Celebrating Student Voice and Community Support!

Last year, during our discussions about wellness at school, James and several other students shared their vision to bring more supportive resources to our campus. One of the standout suggestions was haircuts—a simple idea with a profound impact.

A fresh haircut isn’t just about looking good; it’s about feeling confident and ready to take on the world. When students feel good about themselves, it directly affects their expectations and performance. A boost in self-esteem can translate into higher engagement, better focus in class, and a willingness to participate more actively in school life. A good haircut can be the catalyst for a student to walk into a classroom feeling seen, valued, and ready to succeed.

Today, that vision became a reality, thanks to the incredible partnership with A&M Barber School. They didn’t just show up—they showed up with excellence. With ring lights, remarkable skill, and most importantly, a whole lot of heart, they transformed our campus into a space of confidence and pride.

It was truly inspiring to hear kids say things like, “I want to be a barber when I grow up,” or simply, “I love my haircut!” Moments like these show the power of student voice and community collaboration. We are so grateful to A&M Barber School for believing in our students’ vision and helping us bring it to life in such a meaningful way.

Today, our Longhorns took an active role in democracy by voting for their Student Council representatives! 🗳️ It was amazing to see our students engage in this important process, learning about leadership, decision-making, and the power of their voices. Voting helps students understand key concepts such as citizenship, rights, and responsibilities.

Here are the TEKS connected to today’s learning experience:

• Kindergarten: Understanding authority figures and roles in a community.
• 1st Grade: Recognizing the role of good citizenship.
• 2nd Grade: Explaining the purpose of rules and laws.

Our 4th and 5th grade students are learning to become their own curators! Thanks to an interactive and creative program brought in by the Dallas Holocaust Museum, students had the opportunity to explore a historical topic by curating their own exhibition panel. This hands-on experience allows them to engage deeply with history, think critically, and express their creativity. We are proud of our young historians for their hard work and thoughtful insights!
