Family literacy is the opportunity to strengthen the relationship between children and their caregivers by learning together. This year’s theme is “Learning in the Great Outdoors!” Head outside to exercise both bodies and minds together as a family, while playing, exploring, and observing the beautiful outdoors!
Meet Pat!
Pat Wilson was Women United Regina’s very first member (!),but she has been involved with United Way Regina for two decades, as both a donor and a volunteer. Pat came to Regina from Balcarres, SK, completing her B.A. and M.A. in English Lit at the University of Regina. After having worked for the City of Regina for 30 years, Pat is now retired and has more time to spend gardening, weight training, working backstage in theatre, and of course, reading!
In addition to Women United Regina, Pat volunteers with Vello tutoring and serves on the board of the Canadian Water Network. She’s excited to be planning a trip to Kenya and Tanzania in the near future. In addition to her own two cats, Murphy and Callie, Pat usually has a few foster cats in her care.
Reading has always been a huge part of Pat’s life, and she wants everyone to have easy access to the benefits afforded by literacy, whether it’s increased opportunities for employment, the ability to access knowledge, or an escape into the wonderful new fictional world of a story. Making a difference is important to her, and she can’t imagine a better way to do that than through Women United Regina. We are so lucky to have someone so committed to making change work!
Happy New Year from Women United Regina!
If your goals for 2022 include connecting with like-minded women and contributing to real, positive change in your community, we would love for you to join us! Let’s make this year our best one yet!
Access to books and supports in the classroom are two of the goals Women United Regina is focused on. Helping children to become proficient readers by third grade opens them up to a world of possibilities, where they can read for learning, for discovery, for exploration, and for fun!
Meet Lori!
Lori Daelick is the co-chair of Women United Regina. Lori grew up in Yorkton, SK, and studied at the University of Regina, where she obtained her Masters of Education. Her career with Regina Public Schools led her to the position of elementary school principal, and more recently to the role of Supervisor of Human Resources. When she’s not working passionately to ensure students and staff are supported in Regina schools, Lori takes time to create memories with family and friends.
Lori is very much known for her motto, “we rise by lifting others,” and she lives by this in her personal and professional life. She loves working with both youth and adults to help them realize and live to their potential, and is deeply passionate about providing all youth with a successful start.
Lori is grateful to see leaders across our city pulling together to create a strategy and action plan to ensure a more literate Regina, and Women United Regina is grateful to have her!

Meet Anne!
Anne Bilczuk is the co-chair of Women United Regina. Anne grew up in a mining town in Northern Ontario and continued her education at Laurentian University, where she obtained her Honours Bachelor of Commerce with a major focus in Accounting, later adding CGA/CPA designation. After 30+ years in the financial services industry, Anne is now retired and can spend time pursuing an education in an area of passion- wine! With their grown daughter living outside of Saskatchewan, Anne and her husband do still have one little one at home- their dog, Cody.
It is Anne’s belief that we never stop learning, and she considers learning to be a lifelong mission. One of her favourite quotes comes from Nelson Mandela- “I never lose. I win or I learn.”
Women United Regina is lucky to have Anne guiding us as we strive to help young students in Regina develop into lifelong learners!

Today marks Canada’s first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, formerly known as Orange Shirt Day. Today and every day, we remember and honour the children who died while attending residential schools, as well as the survivors, families, and communities who continue to feel the effects of the legacy of the residential school system.

Today marks the beginning of Campaign for Grade Level Reading Awareness Week. Follow along as we celebrate United Way Regina’s 1st year of the Campaign for Grade Level Reading! To learn more about the goals of this impactful initiative, go to www.unitedwayregina.ca/cglr.
What can a student expect from their Summer Success Camp?
✏️ two weeks of intensive literacy activities with a low student-teacher ratio, ensuring individualized attention
🍎 nutritious snacks and meals
🥦 Good Food boxes for families
📚 books to keep to support at-home reading
🎒 a backpack filled with school supplies
💪🏽strong skills for a strong start to the upcoming school year!
Each Summer Success Camp runs at $15,000 and can happen thanks to generous contributions and memberships from people like you!
Without practice, reading skills decline. Children who are not able to engage in reading over the summer are disproportionately at risk of experiencing learning loss, often referred to as “summer slide.”
How can we help students to continue to grow their literacy skills during the summer months? One way is through United Way’s Summer Success Camps, and we are pleased to be sponsoring one of those camps for local children this summer!
We can help kids to be successful readers by creating opportunities that allow them to:
•attend school on a consistent basis
•have access to appropriate reading
material
•start kindergarten with strong
beginner academic skills
•practise their acquired skills over
the summer months when they’re
out of school
Women United Regina js dedicated to improving each of these areas for Regina kids!
Until grade 3, students learn to read. After that, they read to learn. This is why being able to read at grade level by third grade is so important!
When you support Women United Regina, you are supporting United Way’s Campaign For Grade Level Reading, which is committed to creating strong starts for Regina’s young learners so they can one day become Regina’s leaders!
Today is the first day of summer holidays for Regina elementary school students. Although summer can be a fun time, the break from schooling means most children digress in their reading levels. We at WUR are committed to helping children gain, not lose, ground over the summer months. We are excited to be sponsoring a United Way Summer Success Camp this August!

Created by , this infographic honours and remembers the 215 children who never returned home from the Kamloops Residential School. The moccasins are arranged in 7 circles to represent the 7 generations who attended residential schools here in Canada.
The inter generational impact of these schools on our communities is profound; we stand with those who are still living with the effects of this era in our history. 🧡
