Director Professor Kingsley Abbott spoke this morning with Anthony Finkelstein of City, University of London (and former Chief Scientific Adviser for National Security) opening the event “Shaping the future: rethinking the role universities play in international relations.”

During their discussion they covered everything from the multifaceted and interrelated crises the world is currently facing, engagement with China, the elections in the UK, the fact science and technology are increasingly at the heart of geopolitics, whether Universities are geopolitical actors themselves, to how they can better engage with policy makers in this environment.

The event continues today and tomorrow, read more here:

🎇 Exciting Opportunity in Human Rights Practice & Academia in London 🎇

A new unique, full-time role has just been created here at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, School of Advanced Study

Senior Lecturer in International Human Rights
https://www.jobs.london.ac.uk/Job/JobDetail?isPreview=Yes&jobid=2810
CLOSING DATE - THIS FRIDAY!!!!

Based in London, this is not a traditional academic role - it will suit an experienced human rights practitioner interested in working in the space between academia and human rights practice/policy within a leading University.

The opportunity is to join our growing team of outstanding academics, practitioners and fellows to engage with everything the Institute does from implementing programs in the UK and around the world, to teaching a ground-breaking MA in human rights practice.

We are looking for someone with an entrepreneurial working style who thrives when implementing a broad range of human rights and policy projects (including internationally), developing new areas of work, and engaging with the full spectrum of stakeholders from human rights defenders to policy makers and our many partners.

It is an exciting time, as the Institute, which houses the Human Rights Consortium research stream, is in a period of growth with new projects underway and being developed, including in three main focus areas:

1. Strengthening the rule of law;
2. Combatting climate change; and
3. Promoting freedom of expression and digital rights.

Some key projects include working with the International Commission of Jurists and The Commonwealth on a human rights approach to criminal law in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean as part of the global campaign to decriminalise poverty and status; looking at the impact of emerging technologies on international relations; and developing work around climate and environmental justice - and ecocide.

Applicants should be able to support the taught masters programme in understanding and securing human rights.

Opportunities for PhD supervision are available (training can be offered).

A PhD is not required.

Please share with those who may be interested.

Dr Corinne Lennox will be joining a distinguished panel tomorrow on 11 June 2024 at 13:00 BST to discuss 'Carving out a norm at the UN on the rights of communities discriminated on work and descent'.

She will be sharing some insights from her book "Transnational Social Mobilisation and Minority Rights" (Routledge 2020) where she has compared the agency and 'norm entrepreneurship' of Indigeneous Peoples, Roma, People of African Descent and Dalits to assert their rights claims at the regional and global levels through common strategies.

There will then be a roundtable discussion on the growing movement of communities united on the basis of discrimination on work and descent, which includes caste and analagous systems in Asia, Europe, Africa and Latin America.

We thank the Global Forum of Communities Discriminated on Work and Descent (GFoD) and their many partners for hosting this important discussion.
