Drs. Daniel Gamu and Michael Koehle awarded 2024 NSERC Research Program Discovery Grants – Faculty of Education 08/02/2024

Congratulations to Dr. Daniel Gamu and Dr. Michael Koehle for securing 2024 Discovery Research Program Grants from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) to support their important health research.

Funds will further Dr. Gamu's project "Histone Post-Translational Modifications and Tissue Adaptability," which explores how chromatin packaging proteins regulate the ability of muscle and fat to respond to changing energy needs, including exercise and diet.

Similarly, funds will support Dr. Koehle's project, "Mechanisms of the Respiratory and Exercise Response to Ozone Air Pollution in Humans," which explores the interactions between exercise and increased air pollution, specifically how physical activity might increase the inhaled dose of pollutants and their entry into the bloodstream, potentially amplifying their harmful effects.

An Anishinaabe-kwe scholar from M’Chigeeng First Nation and professor in the Department of Language and Literacy Education, Dr. Hare has served as Dean pro tem since 2021 and holds a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Pedagogy.

Dr. Hare is deeply committed to advancing equity, diversity, inclusion and decolonization in education. Congratulations to Drs. Anusha Kassan and Hongxia Shan for securing 2023-24 SSHRC Partner Development Grants. These funds will support their important research projects, which provide insight into issues faced by immigrant communities in Canada.

Dr. Kassan's project, "Capturing Stories of Child Language Brokering: An Arts-Based Engagement Ethnography with Newcomer Families," will support deeper insights into Child Language Brokering, where newcomer parents and guardians depend on their children for linguistic translation and interpretation in various contexts.

Dr. Shan's project, "Adult Learning and Education in Immigrant Settlement and Integration (ALE-in-ISI) Partnership," will further contribute to research in this area.

Congratulations to Dr. Liv Yoon and her team, who have been awarded the New Frontiers in Research Fund: 2023 International Joint Initiative for Research in Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation for their project "Addressing Intersecting Crises: Climate, Housing, and Compounding Health Vulnerabilities for Senior Tenants."

By addressing the inequitable impacts of climate change-induced extreme events, such as heatwaves and wildfires, on indoor environments, particularly for senior, low-income, disabled, and racialized tenants in coastal cities, Dr. Yoon's team aims to enhance livability and health without displacing or disempowering vulnerable populations.
