Title: What We Talk About When We Talk About Gentrification
In this talk, I'll discuss the Big-D discourses of gentrification and the ways they serve as a form of abstract liberalism to obscure the racialized nature of change. Drawing on ten years of sociolinguistic interview data from the neighborhood of Anacostia, in Washington, D.C., I'll demonstrate how the ways Anacostians talk about their space counters those Big-D discourses at the discourse level, at the narrative level, and at the morphosyntactic level in ways which serve to re-racialize the process of gentrification and strip the agency of outsiders to determine what constitutes "good change." I then back out to look at the bigger questions of the ways gentrification is considered an a-racialized process and how the residents' talk brings race to the forefront, rejecting the colorblind racism assumptions inherent in the abstract liberalism appeal.

Title: Personae in sociolinguistic perception
Work in sociolinguistic variation has traditionally examined correlations between linguistic features and macro-social factors, such as gender, socioeconomic class, or region of origin. However, more recent approaches have focused on the ways that speakers project holistic social personae in interactions through linguistic styles. While the body of work on sociolinguistic style is growing, less is known about the cognitive basis of links between features of linguistic styles and social meanings. This talk explores the social information that can be connected with linguistic expectations for a listener, focusing on how information about a speaker’s holistic persona can influence perceptual behavior in a variety of tasks. Together, these studies show that social knowledge of a speaker is integral to various aspects of linguistic perception, and that knowledge related to a speaker's holistic persona must be represented and linked with linguistic features in the mind.

This lecture is co-sponsored by the Center for Mind, Brain and Culture.

It's been 25 years since we first created our core courses History of the American Languages (LING-101) and Language, Mind and Society (LING-401). These courses – our introduction and our senior seminar – define us as a program and make us unique among linguistics majors worldwide. Read more about our history.

This presentation describes corpus-based discourse analytic approaches to studying the language of COVID-19. Two empirical projects help to uncover and examine patterns in language from early in the pandemic, which continues nearly two years later.

First, a corpus of news media was used to examine the shifts in the meaning words now associated with COVID-19: crisis, social, died, and remote. We then describe how the corpora News on the Web (Davies, 2016- ) and The Coronavirus Corpus (Davies, 2020-) can be used by qualitative researchers to help triangulate their claims with quantitative findings from these databases of naturally-occurring language.

Then, we describe a study of a specialized corpus: university reopening statements from the summer of 2020. These correspondences were studied using genre analysis and corpus-based techniques. Their rhetorical functions and themes (e.g., community solidarity, agency, control) are described through the lens of crisis management.

To wrap up, we turn our attention to the present. The data collected for these studies was from very early on in the pandemic. Messaging was in flux, language reflected the changing of our understanding. We posit ways that, with more known about the virus, for example, such communication may now differ.
