QUB Philosophy Society

Hi everyone!

Next week at PhilSoc, we will be meeting in the Light Room of the SU Building to discuss the theme of cults*! We have a few questions prepared to guide the discussion, but we would recommend doing some light reading on infamous cults such as the Manson family, NXIIM, Jonestown, and the existence of the Cult of Personality in the political sphere.

This is our last discussion of the academic year! 😢 As circulated by email, the committee apologises for the cancelled discussion this week. Details for our AGM will be posted later this week. We hope to see you there on the 18th, followed by a trip to Lavery’s afterwards!

* The Philosophy Society does not promote the existence or creation of cults, especially becoming the leader of one.

This Thursday at PhilSoc we will be discussing the topic of uncontactable tribes (think North Sentinel Island) and whether we should contact them for moral, political, and religious reasons.

Parameters of the discussion will be outlined at the start of the meeting - as always, no prior research is required but it is always welcome!

This week at PhilSoc (Tuesday 5th March), we will be hosting Dr Rebecca Bamford of the QUB Philosophy Department as our guest speaker!

In recognition of International Women’s Day the talk will discuss issues of diversity in philosophy from academic, professional, and personal perspectives.

We will be meeting in the Drawing Room of the Student’s Union at 7pm, followed by drinks after. We hope to see you all there!

Our 2024/25 committee elections will be taking place from 9am on the 4th until 4pm on the 7th of March! Nominations are now open, and will close at 4pm on Friday 1st of March. You must be a society member in order to vote.

This week at PhilSoc we’ll be exploring the ethics of smoking and va**ng, particular its legality in light of recent government bans. This will be done through a case study which we’ll circulate via our mailing list.

This event will operate similarly to our Icebreaker in the first semester, giving you all a chance to catch up over the winter break!

The Second-Year/Third-Year/Postgraduate Formal will be held on Friday the 9th of February 2024 at the Hilton Belfast!

Event details can be found on the slides, with the night featuring a red carpet arrival, three course gourmet dinner, DJ, photographer, photo booth, shimmer wall, executive bar and a charity raffle.

The event will run from 6:30pm until late and we will be sharing a form to collect table plans and dietary requirements soon. A finalised menu will be posted closer to the time.

As our last event of the year, we’ll meet outside the Christmas Market at 6pm for some Christmas fun and drinks. Then we’ll head to Voodoo, Maddens Bar, Kelly’s Cellars, and The Sunflower Bar before we end at The Maverick. Some of us will head to Boombox later, but if you’d rather stay at The Maverick that’s okay too!

It’s getting close to assignment time, which means it’s pizza time at PhilSoc!

We’ll be having a laidback discussion about the use of AI in education on Tuesday, complimented by some Dominoes goodies (vegan and vegetarian options available).

Next week, we’ll be shaking things up and holding our first balloon debate! Starring morally questionable characters…

For those of you who aren’t familiar with balloon debates, it is a debating game similar to the lifeboat metaphor seen in ethics. We will each have to defend why our character deserves a place on a sinking hot air balloon over everyone else.

With prizes for the winners, we hope to see you all there! Followed by drinks in The Parlour😊
