Jeff Coombs Memorial Road Race/Walk and Family Day

It soon became a favorite event -- a great road race but also a fun day for families.

The Jeff Coombs Memorial Road Race was created by a group of friends, spearheaded by Donna Cherry, 19 years ago after Jeff was killed in the 2001 terrorist attacks. The Jeff Coombs Memorial Foundation provides assistance to families across Massachusetts who are affected by death, illness or other situations that challenge them emotionally and financially. It also supports military families throug

For 12 years the JCMF foundation has been very fortunate to be included in the John Hancock Charity Marathon program. Our awesome runners (3 each year the last 9 years or so) have raised an amazing $40,000 a year with every penny going to fund the important work we do of helping those in need. This year the BAA took back responsibility for the charity program as JH has passed on sponsorship to Bank of America after 15 years. Our foundation doesn’t qualify for the small non-profit category because we don’t meet their criteria. I’m very disappointed as this has been a very lucrative and fun fundraiser for us and our runners, but it is what it is and I’m sure other small non profits who do qualify will do amazing things with the money they’re able to raise. Let me be clear in emphasizing no organization is at fault. Every new relationship/sponsorship comes with change — good for many , maybe not for others but that’s all part of new beginnings. I have a wonderful working relationship with Bank of America, and the BAA will lead a great charity program as they have for many many years. I truly enjoyed being able to offer people the opportunity to fulfill their dream of running Boston when they knew they couldn’t qualify on their own. But I’m hoping there might be some qualifying runners out there who hope to run Boston or any other marathon and who would like to run for a great cause and raise some money for the foundation. We will pay their registration fee of $375 and give them a cool running singlet if they raise at least $2000. Piece of cake considering our charity runners in past years have raised $10,000 ea!!! Please pass this on to your marathoner friends. I know registration for Boston hasn’t yet begun but other marathons are coming up in the fall. Thanks for your help with this!!!

One week from today, 3 amazing guys will run the Boston Marathon in honor of the Jeff Coombs Memorial Foundation through the John Hancock Charity Program. They've been working hard to raise $10k each. Collectively, they've almost reached their $30,000 goal. If you can, please help them get there with a donation of any amount you're comfortable with. No amount is too small! Just click on this link and choose a runner to support -- Jack Houghton, Aby Youseff, or Mark DeLappier. https://www.givengain.com/cause/43080/campaigns/25102/
Every penny they raise goes directly to the Foundation to help us continue our important work of helping those in Massachusetts who truly need it. Without the annual road race (I miss it ... do you??), the marathon fundraising is our primary source of funds to get us through the year. Your generosity is much appreciated by the Foundation and all those who benefit from our grants. Thank you!

I will miss seeing everyone and will miss seeing the community come out all together to remember, honor and have fun. There is a small, first time local 5k you can run on Sept. 18 if you like road races. check it out ... https://racewire.com/register.php?id=13017

After more than a week of trying to regroup, relax, and prepare for the next big thing ... my daughter's wedding ... I can finally sit down and write some reflections on the final Road Race. If I were to sum it up in one word, it would be "Wow." Wow for the more than 1400 people who came out to remember Jeff and all those who died, including the heroes who served our country and made the ultimate sacrifice post-9/11; Wow for beautiful day that it was; Wow for the volunteers and the committee that worked so hard to make the day incredible, memorable and awe-inspiring; Wow for the restaurants who provided food for everyone in spite of the tough year prior, and the amazing sponsors; Wow for the money that you all helped us raise by your generosity, totaling a whopping $90,000+ (about $40,000 over what we usually raise); and Wow for the kindness, enthusiasm and love that was evident throughout the morning. We are truly blessed to live in a town like Abington that has supported us emotionally the last 20 years. As I ran and walked the course that morning, I was touched by the number of people who stood outside their homes cheering on the runners and walkers, and those who set out candy and other treats for the participants to enjoy. When I looked out at the vast crowd that gathered behind the school before and after the run, I couldn't help but feel pride in what a small group of friends created 20 years ago, and how it became such a beloved event. While every year is bittersweet, this year had an extra element to it, like saying goodbye to an old friend for the last time. Jeff’s family has always been there, and having some of my large family there this year was extra special. 20 years is a long time, and when I think that we kept it going and maintained the interest for 20 years, I'm amazed. I know Jeff was looking down on us, beaming with pride himself, and showering everyone with gratitude. Much of that gratitude goes to Maureen Tomlin, Bill Balfour, Kristy and Ken Coburn, for their superior efforts toward making it such a success. A big thanks to Woodsdale school and Mike Russell and the rest of the committee -- Robin O’Neil, Erin Woods, Julie Cawley, Ken London, Jeff's brother Doug, Nancy Cooney, Kristine and Rich Smith, and David Codero. And to our primary sponsors -- Cellphones for Soldiers, Cape Cod Lumber, Atlantic Elevator, Stop and Shop, and Country Rentals, thank you for your commitment and generosity. One of Jeff's favorite mantras was "Do it right or don't do it at all." I think he would agree that we did it right for 20 years. Thanks to all of you for coming year after year, and opening your wallets for our cause. ❤ Although the road race has come to an end, the remembering and honoring, and paying it forward, will continue.

In recognition of Jeff's Birthday on the day of the roadrace (sept. 18), were were going to release 58 balloons. But I've researched balloon releases further, and in spite of once reading that they were harmless to the environment, more research defies that, so we won't release any balloons. Any suggestiions for a healthy and fun substitute?
