Women have a different demand for vitamins and minerals than men!

Let's look at some and why as women they are so important for us.

B-complex
As we know B-complex is great for energy because it increases metabolism. This means it converts carbohydrates, proteins and fats into energy.
Women's demand on energy resources varies throughout the month as a result of hormone changes and menstrual cycles this can leave us feeling really energetic on some days and lacking energy on others. B-complex supports cellular energy and helps to stabilize those peaks and toughs in our energy.

Folate and Iron
According to the word health organization 29.9% of women are affected by iron deficiency anemia which is thought to be as a result of menstrual blood loss. This is why iron and also folate are so important for women.
Iron is needed to make haemoglobin, a molecule in red blood cells that carries oxygen. During menstruation and even pregnancy, women have an increased demand for Iron and Folate as the need to produce more red blood cells.
Folate is also needed to maintain and build cells which carry the haemoglobin to carry oxygen. Folate so improves fertility, prevents birth defects, promotes heart and brain health and supports hair growth.

Vitamin B12 is one of the main vitamins involved in maintaining a healthy and normal nervous system function. Nerves are fiber structures that carry electrical impulses around the body and help us feel sensations and move etc. Nerves are coated in an insulation layer called the myelin sheath which is needed for them to carry electrical impulses.

Vitamin B12 is needed to create this myelin sheath so a deficiency in B12 can lead to damage of the myelin sheath which makes it harder for nerves to carry messages around the body. This can also lead to pain, numbness, pins and needles (more typically in feet and legs), loss of sensation (on both sides of the body) and decreased motor activity.

Vitamin B12 deficiency is widely undiagnosed and could just be the cause of the symptoms you're experiencing.

Let's look at the link between B12 and Potassium.

B12 is a water soluble vitamin which is used for red blood cell formation, DNA synthesis and nerve function (among so many more).

Potassium is an alkaline metal which works with sodium to create signals in the body and pushes potassium into the cells and pushes sodium out aiding with muscle contractions.

On some occasions when you increase your B12 (through any form for supplement) it increases the potassium demand in order to create red blood cells. This can leave a low level of free potassium in the blood. This can cause mild headaches and muscle weakness. If you have a high potassium diet you're going to get the most out of your B12.

As part of your B12 aftercare it is recommended that if you experience any symptoms of low potassium you should eat foods high in potassium. This includes foods such as bananas, avocados or coconut water.

Theres evidence to suggest that Biotin or vitamin B7 can reduce cholesterol.

There are 2 types of cholesterol low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and people refer to these as bad and good cholesterol respectively. If levels of LDL are too high there's risk of cardiovascular disease and people are typically put on cholesterol medications to help this.

However research has shown that the concentration of blood cholesterol decreased when vitamin B7 was supplemented. This is due to the increase of HDL which helps to safely remove LDL from arteries preventing the build up of plaque that can lead to strokes or heart attacks.

Is there a link between PCOS and vitamins?

Let's look at some research....

Polycystic o***y syndrome (PCOS) is a common condition that affects the way women's ovaries work and while the exact cause remains unknown it's related to abnormal hormone levels (eg insulin) (NHS, 2022).

Medications such as Metformin can be used to manage PCOS but they have side effects and the efficacy in some cases is controversial (Kiani AK et al., 2022).

As a result studies such as Kiani AK et al., (2022) has looked at more natural ways to manage PCOS. Vitamin D was among some of the elements discussed.

The research highlights the link between vitamin D deficiency and insulin resistance in people with PCOS as well some clinical features of this condition. Therefore supplementing vitamin D may improve reproductive and metabolic impaired function such as glucose metabolism and insulin resistance.

Another study by Szczuko M. et al., (2016) illustrated the need for increased Folate, Vitamin C, vitamin D and vitamin B12 in diets of people with PCOS.

Hey 👋

My name's Charlotte owner of Char B Wellness Aesthetics.

I trained as a Vitamin Therapist in June and have now set up a small business based around Vitamin and Wellness. I offer free consultations, vitamin Injections (B12, B-complex, Biotin, vitamin C, Vitamin D, and Glutathione), vitamin liposomals supplements and a range of health screening tests.

I have 10 years experience in the emergency medical setting starting at the bottom as a first aider with St John's and The British Red Cross. I then completed a First Person on Scene qualification enabling me to work as a solo medical response in a London Night club which led me to pursue a career as a Paramedic. I worked as an event medic for athletes at sporting events from go karting to cage fighting, boxing to football, rugby to equestrian while I studied for my degree.

In 2020 I graduated with a 1st Class Hons in Paramedic Science and have been working as a Paramedic since then on ambulances, first response cars and lately mental health response units. My experience over the years has proved invaluable in getting me to where I am now.
