Our next Outstanding Senior is Victoria Rocha! Victoria’s most cherished experiences at UTEP revolved around her participation in the MiNER Laboratory. There, she honed her research and professional skillsets, which ultimately led to an award-winning track record at state conferences in sports medicine. While juggling a demanding schedule of academics and extracurricular activities – including service as vice-president of the Kinesiology Club – Victoria also became her mother’s primary caretaker. During this time, her passion for physical therapy blossomed, and she decided to dedicate her life to compassionate care for others. After graduating cm laude in December 2023, Victoria began working and volunteering in various physical therapy settings in preparation for a future application to the UTEP Doctor of Physical Therapy program.
Congratulations, Victoria! 🤙🏻

Our latest publication from the lab. Congratulations to all the students! 🎉
Happy Wednesday, CHS Miners! ⛏ Today, we’re celebrating good news from the MiNER Lab, directed by Dr. Sudip Bajpeyi, regarding an important publication available now in Frontiers in Endocrinology, entitled “Effects of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation on Glycemic Control: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.”
Former lab member and current IHS PhD program student Michael Sanchez is first author on the manuscript. The publication is based on his masters thesis project in Kinesiology and is an extension of work first begun by Kinesiology graduate and former MiNER Lab member Michelle Galvan. The writing and review team surmounted several obstacles, most notably the COVID-19 pandemic, to achieve their goal of publication.
Congratulations to Michael and the entire team, including Kinesiology MS graduates and former MiNER Lab members Michelle Galvan, Ali Mossayebi, and Solmaz Sigaroodi; current IHS PhD program student and MiNER Lab member Jehu Apaflo; and Drs. Kisuk Min, Amy Wagler, Frank Agullo, and Sudip Bajpeyi.

Metabolic, Nutrition and Exercise Laboratory (MiNER Lab)
Welcome to the Metabolic, Nutrition and Exercise Research (MiNER) Laboratory. Our laboratory focuses on translational research in understanding the underlying molecular mechanisms relevant to metabolic diseases such as obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Furthermore, we strive to understand the effects of diet and exercise training individuals with obesity and type 2 diabetes. Our research interest involves investigating these changes on insulin signaling, intramyocellular lipid (IMCL), lipid droplet associated proteins, and mitochondrial bioenergetics in humans and in skeletal muscle and using human primary skeletal muscle cell culture models.
