Broward Commissioners voted 8-1 in favor of building a proposed new Broward Government Center at a county owned property located at 201 W. Broward Blvd in Fort Lauderdale. The 4.4 acre site could accommodate a future 20-story building with parking and no interruption in county services. A consultant's report says the current Government Center (built in 1940) is functionally obsolete with outdated infrastructure that lacks storm resiliency and modern security. The cost of deferred maintenance of the current structure at 115 S. Andrews Avenue is estimated at $94-million. The preferred location is directly next to the Brightline station and would not interrupt county services.
A total of three county-owned properties were reviewed. Detailed information for agenda item #85 https://tinyurl.com/bdcvns55
Revenue opportunities of nearby county owned properties could offset the costs of the new Government Center on the West Broward site. Broward Commissioner Michael Udine was the dissenting vote.
