What’s been going on in the School of Management

On May 10, 2024, artificial intelligence strategist Garrett Wasny delivered an insightful workshop on 'AI for Accountants.’ This workshop explored how finance professionals can harness AI tools to enhance productivity and improve decision-making.

Garrett emphasized a crucial point: 'Accountants will not be replaced by AI. Rather, accountants will be replaced by accountants who know how to work with AI. The future of accounting lies in the hands of those who can effectively leverage AI technologies to augment their expertise, streamline processes, and provide more valuable insights to clients.

It's not about AI versus accountants, but AI-empowered accountants leading the way.’ There was an active discussion on how the most successful accountants will be those who integrate AI into their workflows while leveraging uniquely human skills like critical thinking, ethical judgment, and relationship building.

Meet Ronald Wong – Accounting Instructor, Langara School of Management

Ronald is a senior instructor having taught accounting at Langara College’s School of Management for 12 years. He is a Chartered Accountant and teaches a variety of courses. Ronald brings a wealth of experience into the classroom from working for the Canadian Revenue Agency as an income tax auditor and working at KPMG as a tax manager.

This is Ronald’s seventh year coaching business students in the CPA BC Annual Business Case Competition. His philosophy centres on bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Ronald feels that with student participation in business competitions, it deepens the understanding of business and accounting principles while gaining confidence and experience in applying concepts to dynamic and complex business scenarios.

His goal is to prepare students to excel academically and to emerge from Langara College as well-rounded professionals equipped to succeed in the ever-evolving business landscape.

Meet Peter Kim!

Peter is a founding member and executive of our Consulting Club. Peter is a student in the School of Management at Langara College. He had the opportunity to participate as a research analyst for the Mayor’s Budget Task Force. We had an opportunity to talk to Peter about his experiential learning from being on this task force.

What is the most valuable thing you learned?

I have learned countless skills and lessons during my engagement as a research analyst for the Budget Task Force. From research and report writing to teamwork and leadership skills, working with established team leaders and talented colleagues provided a dynamic environment for personal and professional development. The lesson that stands out the most from my engagement was that while generating solutions based on your interpretation and analysis is important, it is equally, if not, more important to listen to the people within an organization to resurface and incorporate their perspective into the recommendation. Prior to this role, I have been part of business case competitions where I have learned that thorough analysis of the client and external environment results in an effective recommendation. Initially, I spent a lot of time and effort analyzing because I held this belief going into the role. When our team started to interview key personnel from the City of Vancouver, I realized that listening to the staffs was not only more efficient at diagnosing the critical issue, but also better at providing insights to potential solutions to the problems.

How has the work experience connected to what you learned in the classroom at Langara?

The accounting degree curriculum has contributed tremendously in terms of relevant knowledge and team environment experiences to work effectively as a member of the task force. The Budget Task Force was divided into four independent workstreams, each managing an area of opportunity to make a positive impact to the city's capital and operating budget. Among four workstreams, I was part of the Operational Excellence workstream in which the unit's primary objective is to make improvements to organizational governance, operational processes and delivery of services. Whether you're dealing with a private company or public organization, every organization is faced with the issue of improving their operations as they are constrained by limited resources. I was shocked to discover that the City of Vancouver was no exception and there were areas of opportunities that could be explored. As a third year BBA accounting student at that time, I was able to apply knowledge I've learned in business management regarding performance measurement into my research and recommendation. Furthermore, constant exposure and experience to group projects in the accounting curriculum has prepared me to manage workload and communicate effectively as a team member of the workstream.

How has this experience prepared you for your future academic and work goals?

I am so grateful that I had the privilege to be a small part of an amazing initiative led by leaders in our community in making our city a better place to live. I certainly did not expect to learn so much in such a short period of time, and it made me realize that there is an avenue of learning and growth if you challenge yourself to jump into something you know nothing about. One thing that I am certain of from this experience is that I will be radically open to opportunities around me to continuously learn from others to become a competent professional and leader in the future.

Meet our Alumnus Adrian Tong!

Adrian graduated from Langara School of Management with a BBA in Accounting. He is currently the Tax Manager at Crowe MacKay LLP, an accounting firm in downtown Vancouver, BC. Crowe MacKay is a mid-sized accounting firm that serves clients across northern and western Canada and has been in business since 1969.

What is the average day at work for you like?

“I provide tax compliance and advisory services to a wide range of corporate and individual clients. I specialize in personal and corporate tax compliance, planning and advisory, including corporate re-organizations and tax planning strategies with a focus on owner-managed and privately-held businesses.”

How did your experience at Langara shape your career path?

“I graduated with a BBA in accounting from Langara. The education I received was instrumental in giving me the foundation I needed to successfully achieve my CPA designation and complete CPA Canada’s In-Depth Tax Program.

I attribute my success to all the instructors I had the pleasure of meeting at Langara. I originally enrolled in the diploma in business management program at Langara with the intention of transferring to UBC, but changed my mind after meeting instructors who encouraged me to consider pursuing the CPA designation.

I benefited tremendously by connecting with them and learning from their wealth of experience in a smaller classroom setting, which is why I ultimately chose to graduate from Langara. I am forever grateful to them for all the knowledge and support they gave me during my time at Langara and after I graduated.

I’m certain the current Langara students, especially those that are pursuing the CPA designation, will appreciate the current and relevant knowledge and practical experience that you bring through your involvement with the CPA PEP program. I also admire that so many instructors at Langara willingly volunteer their time to coach students through case competitions, which has been instrumental in helping them secure job offers.”
