Missed out on the buzz at our Open House on 31 July? Here are snapshots of the live action! To support women entrepreneurship, we invited WINGS women and Trainers to set up booths at WINGS. The pop-up stores were well-received. Many enjoyed the delectable baked goodies and beautifully handcrafted items.

We thank our talented WINGS women Rina Ong and Pauline Ho for putting up an exciting Ukulele performance that rocked the centre. We sang-along to familiar oldies and National Day songs. Some women also got the opportunity to learn about new skills at our free talks, like Closed Forest Terrarium, making Turmeric Tonic and many more. Many thanks to our generous sponsors MILO Singapore, Axe Oil and New Moon for the goody bags and lucky draw prizes, which added to the joyous mood!

WINGS celebrated National Day early with two joyous events. WINGS women had a blast on 2 August as they danced to the beat of this year's National Day song, Shine Your Light. Led by Fitness Trainer Irene Tan and representatives from her Dance & Tone Class, everyone had a great workout at WINGS National Day Celebration at Junction 8 Open Plaza. We were also joined by our friends (and neighbours) from Down Syndrome Association - Singapore. Thank you for bringing good cheer and celebrating National Day together with us!

On 7 August, Joyful Singers, WINGS' Special Interest Circle, presented Rhythms of Red and White. WINGS women were delighted by catchy tunes, a skit performance, and a dance lesson to this year's National Day song. A BIG thank you to Joyful Singers and all performers for putting up an exciting event for WINGS women!

Want to reduce our use of plastic bags? We can by recycling them and giving them a second life! Women from WINGS’ Plarning Special Interest Circle (SIC) are doing just that. Using the art of Plarning, they are turning plastic bags into immaculate daily items such as shopping bags, handbags, bottle carriers, coasters and more!

Can you recognise the brand of plastic bags they are made from?

WINGS’ SUGAR Club – which is a Walking Special Interest Circle - meets every Monday for power walks around Singapore. The members’ goal is to keep fit and form a friendly community of . On one of their recent power walks, they explored Keppel Hill Reservoir. Check out highlights of the mysterious and beautiful reservoir they captured in this post.

The steep incline and unpaved pathways are challenging for seniors. But the scenic reservoir, intriguing World War Two relic, Instagram-worthy spots for photo shoots make all the sweat worth it! Keen to take up the challenge? Betty Teo, volunteer-leader of the group, recommends these tips for senior hikers:
🥾Wear proper hiking shoes as paths might be slippery
🦯Consider using a trekking pole for better support
🔦Bring a torch light to explore the WW2 bunker
💦Plan your route and bring sufficient drinking water (The Walking SIC took about 3 hours for the hike)

A Joyful Noise at Lions Home For The Elders (Bishan)! WINGS’ Joyful Singers and our other volunteers were onsite (5 July 2023) for their monthly sing-along session with the residents here. Joining them this time was 15-year old Annelise Lachman from SJI International School. Anne who was interning with WINGS during her summer school break, wrote about her inter-generational experience below.

“The Joyful Singers held a mini concert, singing all-time favourite songs in English and Mandarin. The rest of us distributed food and treats to the seniors and handed out goodie bags full of old-school snacks that delighted their tastebuds. The seniors were pleasantly engaged in the performance. Some even requested the Joyful Singers to sing their favourite songs! There were also sculpted balloon gifts for those celebrating their birthdays this month.

Helping out at the Lions Home has changed my perspective on aging. The volunteering experience taught me that age is not a barrier to leading a fulfilling life! Watching the residents' enthusiasm for learning, engaging in activities, and maintaining social connections has reshaped my perspective on the possibilities of later stages of life.”

: Losing one's hair due to cancer is painful for adults, and more so for children. And two WINGS women, Amy Choong and Patti Ho, have felt moved to support the annual Hair for Hope fundraiser for children with cancer.

Amy Choong had her head shaved on 25 May 2023 – it’s her second time supporting the fundraiser. This year, it is extra meaningful for her. She is celebrating her 60th birthday and asks friends and family to donate to the fundraiser as her birthday present. Having lost her dad and brother to cancer, she knows how difficult it is to manage the illness.

For 11th time participant Patti Ho, her reason for joining remains the same – to show children with cancer that "we are in this together". Apart from raising funds, she sees it as an opportunity to share about the plight of children with cancer. Whenever anyone asks her about her shaved head, she tells them about the pain children had to go through when undergoing treatment for cancer. Patti had her head shaved on 27 May 2023.

Chronic loneliness is a growing public health challenge for seniors. Some seniors become socially withdrawn after major life transitions like retirement, when a social role is lost; or when they face a decline in health and finance. Samaritans of Singapore reported that calls received from older people were about their struggle with loneliness and isolation, psychological distress and strained relationships. It added that elderly suicides involving those aged above 60, went up by 26% from 2019 to 2020.

But there are steps we can take to alleviate and prevent loneliness. Building more social exchanges, discovering novel experiences and creating new routines are some ways to get started. It is also important to join social groups that allow you to form deeper bonds with a community of friends. At WINGS, we have Special Interest Circles (SIC) for women to further their interests such as singing, walking and sudoku.
