Since its conception, Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church has played an integral role for Boston Catholics in the Jamaica Plain area. Interwoven into the fabric of Jamaica Plain from its founding, history reveals the church’s foundation was laid, both literally and figuratively, by Irish immigrants eagerly searching for a spiritual home.
Once edified, St Thomas became a harbinger of spiritual nourishment and social development. In effect, St. Thomas’ adjunct school was the first to offer coed catholic education for children of all ages, including the handicapped, in New England. For over a century, St. Thomas parish’s school nurtured tens of thousands of students through innovative and holistic educational programs, such as a nationally acclaimed band. As such, St. Thomas directly formed the generations responsible for shaping Boston into the affluent and cosmopolitan city that we know today.
However, recent upticks in drug-related crimes, mental and physical health crises, and poverty, have all battered Boston and its residents. Our city teems with hopeless teens, struggling families, and forgotten elderly who have no recourse to turn to. Consequently, despite St. Thomas’ innumerable community contributions and historical significance, the church has also suffered losses.
But we’re not giving up!
On the contrary, we see the grim present as a door of opportunity and are enthusiastic about the future. Underway is a project intended to rejuvenate, revivify, and beautify our parish! We seek to transform STA into a place where beauty and spiritual formation combine to induce hope and renewal in our community. To return STA to what it has always been: a Christ-like beacon of fellowship, service, and love of neighbor.
Help us accomplish for others what Saint Thomas once accomplished for you.
