🚍 School Bus Driver Shortage 🚍

Like many school districts across the country, FCPS is facing a shortage of bus drivers. This shortage means that about twenty or more bus routes are being covered by a small number of substitute drivers, Transportation Office staff, or other drivers who are filling in. While we have managed to cover these routes, it has affected pickup and drop-off times for students.

Using substitutes and office staff can cause delays, in addition to usual factors like traffic. To keep you informed about any delays, our Transportation department updates a bus status board, which you can find at this LINK and on the “Transportation” page of our website, www.fcps.org. This board shows the most current information on bus times. If a bus route is canceled due to staff shortages, we will send notifications, and you can also check the status board for updates.

We are actively looking for more bus drivers. If you or someone you know is interested, please apply online at https://www.applitrack.com/fcps/OnlineApp/. Your help in spreading the word is greatly appreciated.

As we enter the new school year tomorrow, drivers should be alert for buses on the streets and students that are walking to school.

Here are some back to school safety tips for sharing the roads with school buses:

Never pass a bus from behind – or from either direction if you're on an undivided road – if it is stopped to load or unload children.

If the yellow or red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended, traffic MUST stop.

The area 10 feet around a school bus is the most dangerous for children; stop far enough back to allow them space to safely enter and exit the bus.

Be alert; children are often unpredictable, and they ignore hazards and take risks.

Our Department's School-Based Health Center at Hillcrest Elementary offers FREE vaccines to uninsured children up to age 17. We can also see 18-year-olds at our downtown location.

Free Chromebook Distribution TOMORROW at Bernard W. Brown Community Center from 3 PM to 6 PM! NO REGISTRATION NEEDED, just walk in!

One FREE Chromebook may go to each household/address in Frederick County, if the resident is 18 years old or older. To qualify, you must also participate in one of the following programs:
