Urgent Call for Passage of SOGIE Equality Bills in the Philippines!📰🏳️‍🌈

Despite years of advocacy and growing social acceptance, the SOGIE Equality Bills in the Philippines face continued delays due to pushbacks from conservative and religious groups. These bills aim to prohibit discrimination based on Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression (SOGIE), but their passage remains uncertain.

Filipinos have always been resilient in the face of adversity. Being resilient and having the ability to navigate climate disasters may be one of the remarkable characteristics of a Filipino. However, we need more than just the ability to bounce back. While we remain strong and resilient, we call for climate accountability from the national and local authorities and other concerned stakeholders. We need sustainable solutions and proactive policies that safeguard and protect our communities and the environment.

My name is Jomar Mosela, and I come from the beautiful and resource-rich mountains of North Upi, Maguindanao Del Norte. Despite growing up in a close-knit Teduray community, I faced persistent discrimination and prejudice due to my identity. This experience has motivated me to advocate for Indigenous rights, self-governance, and ancestral domain. Since 2014, I have been involved with the Teduray Lambangian Youth Student Association (TYLSA), which aims to empower Indigenous youth and advocate for our rights within the Bangsamoro region.

In 2018, I became a council member and local coordinator for AKMK, where I collaborate with diverse youth in Mindanao to promote tolerance, mutual understanding, and solidarity. Additionally, I led the climate justice program of AKMK, which aims to highlight the crucial role of Indigenous youth in protecting and sustaining our Indigenous Knowledge, System, and Practices (IKPS) in the face of climate change. Through these efforts, I have witnessed the remarkable creativity and aspirations of our youth, which amplify our agency and interest in a cohesive, inclusive, and sustainable future for the tri-people community in Mindanao.

Join us in making a difference. Your support can help us nurture these creative skills, build peace, and shape a sustainable future for tri-people youth. To support our initiatives, partner with us, or collaborate, visit our page for contact information.

The Tri-People Youth Collective for Peace of Mindanao (AKMK) proudly congratulates the following youth leaders and advocates for their academic milestones.

𝐉𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐨 𝐕𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧. Jhino is one of the many talented young people from Lanao del Norte that AKMK had the opportunity to share and work with on many advocacy and community works including the four-year 𝘐𝘯𝘤𝘭𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘓𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘮 with Human Security Collective and the #𝘓𝘎𝘉𝘛𝘐𝘓𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘔𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳: 𝘈𝘤𝘤𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘎𝘳𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘳𝘰𝘰𝘵𝘴 𝘛𝘳𝘪-𝘗𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘓𝘎𝘉𝘛𝘐 𝘔𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘛𝘰𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘴 𝘙𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘴-𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘌𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵. AKMK is proud of your milestone and wishes you the best as you start your new journey.

𝐂𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐞. (Mohammad Jalani) Cookie's story brings an important realization to most of us. Cookie has been part of a four-year journey under the 𝘐𝘯𝘤𝘭𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘓𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘮 with Human Security Collective and has worked as Local Coordinator for the #𝘓𝘎𝘉𝘛𝘐𝘓𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘔𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 project. Cookie's identity and intersectional story made our journey with them more meaningful. AKMK is grateful for the opportunity to work with a brave youth and we sincerely wish you success and happiness in your next journey.

𝐀𝐜𝐞. Ace is among the few young and talented artists that AKMK has worked with. Ace generously shared his skills and knowledge with the organization capturing and documenting the journey of the tri-people youth from different parts of Mindanao. His talent in videography and photography made it possible for AKMK to share its work and the stories of the tri-people youth to a greater audience. AKMK lauds this well-deserved academic milestone and we wish you success in your future endeavors.

As a youth-led and youth-serving organization, AKMK will continue to share its platform in amplifying the stories of the youth, the stories that matter, stories that humanize and inspire us to do more, and continue elevating the tri-people youth of Mindanao.

Despite the heavy rain, the determination and desire of the LGBT community in Iligan to celebrate Pride shows the zestful character of everyone. Pride celebration louds this character as the enthusiasm and the energy of the LGBT fuel the continuous plight of the community, its empowerment, inclusion, and liberation.

The event was not a mere first-time experience but a moment in history, that Pride is for everyone and Iligan just opened the door to bring inspiring LGBT stories and narratives to the limelight. At the core of the March was the essence of Pride --- protest --- not in a combative way but in ways that humanize our identities. Hence, the socially informed placards that call for action and change.

Our profound gratitude to everyone who marched, performed, and supported the celebration. You guys are the real people behind the success of the event. The celebration made it clear that the LGBT of Iligan is alive, colorful, and driven. We hope this transcends and goes beyond Pride month as our path to genuine liberation and acceptance does not end this month.

Huge thanks to SenRi (Senator Risa Hontiveros) for the solidarity message. It meant a lot to every LGBT.

Ug sa among mga ka collab --- IMGLAD, Pinas Safe Spaces, GAD Iligan, ug uban pa --- daghang salamat! Dakong salamat to Iligan City!

So, unsa man? Mas ipa-bongga nato next year?
See you next year mga Ate Cute!

We started the month with one campaign in mind, "Bringing Pride at the Margin". For us, pride is a protest and an empowerment. As a protest, it doesn't have to be combative, it can take the form of building better understanding, knowledge sharing, and relationships with communities. Bringing pride at the margin means we bring awareness to communities, sharing the stories and narratives of the LGBTQI+ community, and uplifting the human condition for every q***r individual.

In our fifth SOGIESC orientation, we went to the hinterland barangay of Rogongon and conducted a learning session on SOGIESC. Our heartfelt thanks to Brgy. Rogongon especially to the Brgy. Kagawad, Rodel So-ong, and Paula Bayking for the assistance and for allowing us to talk about SGOIESC and share our stories.

Embrace your SOGIESC!

“This highlights an existing internal and class-based disparity within the LGBTQI and Q***r movements that sideline the rural LGBTQI members in the mainstream picture. Despite this, there are grassroots groups and organizations trying to bring Pride to some rural communities in Mindanao this June. For example, the LGBTQI-led group in Lebak, Sultan Kudarat, will organize , the first-ever Pride March in Sultan Kudarat. Additionally, an LGBTQI organization in Lanao del Norte, and USBAW LGBTQI in Tigbao, Zamboanga del Sur, will also organize their first-ever LGBTQI event. Furthermore, a consortium of LGBTQI and youth-led organizations in partnership with LGU-Iligan has organized their first Pride March on June 22.”

𝐀𝐊𝐌𝐊 𝐎𝐅𝐅𝐈𝐂𝐈𝐀𝐋 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓

Since 2010, many students and faculty have been victimized by this culture of killings inside the campus, and until now, the culprits still walk freely. Justice was not served. It has never been served. This uncertain situation left a chilling effect on the entire student population, faculty members, staff, and even the MSU residents. As a national peace institution, Mindanao State University needs to promote, uphold, and protect the rights of its constituents.

The AKMK is saddened by the inhumane and morally reprehensible act of violence committed against innocent lives. These acts have no place in society and are under no circumstance tolerable. We condemn the act in the strongest terms possible as it undermines the dignity and humanity of every person. This incident adds to the long list of horrifying acts of violence on the campus many lives have been taken and for the longest time their names have been written in sand; forgotten in time while accountability has become more opaque. This is no more no less an act of terrorism and terror has no space in an institution mandated to bring peace among the diverse people of Mindanao.

It is even more appalling that the terror attack happened during the celebration of the Mindanao Week of Peace proving that there is a dire need for a systemic redress on the status of peace and security. The MSU community did not fall short in calling for justice, accountability, and strengthening of security on the premises yet this appears to fall on deaf ears which begs the behavioral integrity of the past leaders who promised change. The failure to fulfill has been consequential to the lives of the MSU constituents and the peace and security in the area. This gravely places the peace in MSU volatile.

Our deepest sympathy and condolences to bereaved families. Our hearts bleed with you. In solidarity, we stand in grief and compassion, and in our call for accountability and justice.

We amplify the call for accountability, justice, transparency, and proactive actions of the authorities. AKMK, together with the MSU students demands from the MSU authorities, residents, local leaders, and security sector to:

1. Conduct transparent, accountable, and immediate investigation on the cases of killings and other criminal cases on the campus to bring justice to the victims;

2. Organize a dialogue with Barangay and Community Leaders, Residents, Security Sector, Students, Faculty, and Staff;

3. Strengthen the community relations and security mechanism centered on the rights and welfare of the students, faculty, staff, and residents on the campus;

4. Establish a Peace and Security Council centered on the rights and welfare of the students, faculty, staff, and residents on the campus; and

5. Conduct Psychosocial Support to the families, colleagues, and friends of the victims.

AKMK stand with the students, faculty, staff, and communities because we believe that MSU is not mandated only to provide quality education but to ensure and defend the rights and welfare of the students, faculty, staff, and residents.

JUSTICE NOW!

𝗘𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗩𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲!

The fight against GBV and inequalities continues. The AKMK is in solidarity with the 18-day campaign to end VAW and this statement signifies our commitment to fighting for women's rights

Fighting against gender-based violence and inequalities would require changing the narratives and structures of how women should be perceived and treated. The journey of providing a society a much safer place and equitable for each and everyone in it consequently requires a multifaceted, collective, and sustained effort from individuals, communities, governments, and organizations.

The cases of gender-based violence in the Philippines according to the Foundation for Media Alternatives in their articles and research on gender-based violence in the country have further continued from the decades and decades in the past up until the present, which they have shown based on their research and investigative documentation.

According to one of their posted article, one out of four women have encountered and are victimized physically, psychologically, sexually, emotionally, and even financially by gender-based violators in their lifetime. And one out of 20 women have experienced online gender-based violence in their lifetime. And among these cases, only a few of the violators were reprimanded and filed cases against them according to the Women’s help desk.

The same case in several communities in Mindanao, many young women face inequalities due to traditional gender roles, especially in areas susceptible to both natural and man-made disasters. When conflicts and displacement arise, these women are often forced to abandon their homes, and education, and live in overcrowded evacuation centers with other internally displaced persons (IDPs). As a result, they are more vulnerable to gender-based violence and human trafficking and must work to support their families. These young women are frequently seen as vulnerable victims of armed conflicts and natural disasters.

In certain cultures, it is still common for young women to get married at a young age, which can lead to early pregnancies and responsibilities of caring for children and family. This can deprive them of their future opportunities. Young women living in remote areas often face difficulty in accessing further education and are sometimes forced to support their families. As a result, they may feel like they have no other option but to get married early.

During the peak of the pandemic, many young women experience mental health issues and hopelessness as they struggle with blended education, being forced to drop out of school, and being unable to work, pushing them further into poverty. According to reports, being forced to stay at home due to the prolonged quarantine has exposed many young women and children to online sexual exploitation, and increased gender-based violence such as r**e, and early pregnancies.

This could continue if we remain silent and turn a blind eye to a structural problem in which we are all involved and affected, particularly young women and girls. So much for just empowering women, it is also high time to challenge and counter how women should be viewed in this patriarchal society that our generation has woken up into. Liberating women from violence and machismo cultures requires everyone to understand that no gender is higher than the other, no gender holds much power against the other, and no gender, in any way is authorized and granted the right to inflict harm to others. Understanding this and extending the efforts to transcend it to everyone holistically, would then mean not just protecting and freeing women alone but also everyone from the oppression, abuses and violence. We are not just worth empowering but every one of us must be celebrated and be at peace in a society of safe spaces.

The Alyansa ng Kabataang Mindanao para sa Kapayapaan (AKMK) is a convergence of tri-people youth organizations in Mindanao that works for the empowerment of the tri-people (Indigenous Peoples, Bangsamoro, Migrant Settlers) youth to become active actors in peace-building processes, gender justice, human rights, climate justice, and other intersectional issues that are geared towards the realization of just, peaceful and inclusive Mindanao. We believe that young women and girls are half of the population of next-liners who are set to inherit the different socio-political, economic, and cultural spheres of the country. As such, they play a significant role in shaping a more sustainable future for themselves and the future generations in Mindanao.

✊ End Gender-based Violence now!
Women and girls have the right to safe and inclusive spaces.

ALYANSA NG KABATAANG MINDANAO PARA SA KAPAYAPAAN (AKMK)

8th Mindanao Summer Youth Peace Camp

Our Urgent Task: Advancing the Peoples’ Struggles

A Revisit to the Noble History:

Looking back from the time the Alyansa ng Kabataang Mindanao para sa Kapayapaan (AKMK) was formally organized, the major pressing concern that echoed around the corners of Mindanao is the ongoing unrest and sporadic occurrence of armed confrontation between the government forces and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (M**F) that lead to the declaration of an All Out War. The collateral damages were so great that it further fueled the anti peoples sentiments among the inhabitants of Mindanao and its contiguous Islands not to mention the other issues such as the continuous ecological destruction, development aggression, landlessness, and ill delivered social services that put in peril the situation of the marginalized majority of the Tri-People; the Bangsamoro, the Katawhang Lumad and the Mindanao Migrants.

The unanimous cry amongst the young sector of Mindanao was anchored primarily on the recognition of the very rights of the peoples’ taking into account the recognition to the Bangsamoro Struggle for their Right to Self Determination as inclusive to the struggles as well to other peoples’ Right to Self Determination.

History has unfolded, and finally the Bangsamoro are about to gain the sought after recognition of their decade old struggle that took its precedents from the century-old historical injustices that colored the historical consciousness of the people and subsequently reflected on the different programs and policies advanced by the National Government.

The Critical Support

The Alyansa ng Kabataang Mindanao para sa Kapayapaan has consistently stressed on the inclusivity in all aspects concerning the pursuit of long lasting justpeace in Mindanao, inclusivity in the sense that no other peoples’ right will be undermined in whatever initiative that would only cater a few. The alliance believes that only in a genuine grassroots involvement could realize and operationalize the sense of ownership in all processes.

Further, the Alliance believes in a sound balance that relates peoples’ action towards the harmony of all creations including the recognition to preserve and protect the environment for the future usage of the coming generation; that our environment is not for sale, and not for political bargaining.

The Peaceful Battle Cry

The upcoming 8th Mindanao Summer Youth Peace Camp is anchored on revisiting the essence of what has long been campaigned by the Alliance for inclusive peace. The development of the peace process between the Government of the Philippines and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (GPH-M**F) opened up the opportunity for the Bangsamoro for self-governance. However, the onset of this pursuit left the tribes of Teduray Lambangian, Dulangan Manobo, Arumanen ne Menuvu, and T’Boli Indigenous Tribes question the future of their self governance as well, as they were subjected to be directly under the Bangsamoro Government. It is in this condition, that the entire membership of the alliance felt the need to address the valid struggle of the Indigenous peoples’ for recognition as well. The alliance believes that the deed of emancipating one people is all the more noble if it is inclusive in its purest sense.

It is now or never. The young peoples’ of Mindanao would want to make it a trend, as a popularized method of advancing the interest of all the tri-peoples’ of Mindanao. Let it be known that the Alyansa ng Kabataang Mindanao is for #InclusivePeace: Tara, Sama Ka.
