‘Alternative Ecology: Redistributing the Sensible’ celebrated LASALLE’s new MA Arts and Ecology programme with a week of activities and art by creative practitioners who examined the intersection of the arts, science and technology.

Across the week, various discussions and workshops were run by guest artists Elena Soterakis, Richelle Ellis and Chng Nai Wee, whose unique practices all fall under art-science epistemology.

One workshop by Ellis zoomed in on the Great Pause Project (initiated by herself, Soterakis and Isabel Beavers) – an open-source record of humanity’s remembrance of the COVID-19 pandemic. As of February this year, this nickel nanofiche now lives permanently on the Moon’s South Pole, projected to live millions of years longer than its creators.

Substantive conversations about and developments like this in the intricate co-interpolation of the arts and sciences are core to the MA Arts and Ecology programme. Our pioneering batch will mature into creative practitioners, ecologists and researchers with the ability to field environmental discourse and build sustainable futures through the humanities.

Lights, camera, action! Eye spy sharp new looks from Lenskart Singapore and School of Design Communication alumni Valencia Barbie Huisaini, Dion Chai, Lee Jia Xuan and Isabella Chapelle-Wan. 😎

In support of local creativity, Lenskart Singapore invited LASALLE students to submit designs for their latest nature-inspired collection. Winning designs by Valencia, Dion, Jia Xuan and Isabella became prints and moulded motifs on the arms and temples of gorgeous spectacle frames — and yes, they’re real, and yes, you can get them in-stores and online.

We’re so glad that the now-Class of 2023 alumni not only get to see their designs come to life, but model them along with fellow local designer FERNE.

Thank you to the crew that made these lovely photos possible:

: Heartened to see BA (Hons) Fine Arts alumnus Kim Whye Kee share his story in Ministry of Education, Singapore's schoolbag.sg article “The comeback kid: How an ex-inmate found solace in student life and pottery”.

Now in his early 40s, Whye Kee understands more clearly than ever that it takes a village to break a disempowering cycle. Much of it was owed to his dedication to his own learning, a helping hand to effect change, and an academic environment that embraced his maturity.

Thanks to that, Whye Kee was able to enrol in LASALLE (then known as LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts). Art school as a mature student was where he learned to challenge preconceived notions and defend his art. He said, “There are two things I gained from LASALLE: one of them is critical thinking and the other is friendship. It was a welcoming environment where I was not looked down upon.”

He majored in sculpting and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts with second upper class honours at 29 years old.

Whye Kee continues to give back to the community by volunteering to engage and rehabilitate inmates and ex-convicts. Congratulations for your recent reception of the Singapore Prison Service (SPS) Long Service Award! See his calming zen style and love for sculpting and exquisite teaware at his artist account, Qi Pottery.

Melding two types of fiber arts, the Year 2s used RJ Paper’s colourful off-cuts by weaving shapes and colours together, embodying and putting their own spin on Asian traditional weaving.
