, Prof. Cannon also served as Chair of the Pension Committee of Queen’s Board of Trustees from 2000 through 2012, and as Chair of its investment sub-committee from 2000 to 2021. He has also been Chair of the Senate’s Ban Righ (Residences) Board and Budget Review Committees and served on the Investment Committee of the Community Foundation of Greater Kingston. For these and other contributions, he received the Queen’s University Distinguished Service Award in 2008.

Best known for his leadership of the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan, Leech was appointed President and CEO in 2007. Upon his retirement in 2014, he co-authored The Third Rail, Confronting our Pension Failures, which won the Best Canadian Business Book Award, and has dedicated his working life to voluntary philanthropic leadership and non-partisan public service.
