What’s the point of studying religion? That was a comment on one of our previous posts.

Well, around 85% of the world’s population have some kind of religious affiliation – so religion has a major impact on the wellbeing of our planet and its population.

In many cases, that impact is positive. Religion offers meaning, purpose and hope, and provides community and connection. At its best, it drives people to alleviate poverty and promote justice and peace.

Sadly, however, its impact is sometimes negative. Misunderstandings and mistaken or competing beliefs can lead to various kinds of conflict, violence, and war.

That’s why it matters that people keep trying to understand religion, and, where necessary, to question it.

So, by studying religion, you can think about life’s ‘big questions’ for yourself, take part in the ongoing debate, and, perhaps, use your knowledge to help others in your current or future context.

The Bachelor of Divinity is one of the oldest programmes at the University of London. It was taught at King’s College London for many years and is held by graduates across the world, including the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu. The programme is now offered entirely online but the association with King’s remains as, since 2017, the programme has been directed by the University of London Worldwide and hosted by King’s, whose Department of Theology and Religious Studies is in the top ten TRS departments in the UK.

The programme consists of twelve modules and you can pay by module, taking up to six years to compete the full degree programme (shorter programmes are available). Applications for 2024-25 close on 2 September 2024.

Encountering Islam through Rabi’a of Basra - Sarum College 26/10/2023

Our Tutor in Islam, Dr Shanon Shah, is offering the following short course at Sarum College, Salisbury, on Wednesday 29th November, 10.00-16.00:

Encountering Islam through Rabi’a of Basra

The poetry attributed to Rabi’a is foundational to the story of Sufism, the mystical tradition within Islam.

Yet the stories about Rabi’a – and speculation about how these stories came to be told – are equally important to appreciate the power of her poetry and overall legacy. Together, Rabi’a’s poetry and the stories about her life offer valuable insights into lesser-known aspects of early Islam, including some interesting observations about gender.

We can also explore some correspondences between Rabi’a and women mystics in other faith traditions – the legacy of Julian of Norwich for Christians comes to mind.

In this course, we will read and enjoy some of the best-loved poetry attributed to Rabi’a. We will also delve into some of the miracle stories associated with her life. We will situate Rabi’a’s poetry and life within the larger tradition of Sufism and reflect on how this can enrich spiritual sharing and learning within and between different faith traditions.

About the Tutor

Dr Shanon Shah is director of Faith for the Climate, a UK-based charity that aims to encourage, equip, and inspire people of faith to take effective action to address the climate crisis. He is also Tutor in Islam at the University of London’s Divinity Programme and conducts research at the Information Network Focus on Religious Movements (Inform), affiliated with King’s College London. He writes and publishes widely on the intersections of religion, popular culture, and social justice and holds a doctorate in the sociology of religion from King’s College London. Now based in London, he was a multiple award-winning singer-songwriter, playwright, and journalist in his native Malaysia.
