The RAI Film Festival is recruiting volunteers and interns to support the 15th edition of the festival, taking place in Bristol 29 March- 1 April 2017. This is a wonderful opportunity to get involved with the festival, to get to know other volunteers, students and filmmakers, and to gain experience in event organising. And you’ll get a chance to watch some great ethnographic films along the way too! All interns and volunteers will receive a free festival pass.

‘Visual Anthropology and the City’ is a two-day-symposium at Royal Anthropological Institute (RAI) and UCL Institute of Archaeology, Heritage Studies, which brings together anthropologists, filmmakers and artists.

Urban anthropology has fascinated journalists, photographers and policy makers with the emergence of the Chicago School since the 1920s. Ethnography and long-term research facilitated deeper insights into the everyday lives of urban neighborhoods that were often associated with violence, crime and housing problems.

Eisenstein in Mexico

Eisenstein shot 50 hours of footage on location in Mexico in 1931 and 32, but was not able to finish the film. Despite luminous, astonishing images that leap from the screen, the film became mired in proprietorial scuffles. This event will screen three hypothetical versions of Eisenstein's film - as prepared by Marie Seton (Time in the Sun, 1939), by Pavel Sergeyevich Alexandrov (¡Que viva México!, 1979) and by Oleg Kovalev (Mexican Fantasy, 1998).

Slow Cinema is a one-day-symposium at UCL, which brings together academics, filmmakers, curators and critics and is held at the Institute of Archaeology, Department of Museum and Cultural Heritage Studies, 31-34 Gordon Square, London WC1H 0PY on Friday 22 April 2016 9.30-18.00 in G6LT.

“It’s not slow cinema, it’s cinema,” insists Filipino independent film director Lav Diaz following the screening of his eight-hour film at the Berlinale in January 2016: “It’s cinema, it’s just like poetry, just like music, just like painting where it’s free, whether it’s a small canvas or it’s a big canvas, it’s the same. Cinema shouldn’t be imposed on.”

‘Slow Cinema’ is a controversial term and refers to a variety of phenomena in filmmaking: long takes, long films, emphasis on landscape and architecture, excess of time, and a wide-ranging use of soundscapes. Filmmakers such as Jacques Rivette, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Béla Tarr, Lav Diaz, Chantal Akerman, Pedro Costa, or James Benning have experimented with representations of time and silence. Equally, ethnographic films, observational documentary and experimental art films employ typical elements of slow cinema: long takes, the absence of a linear narrative or voiceover to pay homage to their subjects. Sukhdev Sandhu wrote in the Guardian in 2012: “Its techniques of dissolves, cutting and montage mirrored the rhythms – at once alienating and exhilarating – of modern life”.

In this symposium we will discuss films and writings on the subject from both academic and practitioners’ perspectives. The event is organised by Barbara Knorpp (UCL) and Claire Loussouarn (Goldsmiths). All welcome!

Civil Rights Documentary Cinema and the 1960s: Transatlantic Conversations on History, Race and Rights

This conference - held in memory of American social activist, politician and leader in the civil rights movement Julian Bond (1940-2015) - brings together documentary filmmakers, activists, and film, history and media scholars. Its focus is films based in civil rights history and inspired by it. It will promote a trans-Atlantic exchange of ideas around film production, activist subjects, and historical research in the making of civil rights cinema, civil rights history and cultural memory. It examines race and rights - activism, massive resistance, film and visual cultures - to intervene creatively in the history of the 1960s and in the historiography of the civil rights movement.

Imagining Facts: Documentary Narratives and the Indian Nuclear Project

In the current Indian scenario where diverse people’s movements challenge the Indian state’s nuclear project, we ask what is the role of “scientific facts” in providing legitimacy for particular truth claims? Through a curated screening of non-fiction films from 1960s onwards, the session will explore how documentary becomes a terrain to articulate opposing assertions about the Indian nuclear project. The films from the archives of Films Division, the key filmmaking unit of government of India, provide striking examples of non-fiction strategies which get mobilized to create expert claims about the “safe” nature of the nuclear project. However the certainty of such facts are challenged through other representations. The session will discuss the particular ways in which diverse narratives resist the hegemony and violence of 'undeniable facts', and address the gap between pro-nuclear documentary assertions, on the one hand, and the filing of sedition cases against anti-nuclear protestors, on the other.



The films will be introduced by curator Fathima Nizaruddin (University of Westminster). The screening will be followed by a discussion with Prof. Raminder Kaur (University of Sussex), author of the book Atomic Mumbai: living with the radiance of a thousand suns, Prof. Joram ten Brink (Academic Director, International Centre for Documentary and Experimental Film, University of Westminster) and the curator. Master filmmaker Patricio Guzmán has established himself as the voice of those silenced and ‘disappeared’ by the two-decade dictatorship of Chilean General Augusto Pinochet. In his previous film Nostalgia for the Light, Guzmán overlaid the ongoing search for the regime's victims with a contemplation on the unfathomable mysteries of the cosmos. Here, he finds an equally poetic metaphor in another vast universe considerably closer to home.

With his new film, The Pearl Button, Guzmán turns his eye toward the ocean to uncover the decimation of the indigenous people of Patagonia. In pre-colonial times, the nomadic Kaweskar (or “water people”) lived and thrived in harmony with the sea; today they have all but vanished. Water as the stuff of life, as a way of life, as a means of living, traveling and connecting, beckons the upheaval of memory, as we are taken on a lyrical journey through the landscape of Chile’s often hushed-up past. Interviewing the last of the Kaweskar, Guzmán chronicles the terrible devastation wrought by this almost complete genocide, discovering an unsettling parallel to the thousands who disappeared in more recent times.
