Here is a look at our week ahead! Please note, Wednesday is Patriot Day, students are encouraged to wear Red, White, & Blue.

Did you know that in addition to school wide celebrations, students can sign up for our Lunch (12-2) and Extended Day (2-4:30) programming?

Mondays are all about problem solving and collaboration with our Puzzles and Games; Tuesdays students learn all about the big world we live in during "Worldly Wonders" with Ms. Nan and Ms. Kathleen! Next up students can engage in STEAM learning with Ms. Nikki during our "Kaleidoscope Wednesdays", and Thursdays we bring our favorite storybooks to life, during our "Books Alive" program with Ms. Kenlyn. Our Lunch Programs wrap up on Fridays during "Music and Movement" games with Ms. Teressa!

Looking for a fun and easy activity you can do this week? Check out this cute and easy watermelon craft!

You could use pom poms, beans, buttons, or even real watermelon seeds!

For an added challenge for older preschoolers, try writing a number in the center of the watermelon slice art, and encourage them to count out and glue the correct number of "seeds" in place!

This is a fantastic post about writing skills development with your toddler/preschooler. Especially in today's touch screen technology age, this is one of the many reasons we encourage motor development with a variety of amazing manipulatives and fine motor activities built into our school day!

Did you know that a 3-year old (top left image) and a 6-year old (top right image) have significantly different skeletal structure in their hands?! Notice the bones in the wrist of the 3-year old -- many of them are still mostly cartilage! Look at all the spaces in between the bones where muscles and tendons will change through the years. Even the difference between a 6-year old and a 14-year old (lower right) is huge!

Preschoolers have SO much development to do before they can write the way school-aged children or adults can!

Please do NOT stress if your preschooler does not want to write or draw. Some love it and some don't.

While they are growing, strengthen those little bones and muscles! Here are some great pre-writing, muscle-strengthening activities:

* painting, drawing, coloring
* playdough
* tearing and cutting
* gluing
* poking holes in things (try toothpicks and paper!)
* digging in dirt
* building with LEGOS, marble runs, or other blocks
* beading (try beads, cut straws, or even bobbins!)
* puzzles
* squeezing (try stress balls, squeezing water in a sponge, or using a pipette)
* picking up and throwing balls (use different sizes!)
* playing with toys (watch what their little fingers do when they pick up and move little cars, marbles, action figures, etc!)
These all strengthen and help develop little hands, muscles, and bones. When they are physically ready to write, it will be so much easier than if they were pushed when they didn't want to and weren't ready!

With options for early bird drop off by 8AM, daily enrichment lunch programs from 12 to 2, and an extended day program until 430pm, EWS has something for every family. Extended care programs include bringing favorite storybooks to life through Books Alive, improving large motor development through physical fitness games and activities, STEM activities, and exploring our world through cultural and global studies.

Attention Families!

Have you registered for summer camp? As a reminder, the last day of school for EWS will be May 24.

Camp will run on June 3 to 7, and June 10,11,12 (until the end of the FCPS school calendar year)

Registration is required and spaces are filling fast! The deadline to sign up is Thursday, April 25, 2024!

April showers bring May flowers! But what did today's monsoon bring? We hope everyone is safe and dry! (And we're happy to report the pirate ship did not float away, which was a concern for several friends this afternoon at dismissal! Stay dry everyone!

March is truly roaring in like a lion on this lovely windy day. The wind is perfect for blowing in great news! Our beloved S.S. Epiphany has been repaired and is ready to set sail on the playground once more!

It's almost time to say goodbye February, and Hello March!

This week our students will be leaping for joy, because this is a LEAP YEAR! 🐸 What will you do with our extra day this year?

Just a reminder there will be no parent coffee this Thursday, February 29th!

We have had a lovely time this week celebrating National Muffin Day and Chinese New Year! This week we will wrap up with Dental Health. Fabulous February keeps rolling along! So many great adventures have come so far! Students have learned about groundhogs, real hearts, how lungs and the overall body works, presidents, and more! Just a reminder we will be closed Monday, February 19 in honor of President's Day!
