Allowing time for a little self massage can help encourage larynx flexibility and help with efficient voice use. Allowing this time also gives us space to rest and reset the body and mind. All of this is extremely important for a happy, healthy voice.
Here we have some simple steps towards self massage:
1 - The wobble: Take your time with this one. Slow and steady. Clicks are completely normal but if there are any uncomfortable feelings please stop and seek advice.
2 - Side drag: This feels good! Really enjoy this step and take time to slow your breath and mind.
3 - Platysma Stretch: To ge the most out of this stretch you have to take your time. Repeat the downward drags several time to encourage a relaxation across the front of the larynx. When reaching up to the last part of the stretch, make sure your back teeth are touching (not gripping) to get the optimal stretch. Hold it for 20-30 seconds if it’s comfortable.
These stretchs and massage techniques should feel comfortable and enjoyable. If yhere is pain of discomfort please reach out and come see us for advice. ♥️

VOCAL MASSAGE…WHO’S IT FOR?
Thinking of getting a vocal massage, but not sure if it’s right for you?
Ask yourself ‘do I have a voice?’ Then ‘do I use it regularly for work?’
The answers are most likely yes…in which case, YES! vocal massage is right for you!
For anyone that uses their voice daily or for intense periods of time, your voice can become tired, fatigued and uncomfortable. We often dismiss this and carry on with our day. However this can lead to more damage to our voice in the future.
Vocal massage is a patient centered treatment using massage techniques on the soft tissue around the chest, neck and face to relax, relieve and soothe vocal discomfort or irregularities.

We love our clients! Have a read and see what some have to say.
P*e Healthy Guide - huh?
Pantone and Highland Spring have partnered up and released a colour scale to help promote the ‘pee healthy guide’ and we absolutely love it!!
We bang on about drinking water and staying hydrated, but sometimes it can be hard to tell if you are hydrated enough. This handy colour chart can help!
Ideally we’re wanting to be around ‘Feeling good‘ or ‘Highland Spring in your step‘, so next time you go to the loo, have a check in, and if you’re anywhere other than those two, why not have a lovely glass of water?
As voice users it’s so important for your vocal health to stay hydrated! Those wonderful little vocal folds are much happier when they’re able to vibrate with less friction, one way to help that is staying hydrated, both systemic and topical (drinking and steaming).
A hydrated voice is a happy voice.
Happy Wednesday everyone!
The middle of the week sometimes comes along with feelings of tiredness or anxiousness.
It can be in these moments that we struggle to stay focused, or find the confidence we need in our voices, so we’ve got a handy grounding exercise for you to try out.
Take a moment for yourself today and try it out. Repeat as many times as needed.
We hope you have a lovely day!

Spring has sprung🪻🌸🌷
And with that comes the ever looming threat of a scratchy throat, sneezes and a runny nose.
For voice users who suffer with hayfever and allergies it can be a tricky time to navigate.
Here are 6 useful tips to help you keep your voice happy during this period:
🌷 Drink plenty of water - when suffering with allergies and hayfever, hydration is super important, especially if you are taking allergy medication. These medications can dry out the vocal tract and sinuses, so to keep your voice happy keep your hydration up sipping little and often throughout the day.
🪻Steam and nebulise - topical hydration is key to keeping your vocal folds happy. When allergies strike your vocal folds can become inflamed and unhappy, leading to a scratchy throat and hoarse voice. Steaming or nebulising will help to soothe the vocal tract and give the vocal folds the much needed hydration they deserve.
Remember to use saline solution for a nebuliser and boiling water (let it cool for a few minutes before use) for steaming.
🌸 Nasal/Sinus rinse - great for helping to clear any excess mucous in the nasal cavity and clear away any unwanted irritants that might be sitting at the back of your nose.
We use the NeilMed sinus rinses. Available online or in most chemists.
🌷 Saline nasal spray - super handy for keeping the nasal cavity hydrated and clearing out excess mucous when you aren’t able to do a full nasal rinse. These are different from decongestant nasal sprays, which, whilst being helpful in moments of congestion, can also be very drying to your voice. If you’re looking for a saline nasal spray, make sure it only contains either saline or salt water. These are available at most chemists.
🪻SOVT exercises - therapeutic exercises are your friend when your vocal folds are inflamed. Wide straws in water, puffy cheeks or lip trills are a great way to help gently warm up/cool down your voice. The back pressure will help to reduce the inflammation and ease your voice into a comfortable place in order to speak or sing.
🌸 Pacing/Vocal naps - if your voice is struggling due to allergies, be kind to your voice and allow time to rest. Adding in regular, short vocal naps throughout the day will help to conserve your vocal battery and help to reduce fatigue. If you have a busy day, pace your voice use, being aware of overdoing it and taking from tomorrows vocal battery.

Tinnitus and hearing loss can affect anyone, but singers and musicians are particularly vulnerable
Repeated exposure to loud music and noise can cause damage to the delicate hair cells in the inner ear, which can lead to tinnitus and other forms of hearing loss.
Tinnitus can have a significant impact on a singer’s ability to perform.
As singers and musicians, it is crucial to take steps to protect your hearing and prevent tinnitus.
Some tips for protecting your hearing include:
✨ Wear earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones when performing or rehearsing in loud environments.
✨ Take regular breaks to give your ears a rest and allow them to recover from exposure to loud noise.
✨ Regular hearing tests to monitor your hearing and identify any potential problems early.
As it is tinnitus awareness week, we wanted to highlight the brilliant scheme that Help Musicians have available for singers and musicians for a heavily discounted audiological assessment and custom-made hearing protection.
