We finished up our last planting of the year this week at Cedar Creek Park West in Allentown. As part of their multi-phase park renovation project, the County Parks Department had the deteriorating tennis courts, gravel lot, and pavilion removed from the wetland and restored the land to a wet meadow. LCCD was awarded funding from PADEP Growing Greener Plus to stabilize the small tributary to Cedar Creek and help further enhance the buffer and floodplain with native trees and shrubs.
Stay tuned for more photos from all of our 2024 plantings and other projects!
ATTENTION LEHIGH GAP NATURE CENTER VISITORS
As of the morning of Sunday, November 3, 2024, an extensive wildfire continues to burn on the Blue Mountain (Kittatinny Ridge) east of the Lehigh Gap. Although the fire does not directly impact the Lehigh Gap Wildlife Refuge or trail system, the Appalachian Trail east of Lehigh Gap Nature Center is currently closed to the public. Hikers are asked to please avoid that area. Visitors should also be aware of possible road closures and impacts on air quality.
We thank the numerous emergency and forestry crews from near and far who have worked tirelessly since Saturday to fight this fire. Due to the outpouring of help from community members, donations of supplies are not currently needed. Monetary donations to our local volunteer fire companies are still appreciated.
With ongoing drought conditions, burn bans are in effect throughout the region. Campfires and all other forms of outdoor burning are strictly prohibited. PLEASE do your part in protecting our communities and first responders!
