Florecer Aquí y Allá: Activism After Deportation and Coerced Return
How do returnees and deportees organize for social justice in Mexico and beyond? Focusing on the event Florecer Aquí y Allá (Flourishing Here and There) which took place in El Zócalo, Mexico City’s main public square, in July 2019, Dr. Guerrero will explore how art, music, spoken word, and performance are central in presenting critiques about displacement and unfair immigration laws. By focusing on the translocal event, we will begin to see how the experiences of deportees and returnees push them to claim and critique nations on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border and offer a framework that challenges precarity and premature death.
This is a hybrid event with the option to attend in-person or online. Please note that due to COVID-19 restrictions, all guests and visitors must present their CLEAR Health Pass, CDC vaccination card OR proof of a negative COVID-19 test within the last 24 hours. Masks are required.
Please join us on Zoom for “Trivia, Music, and Memes” on Tuesday, 9/21 from 6:30-8:00PM.
We’ll be discussing contemporary topics relating to popular culture and politics. The Zoom link is https://rb.gy/xtay5f
