Between 1914 and 1920 over 8000 people were wrongfully imprisoned in Canada during the country's first national internment operations. In 2016 Armistice Films produced a series of videos titled "The Camps," honouring the memory of these men women and children by telling their story. Written and produced by Ryan Boyko, the series of 33 vignettes was made possible with a grant from the Canadian First World War Internment Recognition Fund (today known as the WWI Internment Legacy Fund).
In the series finale, internee descendant Jerry Bayrak gives a powerful, heartfelt account of his family’s struggle, resulting from their internment in Spirit Lake. The trauma experienced by the interned and subsequent generations has influenced who we are as Ukrainians in Canada today. It is our obligation to learn, understand, and break the cycle.
October 28 is National Internment Commemoration and Education Day. Contact your local Ukrainian Canadian Congress branch (ucc.ca) to find a commemorative event in your community. Participate to help share the story.

💔💔 Lviv and Kryvyi Rih. Following a vicious attack on Poltava yesterday, Russia targeted two more major cities in Ukraine tonight.
Using missiles, Russian war criminals struck civilian infrastructure, killing 7 people in Lviv, including 2 children, and injuring over 40 others. In Kryvyi Rih, at least 5 people were injured.
Russia’s terror won’t stop until it is stopped, and there are two ways to prevent it.
First, strengthen the air shield over Ukraine with additional air defense systems and missiles.
Second, allow Ukraine to strike legitimate military targets in Russia without limitations.
Give Ukraine more ability to defend itself.
If you think the Canadian government should stop funding Russian propaganda and that Toronto Film Festival should stop screening it, please click below to see what you can do: https://www.ucc.ca/2024/09/06/why-is-canadian-taxpayer-money-being-used-to-fund-russian-propaganda/
