🎉✨ A day full of honours! We couldn't be more PROUD of our graduating Diploma students and the hard work they've put in as we celebrate their achievements and scholarship wins at our vibrant Recreation Luncheon this year. It was amazing to see all of these familiar faces together in one room! We were also delighted to showcase the innovative research projects of our BRM graduates this semester to all our esteemed guests in attendance.

We want to extend a big heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who plays an ongoing part in this wonderful and inspiring community: to our generous scholarship donors, whose support not only fuels the aspirations of our students but also strengthens the foundation of our educational programs. To our agency supervisors and advisors, your guidance and mentorship continues to be invaluable. To our passionate instructors, whose dedication to our students' growth is second to none. And to all those who support our students' journeys in ways large and small, none of this would be truly possible without you.🧡

Three legends in one photo! 🌟

Doug Perks, founder of DB Perks & Associates stands with the winner of our DB Perks & Associates Ltd. Scholarship, Leticia and Yue-Ching Cheng, Chair of our Recreation Studies Department at a recent luncheon hosted by Doug and his staff for partners of the community. 🎄

This scholarship was awarded to a full-time student enrolled in the third term of the Recreation Leadership Diploma Program. The successful candidate must have demonstrated a talent for the aquatics area of recreation, as well as genuine interest in pursuing a career in the field. The recipient must also have demonstrated attributes of a diligent self-starter who works hard to accomplish goals that benefit others. Congrats on your achievement, Leticia! 🥳

Our learners get after it 🤝 We're stoked to share the achievements of our dedicated students who have earned certifications in our Recreation Studies courses, including the RFABC Pool Operator 1 (PO1), Refrigeration Safety Awareness (RSA) and the Hi-Five Principles of Healthy Child Development certificates 🏆💧 Department Chair and Instructor Yue-Ching Cheng ensured the success of our learners every step of the way through their RFABC modules!

🏊‍♂️ RFABC Pool Operator 1 (PO1): This course is a gateway to success in swimming pool operations. From water circulation equipment to pool volume calculations, basic chlorine chemistry, and water balance, participants get an in-depth education in maintaining pools for the safety of swimmers and patrons alike. 🧪

🧊 RFABC Refrigeration Safety Awareness (RSA): This 8-hour classroom course prepares our students to write the Technical Safety BC provincial RSA exam. It's perfect for personnel working in regulated refrigeration facilities. The course covers everything from safety regulations to refrigeration system components, safety equipment, and general safety practices. 🌡

Special mention also goes out to our recent BRM graduate, Paul Radnidge, who was the instructor who led the Principles of Healthy Child Development (PHCD) workshop. PHCD is a training module that equips front-line leaders with the tools, knowledge, and resources needed to ensure the social, emotional, and cognitive needs of children participating in programs aged 4 to 12 are met. 🧒📚

We applaud the hard work and dedication of our students and the excellence of our instructors. Together, they're making a difference in the world of Recreation Studies. 🌟

🎉 Celebrating Ivan's Remarkable Journey! 🌟

We're thrilled to spotlight Ivan Nikolov, a shining example of dedication and impact of our Recreation Studies community. Ivan was recently awarded the very first offering of the Dr. Philip Tso Entrance Scholarship for his unwavering commitment to uplifting indigenous and minority communities, particularly through his role in empowering indigenous youth. The Dr. Philip Tso Entrance Scholarship was created to recognize and support mature students who have shown dedication in supporting minority and/or indigenous communities through recreation.

As a Recreation Coordinator for the ʔaq̓am Community, Ivan has not only deepened his love for his work but also played a pivotal role in nurturing the talents of young athletes. With support from the Musqueam Nation, Ivan provided crucial assistance and resources as the Head Coach of Team BC's U-16 boys soccer team, which led to remarkable accomplishments including a heart-stopping victory at the recent North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) where Team BC clinched the gold medal in a nail-biting finish against Alberta 2-1, with a winning goal in the final seconds of the game!

Ivan's journey in our Bachelor of Recreation Management program is not just about personal growth but also about making a lasting, positive impact. His efforts have opened doors and created opportunities for indigenous youth, inspiring them to strive for greatness.

Swipe to see Ivan in action and the triumphant moments of the NAIG gold medal-winning team! 🥇⚽

As active as a classroom gets! 🏹📚 Rec Studies students were recently blessed to participate in an engaging presentation by Special Guests Lamarr and Dinah on Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Traditional Games, with additional guests Leah Wong-Moon, Department Head of Athletics at David Thompson Secondary and Jessica Land, Manager of Recreation Services at the City of Vancouver also in attendance.

Originally from Sweetgrass First Nation in Saskatchewan, Lamarr Oksasikewiyin has presented on Traditional Games all over the world and introduced our students to a fascinating array of traditional games integral to their culture, illuminating not just the skills involved but the deeper teachings and learnings these activities embody. These games, rich in history and wisdom, offered valuable insights into survival techniques and the importance of social community bonding. His unique session was not only a lesson in cultural heritage, but a vibrant demonstration of how traditional practices can inform and enhance our modern understanding of recreation and community building. "Hanging out" took on new meaning recently as our students tackled a new set of challenges at the UBC Ropes Course!🌲🧗‍♂️🌲

More than just a playful adventure day, the outing was a stepping stone towards the Outward Bound excursion that followed them in the weeks ahead. As they navigated through the different trials on the course, they built confidence and forged a network of trust and collaboration.

Each knot tied and obstacle overcome sharpened their leadership and problem-solving skills, setting them up for success during their Garibaldi Provincial Park camping journey. We love to see the magic that unfolds when diverse minds and eager hearts come together to share laughs and conquer new heights! ✊

Even though Halloween is still ahead of us, it's never too early to start talking about initiatives to help the less fortunate, particularly around the holidays.

This year, our students from RECR 3200 have partnered with the Children's Organ Transplant Society to host a cheer-box donation drive.

On Saturday November 19th, come stop by the Sunset Community Centre to enjoy some snacks and consider bringing a preferred donation to help make an impact in a child's life this holiday season!

Last week, our RECR 1162 students returned home from their 5-day experiential-learning camping trip in the Garibaldi park backcountry 🏕🏞 these are just a tiny handful of the many amazing photos that were captured in that time!
-
For many students in the group, the expedition was the first time they had ever taken on a challenge of this scale. Each member carried 50-70lbs of cargo on their back, while crossing over 9km+ of beautiful mountain terrain each day as they made their way from one campsite to the next 😮‍💨🥵
It definitely wasn’t always a cake walk🎂 but the students learned to rely on each other, demonstrate leadership and overcome obstacles together (both literally and figuratively) to succeed, and came back with a new lease on life. A BIG congrats to everyone who completed OB 2022!
